The novel “Lord of the Flies” was written by William Golding prior to World War II. Ideally, the novel outlines a story of 12 boys who got stranded in uninhabited Island when their airplane crashed. This assignment focuses on symbolism that the author applies to reveal or bring out his message in the novel. The story involves several characters. The characters described on this assignment include Ralph (democratic and civilized leader), Jackson (dictatorial leader), Piggy (a vulnerable character), Simon (a saint and a Christ-like character), and Samneric (identical twins most referred to as ‘bigguns’). Typically, the thesis is divided into four main parts which include the introduction, literature review, analysis, and conclusion. Noticeably, the objective of this assignment is to describe the extent to which William Golding applies symbolism in the novel “Lord of the Flies”. Towards this end, the paper focuses on five inanimate objects or symbols that Golding uses to bring his message to the readers. The five main symbols discussed include the conch shell which a symbol of power and authority, the lord of the flies which is the most valuable symbol in the novel, and the beast which is a symbol for instinct of aggressiveness and violence among humankind. The two other symbols include the signal fire which signifies the call for ships to come to the rescue of the stranded boys, and Piggy glasses which symbolize human intellect and innovations due to the development of science. However, some themes come up while analyzing symbolism in this novel. These themes include loss of innocence, civilization versus violence, and pessimism. Nevertheless, symbolism is used in several instances but this assignment concentrates only on the five inanimate objects aforementioned.

There exist several philosophical traditions. Some examples of these philosophical traditions include Daoism and Confucianism. Daoism and Confucianism are both ancient Chinese styles of living (Mou, 2001). Primarily, Daoism or Taoism focuses on living in harmony and in peace while Confucianism believes in being a role model or an example for other people to emulate. Confucianism sets five examples of relationship which includes wife and husband, ruler and subject, father and son, friend and friend, and older and younger sibling (Zhang, 2016). One major distinction between Daoism and Confucianism is that Daoism does not specify what is right or wrong while Confucianism clearly stipulates what is proper and what is erroneous or not in order. Daoism mainly explains the relationship of people with nature while Confucianism explains the relationship of people with other people.

Goodwill Industries International is an American based Corporation that is registered as a non-profit making business. Helms explains that the mandate of Goodwill is to enable the quality of life of individuals, the dignity of people, and to improving the lives of families by allowing people to maximize their potential by acquiring skills training, education, and the power of work (11). Towards this end, the services that Goodwill offers to people included employment placement services, job training (on and off the job training), and other community-based programs that target individuals who have issues that are barring them from acquiring a job (Goodwill Industries International, Inc). Interestingly, at times Goodwill hires people who face employment challenges or who lack education and job experience. The source of funding for Goodwill International is retail stores which also are non-profit making businesses.

Religion is the belief and the worship of a supernatural being that possesses absolute authority particularly a personal God or gods. Today there are several religions in the world and whom sources are either faith or reason. Nonetheless, in this context, I focus on religion as a social aspect whose role is to bind and to interconnect the society. Every society upholds and protects its culture which includes customs, beliefs, values, hierarchies, religion, attitudes, and meanings (Chidester 751). Ideally, the American civil religion is of particular importance as it borrows much from the historical experiences of the people of United States. American civil religion comprises of symbols, a set of beliefs, and rituals that are a representation of nonsectarian nominal religious faith existing within America (Chidester 757). This religion has sacred symbols and shared values that propel cultural and social integration in the United States. America's civil religion dates back to the 19th century but recently in the 1960s, some scholars such Robert Bellah developed sociological journals to elaborate the American civil religion. The Second World War also known as the World War 2 was a war of nations that lasted for six years from 1939 to 1945.Primarily, World War 2 was a global war which was precipitated by disputes that began earlier between the world’s superpowers (Callery 22).Besides, a vast majority of world's nations participated in World War 2, and this led to the formation of two opposing camps or alliances. These two opposite sides were the Allies and the Axis respectively. Taylor notes that World War 2 is the biggest war in the world’s history and over 100 million people from more than 30 countries participated in the war (33). Markedly, some of the causes of World War 2 include Germany invasion of Poland, Germany invasion of Norway and Denmark, Axis attack on the Soviet Union, militarism, expansionism, racism, and anti-communism. The Second World War had devastating impacts which included the massive destruction of property, loss of lives, genocide, slave labor, the establishment of new economic policies in Europe, and advancement of warfare technology. A review of the Second War in Europe and Asia reveals that the war was inevitable or not inevitable in equal measure.
