Professor and Head in the Department of Sociology, University of Kerala. He has about twenty five years of teaching experience in PG Sociology He did his post graduation in Sociology from Delhi School of Economics and obtained PhD from the University of Kerala for a doctoral dissertation in the area of globalization and culture. He was a Visiting India Scholar in Cleveland State University, Ohio, USA and was consultant at the Department of Sociology, University of Peridenia, Sri Lanka. Since January 2003, he is the India Coordinator and Principal Investigator of the World Science Project that studies the impact of Internet on research communication in developing countries. He has conducted researches on the struggles and movements of the excluded people in Kerala, with special reference to the issues of land and water, supported by UGC and ICSSR. He has published eight books and more than 40 research articles and several popular articles in leading periodicals in Malayalam. His latest book “Introduction to Kerala Studies” - in two Volumes - is an encyclopaedic compendium on Kerala. He is the recipient of ICSSR Senior Fellowship in Sociology for a study on Land issues and Social Inclusion in Kerala in 2011. He received FLAIR Award of Excellence with 50,000/- rupees and a Certificate of Merit from the Department of Higher Education, Government of Kerala in 2015. He has also received Research Excellence Award from the World Science Project, Louisiana State University, Louisiana, USA for the best Country Coordinator of the Project in 2014. In June 2017 he received the Best Research Paper Award in the International Conference on Skills, Engineering and Technology, organized and conducted by ICT Academy, Govt. of Kerala. Palackal is former President of Kerala Sociological Society and Member, Managing Committee of Indian Sociological Society.Palackal’s academic movie on “Promised Land and the Broken Promises” was selected for the Ethnogrfilm Festival in Paris in April 2014. This movie is used as study material for the study and discourses on Developmental issues and New social movements in Kerala. He serves as a consultant and trainer to several NGOs and socio-political movements in Kerala. He offers classes, courses and seminars on topics of socio-cultural significance. His areas of specialisation include: Sociological Theories, Sociology of Science and Development, Social Movements, Cultural dynamics and Gender and Society.`
