Professor and Head in the Department of Sociology, University of Kerala. He has about twenty five years of teaching experience in PG Sociology He did his post graduation in Sociology from Delhi School of Economics and obtained PhD from the University of Kerala for a doctoral dissertation in the area of globalization and culture. He was a Visiting India Scholar in Cleveland State University, Ohio, USA and was consultant at the Department of Sociology, University of Peridenia, Sri Lanka. Since January 2003, he is the India Coordinator and Principal Investigator of the World Science Project that studies the impact of Internet on research communication in developing countries. He has conducted researches on the struggles and movements of the excluded people in Kerala, with special reference to the issues of land and water, supported by UGC and ICSSR. He has published eight books and more than 40 research articles and several popular articles in leading periodicals in Malayalam. His latest book “Introduction to Kerala Studies” - in two Volumes - is an encyclopaedic compendium on Kerala. He is the recipient of ICSSR Senior Fellowship in Sociology for a study on Land issues and Social Inclusion in Kerala in 2011. He received FLAIR Award of Excellence with 50,000/- rupees and a Certificate of Merit from the Department of Higher Education, Government of Kerala in 2015. He has also received Research Excellence Award from the World Science Project, Louisiana State University, Louisiana, USA for the best Country Coordinator of the Project in 2014. In June 2017 he received the Best Research Paper Award in the International Conference on Skills, Engineering and Technology, organized and conducted by ICT Academy, Govt. of Kerala. Palackal is former President of Kerala Sociological Society and Member, Managing Committee of Indian Sociological Society.Palackal’s academic movie on “Promised Land and the Broken Promises” was selected for the Ethnogrfilm Festival in Paris in April 2014. This movie is used as study material for the study and discourses on Developmental issues and New social movements in Kerala. He serves as a consultant and trainer to several NGOs and socio-political movements in Kerala. He offers classes, courses and seminars on topics of socio-cultural significance. His areas of specialisation include: Sociological Theories, Sociology of Science and Development, Social Movements, Cultural dynamics and Gender and Society.`

Can the internet improve the lot of women in the developing world? This study investigates the de... more Can the internet improve the lot of women in the developing world? This study investigates the degree to which the internet affects the constraints on women pursuing scientific careers. We address this question in the context of the scientific community of Kerala, India, developing a “circumvention” argument that fundamentally implicates information and communication technologies in shaping gender roles. We begin by reviewing two main constraints identified in prior research (educational and research localism) that increase the likelihood of restricted professional networks. Next, we examine the extent to which women scientists have gained access to e-science technologies. With evidence of increased access, we argue that the presence of connected computers in the home has increased consciousness of the importance of international contacts. We conclude by proposing that internet connectivity is helping women scientists to circumvent, but not yet undermine, the patrifocal social structure that reduces social capital and impedes career development.

Although anxiety and depression have been central topics for scholars and clinicians in the Unite... more Although anxiety and depression have been central topics for scholars and clinicians in the United States, few studies have examined their correlates in sub-Saharan Africa and none have examined large urban slums. Using face-to-face interviews in two African cities, we analyze self-reported symptoms of anxiety and depression in a community-based sample (n = 495). Ordinary least squares regression was used to analyze a variety of demographic and social predictors including sex, child-rearing, marital status, education, income, age, and neighborhood for residents of Agbogbloshie (Accra, Ghana) and Kangemi (Nairobi, Kenya). Controlling for other factors, two personal network dimensions were significant. Total network size is positively associated with symptoms of anxiety and depression in Kenya but not in Ghana. However, one factor was predictive of symptoms of anxiety and depression in both locations: the reported percentage of ties with older persons. Higher levels of anxiety and depression are associated with a larger share of older individuals in one's personal network.

Various strategies have been tried and tested for obtaining a sustainable result in municipal solid waste management. Nonetheless, in most of the cases, they have created negative health, environment and socio-economic impacts, particularly in developing countries. Furthermore, the attitude of the common people towards the waste they generate, often acts as a barrier for adopting sustainable strategies for its management. This conclusion is typically gaged through aggregated measures of gender differences in numerical presence in scientific fields (Fox and Colatrella 2006; Long and Fox 1995), publication productivity (Fox 2005; Long 1992; Long and Fox 1995; Miller et al. 2012) and professional rank (Benschop and Brouns 2003; Fox and Colatrella 2006; Long and Fox 1995).To better understand these differences, a small but growing body of literature examines men's and women's subjective experiences with and perceptions of the work and research climate (Cech and Blair-Loy 2010; Bronstein and Farnsworth 1998; Fox 2010; Fox and Mohapatra 2007; Smith-Doerr 2004; Todd et al. 2008). Epidemics have traditionally been viewed as the widespread occurrence of infectious disease withi... more Epidemics have traditionally been viewed as the widespread occurrence of infectious disease within a community, or a sudden increase above what is typical. But modern epidemics are both more and less than the diffusion of viral entities. We argue that epidemics are ‘fire objects’, using a term coined by Law and Singleton: They generate locative fears through encounters that focus attention on entities that are unknown or imprecisely known, transforming spaces and humans into indeterminate dangers, alternating appearance and absence. The Ebola epidemic of 2014 had more complex impacts than the number of infections would suggest. We employ multi-sited qualitative interviews to argue that locative fear is the essence of modern global epidemics. In the discussion we contrast Ebola with both the Zika epidemic that followed and the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The article seeks to look at the current organic boom in the state of Kerala as a counter-discour... more The article seeks to look at the current organic boom in the state of Kerala as a counter-discourse to the agrarian crisis and the impending issues of food security, food price and health hazards in the state in the wake of the liberalisation policies and World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements. The Polanyan notion of countermovement (1944) is used to unearth Kerala’s agrarian crisis of the 1990s that stemmed up from the commoditisation of agriculture, which ultimately paved way for an agrarian countermovement in the form of organic farming in the late 20th century. It is argued that organic agriculture signals the emergence of an agrarian counter-discourse promoting greater engagement of the farmers from the fringes. The primary data for the article were gathered out of two empirical projects carried out in 2015–2016.

This paper examines how institutional context has affected Kenyan agricultural scientists’ professional lives along several dimensions: Access and use of emerging ICT technologies, professional activities, and scholarly output. It draws upon a unique longitudinal data set in which scientists were interviewed in 2001, 2005, and 2010. The data allow us to follow changes in technology adoption, professional activities, and publications over this critical period of Internet expansion. We found diminishing institutional differences with ICT expansion.

This paper examines the impact of the Internet on the research careers of female scientists in three developing areas: Ghana, Kenya, and Kerala, India. Most empirical studies of gender and science focus on the developed world, yet theoretical accounts emphasize more extreme differences in developing areas. Limited evidence from Africa and Asia shows gender inequity is restricted to a few key dimensions, broadly related to differences in human and social capital. Specifically, women are less likely to acquire an advanced degree and more likely to experience educational and organizational "localism." Such localism is related to constraints on physical mobility that are widely expected to diminish with the introduction of the Internet. Methods. Using longitudinal data on 1147 scientists in Ghana, Kenya, and South India, we examine gender differences in human and social capital by conducting a series of t-tests and chisquare tests. Results. We show that higher education and Internet access increased dramatically, but localism has not been reduced significantly and may be increasing. Conclusions. This finding casts doubt on the presumption that the removal of communication constraints will soon reduce career differentials resulting from the mobility constraints on women professionals.
