WHAT IS KENKEN?
KENKEN is the puzzle phenomenon sweeping the world! Fun, fast, highly addictive, and even educational, KENKEN is a great way to have fun and exercise your brain at the same time!
Invented by noted Japanese math teacher, Tetsuya Miyamoto, KENKEN allows you to test your puzzle acumen by improving your math skills!
RULES OF THE GAME Like Sudoku, even though difficulty may vary from puzzle to puzzle, the rules for playing KENKEN are fairly simple: ~ For a 3X3 puzzle, fill in with the numbers 1-3. For a 4X4 puzzle, fill in with the numbers 1-4. For a 5X5 puzzle, fill in with the numbers 1-5... etc ~ Do not repeat a number in any row or column. ~ The numbers in each heavily outlined set of squares, called cages, must combine (in any order) to produce the target number in the top corner using the mathematical operation indicated.
*Cages with just one box should be filled in with the target number in the top corner. *A digit can be repeated within a cage as long as it is not in the same row or column.

For a 9X9 puzzle use the numbers 1-9. 3, A cage consists of the squares within the heavily outlined group of squares. Every cage has a target number in the top left corner. Every cage (other than a singleton cage) has an arithmetic operation indicated that should be used to produce the target number. 4, A number may be repeated within a cage as long as it is not being repeated within a row or column. 5, The order does not matter. If the target number is 3 and the operation is subtraction, 1 and 4 can be placed in any order. The 1 can be on top or on the bottom, on the right or on the left. 6, In the most difficult of puzzles, you will find a puzzle full of cages without any arithmetic operations. Therefore, you must figure out for yourself what arithmetic operation must be used in each cage. These are the trickiest of all puzzles. If you dare to try one, good luck! 7, For a singleton cage, the target number in the top left corner is the number that answers that square. 8, The dark lines outline a cage. The light/dotted lines separate squares within the same cage. 9, Figuring out the possible number combinations can be tricky, but it will help you to improve your arithmetic skills. You should try to do this on your own or you can use our handy KENKEN Calculator which can be found on kenken.com
How to Solve:
1, Every KENKEN puzzle is unique. The best way to start to solve a KENKEN puzzle is to look for combinations of numbers that must produce a certain result. For example, a 10+ cage with four squares in the same row must use the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4. Therefore, if the puzzle is a 5X5 puzzle, you know that the remaining square in the row must be a 5. 2, Yes, a puzzle can always be solved without random guesswork. However, there are some instances in which small samples of trial and error must be used to eliminate certain solutions. This is found mostly in larger puzzles. 3, Basic arithmetic skills are needed to solve a puzzle. Some puzzles will only use addition, some addition and subtraction, and some will use all four operations. The beauty of KENKEN is that you can pick whatever type of puzzle you like! 4, A puzzle will NEVER have more than one solution.
