It was nice living somewhere else, but in the end, I missed being
near my family too much to stay away.

- I'm now the teacher of a 6th grade and pretty much all of my students are sweet, but have difficulties with social interaction, emotional control and learning. (Otherwise they wouldn't need a special needs teacher as their class teacher, of course.) Which makes school always interesting - and infinitely exhausting sometimes. Also, one of my student's family belongs to an Eastern European part of the mafiya. - Yes, really. v-v"

- I'm having a bit of a rough time right now, because my dog died fairly recently. She was twelve years old (not young, but not ancient either, for a Beagle) and it happened very quickly and unexpectedly. She was fine most of the summer and then she started breathing heavily and the vet discovered that she had cancer of the lymphatic glands (a subform of leukemia). A week later, she couldn't breathe or swallow properly anymore and we had to put her down. :(

- Other than that, though, I'm doing fairly OK: I'm enjoying the late summer - early autumn weather and my home-grown tomatoes, beans and zucchini...

- ... which kind of alludes to my interests, which have changed a bit over the last two years: I've discovered my love for gardening! (I built a tomato-house, all by myself! - Yes, I'm very proud of that. ;P) I'm still reading fanfiction (I don't think I'll ever stop that), but am not fannishly involved anymore. I miss it a bit, but to be quite honest - towards the end, especially the Arashi fandom got far too big and far too busy for me and I started feeling pressured into keeping up with news and fandom-love, which resulted in me basically leaving the fandom for good. It was a nice time, but in the end, it got too much for me, and I'm not really interested in keeping up with a big, active fandom like that anytime soon.

- I'd still like to start writing again, though! Apparently being stressed out about exams is good for my posting schedule, considering it's not been a year since I did my last post. I could still do without the exam looming before me, though. T minus 27 days, folks! >.<"

A few days ago one of my students unleashed some kind of pandemonium on us, when he took offense to ...something (which was just the tip of the ice-berg, he'd been antsy and moody for more than a week) and completely exploded, attacking other students, throwing chairs, shoes, pencils, scissors, demolishing doors, bathrooms... you name it, he probably did it that day. There was a point during it all when I had to abandon trying to teach the other students and had to block the door, because he was outside and trying to throw building blocks at the other students.

And the other students? Well, obviously they were a little bit bored, with all of our energy focused on that student, so they started to literally bounce around the classroom.
And say the word "bounce" as they bounced.
And then they started bouncing in a circle.

So there I was, standing at the door, with the sound of building-blocks-mortar and enraged howls of a furious student at my back, watching my other students going "Bounce! - Bounce! - Bounce!" while bouncing around in a circle.

...Welcome to my life.

Speaking of ...well, not exactly my life? But more stuff I've been thinking about (to distract myself from my exam): I recently read this meta-discussion post on homophobia in slash fandom, which I found very interesting, especially the stuff in the comments. The post argues that at least some of us slash fans (it's geared towards hockey fandom, but I think it's easily appliable to every other fandom as well) tend to think of ourselves as gay allies, because we read slash fanfiction, which can somewhat blind us to our own privilege and occasionally homophobic assumptions.

The best example of that kind of thing I ever encountered was back in 2004 at a German yaoi (anime/manga) site, when one other fan wrote that she loved imagining/reading about two beautiful anime/manga boys getting it on, but thought the idea of two middle aged "real-life" gay guys being intimate (or even slow dancing together in public!) was "disgusting" - and there were other fans on that site who agreed with her, all the while proclaiming that they weren't homophobic.

This is a blindingly obvious example of homophobia in slash fandom, but I've seen other, much more subtle, examples in various fandoms ever since. The comments to that post mention the whole "Derek/Stiles" thing on Teen Wolf, and while I'm not in the fandom itself, I've seen the show (I like werewolves! They're cool!) and I've read some fics - and even I noticed that there was a surprising dearth of the one canonically gay character on the show in a lot of those fics, even though there's also canonical evidence that Stiles has asked this character questions about "gay stuff" before and would almost certainly do the same if he were to engage in a gay relationship.
Granted, Danny (the character) is woefully under-developed - but really, a character not being fleshed-out has never really stopped fans from including them. But in a lot of fanfiction, Danny keeps being absent, because... well, why? Is it because he's not white, as one person on the other post suggested? While that might be a contributing factor, I think it might also be because he doesn't fit any of the "supporting roles" in a Derek/Stiles story (best friend, confidante, ex-lover, parent...) and because he isn't "sexy" to slash fans, not like Derek, Stiles and even Isaac and Jackson are. (Which, now that I think about it, might actually be a pretty strong indicator of the whole non-white thing, because all of those written characters are white...) Omitting him doesn't tell us readers that an author is homophobic - but I do think that it might indicate that, perhaps, the author hasn't given all that much thought to the issue of homosexuality and its erasure throughout a lot of history.

And... well, as the original post said, fanfiction itself is not (and doesn't have to be) supportive of real-life homosexuality. There are some truly amazing fanfictions out there that are, there are also a lot of fanfiction authors and readers out there who are homosexual/queer/trans/etc themselves, or who are true allies; but a lot of fanfiction is basically either the m/m for straight girls variant of lesbian porn for straight men, or an equivalent to a harlequin romance novel. And honestly, normally I'm totally OK with that, because as long as fanfiction readers and authors own up to that fact, I don't think that fanfiction needs a validation beyond being written/read for the pleasure of those things.

But, sometimes... there's stuff that's kind of noticeable and stuff that I feel strongly about and, even though fanfiction is written for pleasure and it should stay that way, I wish some authors would think about the implications of stuff, be it homophobia or other issues.

Take BBC's Sherlock, for example. Sherlock is semi-canonically portrayed as asexual. (Word-of-actor and Sherlock's in-universe explanation of being "married to his work" / "not interested".) He and John have a very intense friendship, a friendship that reads very slashy - and which is actually a really good portrayal of what an asexual romantic love story would look like.

Yet 90% of Sherlock-slash completely ignores the whole asexual thing in favour of making Sherlock and John have lots and lots of sex.

And on the one hand I get it - hey, it's two near-canonically romantically linked good looking guys, and fanfiction is all about the love and the sex! And it's written for fun and for getting fantasies out there! ...But on the other hand, I can't help but feel that this is also a form of erasing asexuality, which as a sexual orientation already has problems with being erased/not taken seriously; and I really wish that more authors were conscious of that.
urn:lj:livejournal.com:atom1:kegom:49312
@attributes":
{"@attributes":
[{"@attributes":
rl"}},{"@attributes":
teaching
[Note: I'm currently working with children with developmental and severe learning disabilities around the age of 10.]

Scene one:

Student A comes into the class.
Me: Hey, Student A!
Student A: *raises her arms in a clear sign of wanting to be hugged*
Me: Awww *bending down and hugging A*
Student A: * hugs me around the head, smashing my face into her saliva-covered shirt*
Me: Ungf. >.<"
Student A: *starts drooling on my head in joy*

I... Which makes the whole event a far more formal affair than any graduation ceremony I've ever had.

Sadly, most of my family couldn't attend because they had to work, but my father was there and he invited me to dinner afterwards, which was nice. ^-^ Unfortunately, his camera didn't work properly, so there are no photos of me, apart from the official photo, which hopefully will be uploaded to the university's website sometime soon. Today, he's so good at this role that no one seems to realize that he's anything but a not-so-strong dominant wolf and he finds himself unable to break out of it, for fear of losing everything - until an old general steps into his life, who wants to change society as it's known...

Prompt: Undercover: forced to hurt your partner | Nino/Aiba, Jun/Ohno | R-NC-17 (probably) - no idea about anything happening in this installment yet, I just know I want Nino and Aiba to be the focus in the "forced to hurt your partner" prompt. (The prompt "Cuddling for warmth/Snowed in", for example, is going to be the story about how Aiba and Nino met, and "Headaches" is a domestic piece about Sho and Clint Eastwood... - BTW! I know, logically, that it was the right decision, that he was old and sick and in pain and that it wasn't going to get any better, but it still hurt a lot to make that decision. It's part of our duty (I've been reading Terry Pratchett's book "The Wee Free Men" again, and the concept of "duty" in that book, this idea of doing something because not doing it is not an option - or a bad option, at least - really stuck with me in the last weeks), but that doesn't make it any easier and I'm still sad about it all.

Mostly because of this, I haven't really had much energy to do anything in the last week. Again I've been playing dead when I'm not, which is something you really don't deserve, because you're all such lovely people and I honestly don't want to ignore you, even when I do!

It's just that life, or rather, university, has been a bitch (and please excuse my language, but there's no other word for it right now) in the last weeks (VERY short version: decision-making people at our university have been using some of us students as pawns in their fight with one professor, to the point that we've started thinking about taking legal action against them) and my mind has been completely occupied with that.

But sometimes, when life, or even just one aspect of life, is really frustrating and stupid and makes you want to tear out your hair, there's something else that shows you that all is not as bad as it seems and that really, there are things in the world that are just plain GOOD.

For me, this was the "KettenreAktion" (translation: Chain reAction) that happened yesterday:

In a peaceful protest against the German government's plans to continue using nuclear power despite the unclear future of the nuclear waste and the frankly FRIGHTENING state of some of the older nuclear plants, more than 120,000 people from all over Germany and from surrounding countries built a human chain between the nuclear power plants of Brunsbüttel and Krümmel.

The nuclear power plants Krümmel and Brunsbüttel are pretty much 120,000 km (that's about 75 miles) apart.

There were more than 120,000 people standing in this chain - that's one person for EVERY SINGLE METER of that chain. (Which I don't actually remember a lot from, because while there were comic stores around in the Eighties/Nineties in Germany, most of the stuff accessible to children was French comics or Donald Duck/Mickey Mouse comics, but I do remember her actually fighting as well as the guys in one of the comics I read.) But still, even in the series she was sassy, she was able to put up with a bunch of teenaged boys in turtle form, but well able to shut them up when she needed to, she referred to them as her journalistic break, but never betrayed her ethics and their confidence by giving away their secret, and she defied typical female stereotype enough to usually wear a yellow jumpsuite instead of distinctively feminine clothes. As a nine or ten year old girl, I wanted to be like her and hang out with the (oh so cool to me back then) Turtles and go on adventures with them.
...I also wanted her to marry (or at least get together with) Michelangelo and I remember spending quite some time imagining how she would decorate his sleeping place, but I blame that on my inherent domestic streak (I hate cleaning, but I love cooking and decorating the house and stuff) rather than on the series' portrayal. ^^"

2&3.)

Eliza and Angela - Gargoyles

Anyone else here remember Gargoyles? It was my favourite series EVER for around three years, or so. I just loved the characters and the story so much; and I especially loved the two main good girls, Eliza (who was there from the beginning) and Angela. I remember that I wanted to be Angela's best friend so badly. She was just cool! And she and her family could take me on flights through the air! (This was before my utter fear of heights really kicked in, of course.) And she also had a special status, because she was Goliath's daughter and the only girl in that family of guys, but that kind of 'special' never translated to 'needs to be coddled and protected and is there mainly as a love interest for all the other guys', thankfully.
...Of course, she was the love interest for the three younger guys in their clan - at least until she told all of them to stop being stupid and that she'd choose her own lover, in her own way and her own time. Still a teenager in the series, and already so awesome!
- Speaking of being a teenager, I just had a look at the broadcasting dates for Germany and the first episode aired on the day I turned thirteen (...I can't remember having watched that on my birthday, but I must have, because I remember watching the first episode after I'd seen it advertised as a new series) and I think one big thing that I loved about Angela was that she was a teenager who didn't always get along with her father. ;P According to my mother, when I was around thirteen there was a period of nearly a year when I was an unholy terror and fought with my father practically every day. ^^" I don't even remember all of the fighting anymore - my father thinks we both suppressed that period of time out of sheer trauma ;P - but I do remember that puberty-wise, thirteen was the hardest year; after that I actually didn't fight with my parents all that often anymore. Anyway, so that was definitely something that made me identify with Angela a lot, her being a teenager who fought with her father... and then talked about the things in her life with Eliza, which means that after the time Angela joined, the series totally would've passed the Bechdel test, because I can distinctly remember conversations between Angela and Eliza that were not about men.

Speaking of Eliza: She is one of the few TV series characters who I realized later on was actually much more awesome than I had thought at first. (Normally, it tends to be the other way around.)
Eliza is half Native American (Wikipedia says probably largely Hopi) and half Nigerian, with her father being a detective like Eliza, and her mother being an anthropologist specializing in African cultures. And - I am not completely sure about this anymore, because it's been pretty long since I've watched the series, but I think her ethnicity actually became a topic later on in the series? At least I remember there being episodes about her family and her mother being in Africa, or something. ...Oh, and Wikipedia (there's an article on Eliza here) says that I don't misremember, there actually were episodes that dealt with her family. ^-^ (Also Wikipedia says that her mother was voiced - voice-acted? - by Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura on the original Star Trek series! It's a small world, really.)
So yes, for once a female companion to some male heroes isn't white. She also isn't constantly in need of help, because Eliza is intelligent, tough and well able to care for herself. In fact, rather than her being the one who predominantely needs to be rescued by the hero, she's actually the one who helps Goliath and his clan adjust to the modern-day world and she's the one who keeps an eye on them when they turn to stone during the day time and are completely vulnerable to enemies.

I didn't identify with Eliza the way I did with Angela, but that was because I was a teenage girl and Angela was a teenage girl, while Eliza was a grown-up woman. I did love and admire her a whole lot and I thought that it would be just as great to be friends with Eliza as it would be to be friends with the Gargoyles. And I'm pretty sure that now as a grown-up, I'd identify with Eliza more than Angela, which makes me think that Eliza is a pretty great example of the fact that a heroine (or hero) does NOT have to look the same as the majority of the intended audience for them to be able to identify with her (or him), no matter what those producers might think.

Also, Eliza/Goliath is still my Gargoyles OTP. ;P

4&5.)

Captain Kathryn Janeway and B'Elanna Torres - Star Trek: Voyager

Even at the age of twelve, I knew that Captain Kathryn Janeway was how I wanted to be when I'm between 40 and 50: Compassionate but capable of making difficult decisions, mostly cool-headed and even when upset willing to listen to reason, a strong female leader who never has to resort to acting "like a man" to get her authority across, and dignified without being too distanced. Of course I realize now that I'm probably never going to be like her - I'm not the type to be dignified, for one ^^" - but the admiration for her still remains. She's the one who ultimately kept the Voyager together, who taught Seven Of Nine to be human, who integrated two different crews - from enemy ships, even! - into one strong, capable crew, she was the one who accepted the Doctor, a hologram program, as a sentient being, and she was the one who turned what had been a ship on a military hunting mission into a generation ship. Actually, one of the episodes that I remember best is the one where a crew member becomes pregnant and she has to think about reassigning quarters and making a ship that wasn't meant for families (unlike the Enterprise, the Voyager, which was considerably smaller than Enterprise and other generation ships, hadn't been thought to stay out in space for too long and thus the personel weren't supposed to bring their families with them) as child-friendly as possible. And her friendship (*cough* - as a slasher I see their relationship a little bit differently today... but that's half of the fun of being a slasher, isn't it? ;P) with Seven is really one of the most important emotional ties in the whole series; to the point that the otherwise so rational and level-headed Janeway completely loses it and starts getting NASTY when Seven is kidnapped by another human ship. I actually don't like her that much during that time (which means I basically ignore it, which is something that's pretty easily done in Voyager, because their timeline is tentative at best anyway), but I still think it's great that they decided to explore her darker side when her best female friend is threatened.
(This series definitely passes the Bechdel test, btw, even though there are actually only three to four important female characters in the mainly men dominated cast. But those women really have better things to do than talk about men all the time!)

B'Elanna Torres is pretty much the opposite of Kathryn Janeway: Quick-tempered, rash in her decisions, passionately opposed to the Starfleet at first and not the one to see the need for diplomacy, she sometimes isn't the easiest person to get along with. But she's also loyal, intelligent and an amazing Chief Engineer with more than enough knowledge to run the Voyager's technical systems, despite the fact that she hadn't encountered the very modern engines that the Voyager sported before. (Female engineers for the win, yay! Seriously, if you watch the other Star Trek series, it's really noticeable that not only the Chief Engineers are men, but that also a majority of the other engineers in the background are male, so a prominent female engineer is pretty amazing.)
I also remember that as a child/teenager, I really loved her for being the rebellious and out-spoken one and I was absolutely in love with her friendship with Harry Kim, the young ensign (another favourite character of mine in Voyager when I was young). It was so cute, because he was so gentle and she was much more dominant than he, so my impression was that a lot of their interactions basically consisted of her ordering him around, which I thought was hilarious. XD
And of course there's the infamous scene in which Chakotey mentions that she's the only person he ever knew who was introduced to her spirit animal and immediately tried to kill it... (Awesome, I tell you!)

Looking back, one of the things that I didn't really fully realize as a child, but which I really like about her character now is the on-going struggle she is shown to have with being bi-racial. Most of the bi-racial (bi-species...?) in Star Trek struggle with their heritage in some way, of course, but what I really like about Torres is that this is a struggle that actually continues throughout the whole series, from the first season to the very last. Over the course of the series, she really shows a lot of growth, and one of the ways in which her growth is shown is the way she eventually comes to terms with being who she is.

6.)

Jadzia Dax - Star Trek: Deep Space 9

Jadzia Dax is quite an interesting character - as one fanfiction author put it, she's "half woman, half slug", because the (female) humanoid Trill (= name of her race) harbours a (...sexless? bi-gendered? how do alien slugs procreate anyway?...) slug-like symbiont in her body. This symbiont's name is Dax, the humanoid female's name is Jadzia, together they make Jadzia Dax, one entity that basically negotiates two brains in one body.
The symbionts generally live a very long time (several hundred years) and, when their former hosts die, they take all of the memories and personality traits with them into their new host body.
So the one person (in appearance) Jadzia Dax is actually = female Trill Jadzia + symbiont Dax + six (or however many, I can't quite remember) other humanoid personalities that entered Jadzia's body together with Dax. Talk about multiple personality disorder... ^^"

(And, no, the whole Go'auld business in Stargate really wasn't as original as people might have thought... But then, neither was the whole "stranded on a station in a far-away galaxy without an idea how to get back" business in Atlantis. ^^" Of course I liked it precisely BECAUSE it was basically a mixture of Voyager and Deep Space Nine.)

What I remember finding interesting about this whole Trill/Symbiont business even as a teenager was that the symbiont Dax could decide whether it wanted to be put into a female or a male host; and while the host before Jadzia had been a man, Dax overall seems to have preferred female hosts. Even back then it made me think about what it would be like to freely choose a gender and what would make one gender preferable to the other.
Also, this was a little bit before I'd ever read "The Left Hand Of Darkness" (one of my absolute favourite books EVER, when I first read it when I was sixteen it changed my outlook on gender and sexuality forever), but I think the whole Dax business started a certain interest in fluid gender and sexuality in me - especially after the episode with Dax' old love. (Story: a female Trill comes onto the station who carries a symbiont that Dax, in one of his former hosts, was married to. The other symbiont also had another host at that time, but through Jadzia and the new other Trill host, they rekindled their relationship, even though it was forbidden, which lead to the first same-sex kiss on Star Trek EVER.) It was, for all appearances, a lesbian love story, except that in the former life it had been a heterosexual romance, except that it had actually been at least in part a love story between two symbionts, who don't even have genders like humanoids do (as far as I know), and who hadn't even really had contact with each other, so all in all it the thing was a homosexual, heterosexual, asexual, polyamorous relationship between four aliens.

...Now that's a complicated romantic relationship for you. I'm pretty sure it beats even a Bollywood romance in terms of complications. ;P

But apart from the whole interesting gender business, a reason I really love Jadzia Dax (and kind of hated Ezri Dax) is the way she always seems to know more than everyone around her - and is endlessly amused by the way people behave. My personal canon includes her being completely aware of the way Garak flirts with the oblivious Julian Bashir (GARAK AND BASHIR, my first slash pairing ever, because the actors were so completely unsubtle that even an innocent fifteen year old was able to realize they were flirting) and secretly approving of Garak's interest, but showing nothing but her slightly unsettling Sphinx-like smile when she sees them, which actually unsettles both Garak and Bashir, though for different reasons.

8.)

Jessica Fletcher - Murder, She Wrote

Jessica Fletcher, that awesome old lady with the mystery-solving abilities. I watched the subbed Hana Yori Dango Final Five City Jet Tour this morning and - oh, Jun. You pretty princess, you. &hearts
Seriously, on that first day, everyone else is dressed in pretty mute colours, even Mao is dressed in white and gray - and Jun is dressed in this purple shirt and scarf combination. And then on the second day, Jun wears a shirt with golden metal bits on it that hurts when he hugs others with it on and which sort of jingles when he moves, and it's so amazingly JUN that I just can't help loving it like crazy.
Seriously, this must be the shirt Jun has always dreamed of: It looks fabulous, it jingles, it glitters and it makes it possible for him to hug his friends and cause them pain AT THE SAME TIME. It's like a Do-S-fashionista dream come true, seriously. *___*

Also, Inoe Mao is one of the cutest girls on the planet. I mean, yeah, seeming nice is one of the things that I'm pretty sure people in Japan expect from a female idol, but she just looks and sounds so natural, like she really is that way. Also, despite being a girl and pretty small and slight, she really doesn't have the whole "oh, helpless little girly me, I'm gonna act extra cute and child-like and then guys will do stuff for me" thing going on that just grates on my nerves with a lot of Japanese female idols. She manages to be both incredibly cute and seem like she knows how to take care of herself - and really, take that, you annoying extra-fake-cute female idols. ;P

2.) OK, seriously, why hasn't anyone yet written an AU of sorts based on Apocalyptica's "Bittersweet"?

It's a video about two men (brothers? they always seem to be brothers to me in this video, but who knows) in love with the same woman, trying to contact her spirit after her death, and then there's a plot twist and there are those three maybe-sinister ...beings with long hair that hang from the ceiling like bats, or something, and really, there have to be Supernatural fics about that at least!

Why can't I find fic about this? :(

Also, speaking of "Bittersweet", I really can't decide what I love most about this performance of it:

<lj-embed id="39" />

- The fact that Ville Valo looks amazingly like Jack Sparrow with his beanie (and his smirk - don't forget the smirk)
- That he smokes during the performance (that takes some serious dedication ^^")
- That Perttu is still allergic to shirts (sometimes I like to imagine Eicca having to explain to his children that no, they can't go to school shirtless, even though uncle Perttu always works without his shirt on XD)
- That Lauri Ylönen is in the middle of his cute "bird's nest decorated with feathers for authenticity" hairstyle. XD I kind of love that hairstyle a lot, even if it's a bit ridiculous - with that style, Lauri always reminds me of one of those friendly troll dolls that I used to play with as a child. ^-^

You know, speaking of Ville Valo, I read that he's actually best friends with Bam Margera of "Jackass" fame (you know, the guy who always terrorizes his parents).(*) Apparently, the way the story goes is that Bam flew to Finland in 2000 and read an article about HIM on the plane. That evening, he caught the MTV charts on TV and one of HIM's singles were at the top. He watched the song, bought the album the next day, became an instant fan, bought the rest of HIM's discography and various other things from Ebay (with someone else's credit card, apparently, if the story is true) and then he went to a HIM concert, went to the guy guarding the backstage entry and introduced himself as "Hey, I'm Bam Margera from MTV" - which was technically true, since he was working with the Jackass crew for MTV at that time, but not in the way he made the guy assume, obviously - was admitted backstage, introduced himself to the band and became Ville's new best friend, or something, possibly by offering him booze and going on a drinking binge with him for the next two days, or something.

...I have to admit: I'd love to read fanfiction about those two. >.>" I've actually looked around on LJ and there's one community (YES I'VE LOST ALL SHAME - though really, Jackass; I doubt that Bam, at least, would be fazed by RPS), but all the writers there sound like twelve-year olds who got lost on their way to the Twilight fandom, so... :/

(*)And yes, I've watched Jackass the series and both Jackass movies - and I actually LIKED some of that stuff, even if a lot of the rest made me shudder or want to puke. ^^" But at least the guys in Jackass were professionals who humiliated themselves because they thought it was the most hilarious thing ever, unlike all of those reality-casting-show idiots who take any kind of humiliation just to see themselves on TV.

3.) Sherlock Holmes! I have to admit, I'm kind of scared to watch the new Sherlock Holmes movie, because I was a MAJOR fan of the books as a teenager / young adult, and I always loved that Holmes was a.) mostly asexual, and b.) working with his mind to solve stuff, instead of going all action-hero on people, even though he obviously could (and did, in a few cases) defend himself physically. The movie seems to include both a romance and a whole lot of "action hero" things going on for Sherlock Holmes, plus they made Holmes shorter than Watson (...I always thought of Holmes taller than Watson, even if Watson was older), so I'm kind of hesitant about watching it... but man, I think I'm going to forgive the book for all of the things that are not "correct" with it, simply for the fact that it MAKES PEOPLE WRITE HOLMES FIC! Also, I've seen so many posts now from various people, who say that they watched the movie and have now started reading the novels and like them, despite never having been interested before.

Seriously, I love the fact that this movie makes people enthusiastic about books that have always been such a big influence on me. It's like with the last Star Trek movie - yes, there were a lot of things that made fans of the original series weep (I STILL DON'T BUY THAT ONE ROMANCE EVEN IF THERE WERE SOME HINTS IN THE ORIGINAL, IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE FOR THIS GUY, JUST SO YOU KNOW HOLLYWOOD), but it's made good writers who hadn't been in the fandom before want to write fanfiction and it made them watch the original series, so really, yay for the new movies! \\o/

And really, let's not forget the fact that Jude Law totally wants into Robert Downey Junior's pants:

<lj-embed id="40" />

Watch from 02:26, if you're impatient. ^-^ How can you not get excited about a Watson who loves his Holmes so much?

Edit: Just took the color-personality test that someone else on my friendslist did, and it described me pretty well!

you are lavender
#E6E6FA

Your dominant hue is blue, making you a good friend who people love and trust. (Here, have their amazing "Nothing Else Matters" cover, if you don't know them.)

Also? They're HUGE dorks. I think that must be a prerequisite for being in any sort of band, really, but Apocalyptica are still special.

...And not really in the way that they want you to believe in the following video. XD

<lj-embed id="21" />

2.) Continuing with the "bands are DORKS" theme, the second video is by the band Fall Out Boy (yes, I like them - and one day I'm going to tell you about my theory that Pete Wentz and Nino would totally own the world if they ever decided to work together), who excell both in interesting commentary and weirdness - yes, both at the same time.

<lj-embed id="22" />

3.) The next video is the only fanvid in this list. I simply couldn't resist it - also, Éomer is going to make a man out of YOU, whether you want it or not. XD

<lj-embed id="23" />

4.) The following video isn't really "funny" per se, but much like an Arashi video, this video by Icelandic singer Páll Óskar never fails to make me smile.

Also, they should totally offer Páll an honorary membership in Johnny&Associates. (And given how proudly gay he is, he might actually appreciate that membership. ;P)

<lj-embed id="24" />

5.) Speaking of people with an honorary membership in J&A... I'm not sure Ken Hirai would actually appreciate a membership in Johnny's, given that the following song seems to be a bit of a parody, but - well, he at least likes Arashi, and also, if he was also an honorary member of Johnny's, he might meet Páll and they could fall in love. &hearts
(Shut up. I have no idea whether Ken is gay - though I've heard that there are persistent rumours that he is? - but those two have totally become my newest OTP, and I have no idea how that happened. I just want them to have this beautiful cross-continent and cross-culture romance, where they write each other cute love songs in languages that the other doesn't even understand.)

Anyway, "Pop Star" by Ken Hirai, and I bet at least half of the people watching it will end up copying the hand movements at some point. ;P

<lj-embed id="25" />

...And then, in our random little collection, there's Stephen Fry, of course.

I don't know whether I've mentioned this before, but I really love Stephen Fry (who is a British writer, actor - most famous for portraying Oscar Wilde - comedian and totally brilliant, if you don't know who he is -- also, "gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide", to quote the esteemed Pratchett and Gaiman). I started out with Blackadder, went to Jeeves&Wooster and stopped at QI, and I still marvel at how amazingly well-spoken this man is - so well-spoken, in fact, that he somehow manages to be the most genteel-sounding person on British television, despite the fact that he's also the person to most often use the word "fuck" on air. He's amazing, really.

6.) Anyway, the first video with him is from the TV series "Last Chance To See" (which started out with a book written by Douglas Adams, who, of course, was friends with Stephen - I swear, half of the best British comedians are former Footlights members, which is nearly as incestuous a group as Johnny&Associates), in which there is Stephen, Mark the zoologist and a rare (and horny) parrot. I think Stephen will agree with me that "Shagged by a rare parrot" will never get old. XD

<lj-embed id="26" />

The seventh to tenth video are from "QI", Stephen's quiz show, and they all have in common that they're not so much jokes by Stephen as they're jokes on Stephen.

...I swear, I mock with so much love for this brilliant man. It's just so funny to see him get taken advantage of when he least expects it. XD

7.) - Like in this video, which is one of my absolute favourites, because a.) it's such a rare occurence for someone to manage to get the better of the ever-so-eloquent Stephen Fry, b.) Stephen totally wailing in helpless laughter will never EVER stop being funny, and c.) It's totally clear that this wasn't planned and staged beforehand, which is something I love (which is, btw, one of the reasons I love Arashi so much - they also have this ability to get comedic potential out of stuff that wasn't planned), and they milk it for all that it's worth and it works SO WELL.

<lj-embed id="27" />

8.) Slightly similar, Alan's "Glascock" crack. I love how Stephen just completely walks into that one. XD

<lj-embed id="28" />

Interesting fact: One British newspaper claimed about QI that the vibe between Alan and Stephen was either sexual or parental. ...I'm not quite sure how they came to that conclusion, but to be completely honest? I'd feel a bit weird slashing Stephen, but if those two were ever in a movie/series together with slightly similar roles? I'd be slashing their characters SO HARD. They're just adorable together.

9.) Then there's the kissing stuff... Admittedly, not so much a joke on Stephen as one he participated in; but I still love his horrified "No!". Also: British comedians really believe in doing things thoroughly, don't they? XDD

<lj-embed id="29" />

10.) And, of course, Emma Thompson. &hearts I think I love Emma even more than I love Stephen. You know, I think she was together with Hugh Laurie (aka Dr. House) at some point? Who, of course, is Stephen's best friend for ever and ever and for life and everything (apparently, Stephen is godfather to all of Hugh's kids and the family still spends every Christmas at Stephen's house). Anyway, as I said above, I wouldn't write fanfiction about Stephen... but I'd totally read Real Person Fic about Emma, Hugh and Stephen being BFFs in Cambridge.

- Especially with the kinds of things happening that they talk about in this video. He's written a huge number of very diverse things - he wrote the script to the second "Aliens" movie, co-wrote the original novelization of "Star Wars" together with George Lucas, wrote the novelization of the newest Star Trek movie, plus a bunch of other novelizations... all of this in-between writing his own books that span from fantasy - Spellsinger is his most well-known fantasy work - to Science Fiction to horror.

His most well-known works are a series of loosely-connected books that all play in the "Humanx Commonwealth Universe"; a universe set in the future in which humans live peacefully together with other alien races - like the people in the Star Trek federation - and have formed a very strong alliance with one other race in particular: The Thranx, insectoid aliens that are nearly as big as humans, have pretty blue-ish green chitin exosceletons and smell very nice (to humans, anyway), usually a bit like flowers. (I - and others too, apparently? - always imagined them to look like giant praying mantises, though with prettier eyes.)

They also possess a rather dry sense of humor and a bunch of other qualities that, mentally and philosophically, make them perfect at balancing out humans - while the humans, in turn, have qualities that balance out the Thranx.

Actually, the two races balance each other out so well that, after some difficult beginnings, humans and Thranx took to each other like two halves of one soul, forming a strong economic and spiritual alliance, founding a common church (that's pretty neat in that it lets you believe in whatever you want) and developing a way to use their balance as a "weapon" of sorts against other races (mostly the AAnn, who're reptile-like and rather imperialistic), who try to attack them.

The "weapon" in question

Their "weapon" consists of small ships, manned with one human, one Thranx and one computer. Before a battle, both the Thranx and the human get drugs inserted into their systems, which a.) enhances the Thranx' natural quick judgement and logical thoughts, b.) lets out the human's natural killer instinct, and c.) binds both human and Thranx together in a mental bond, which practically makes them into one being with two souls, that, in the span of a few nano-seconds, battles out the right decision and timing with itself and then sends the decision to the "body"- the ship and its computer - to act the decision out. (Which leads to an incredible accuracy when it comes to attacks and is pretty much deadly to most attacking forces.)

I don't know what you think, but - two different beings who're practically soul-mates and who have the possibility to join together for a few moments until they practically become one being? To me that sounds rather... well, sexual, in a way.
And never mind that those two beings are not physically capable of having sex with each other.

This is where Bran Tse-Mallory and Truzenzuzex come in - the characters and their relationship

Truzenzuzex and Bran Tse-Mallory were two young soldiers who worked together on one of those small, deadly ships and who, I might add, therefore did all that "joining together mentally" thing-ie with each other. One day (Bran was just 25 years old at that point) those two disobeyed a direct command to save an unarmed colony from being violently conquered, and got thrown out of service. For ten years after that they went their own ways: Tru became a philosopher (a highly respected job in Thranx worlds) and Bran joined the church and became a scholar. And then, ten years later, they met each other again, found out that they had a common interest in old, extinct space-faring races and - just stayed together.

For the rest of their (very long, I might add) lives.

And during that life together they share they develop private jokes, bicker, play chess, go on long journeys together, take over some kind of god-fatherly (or grandfatherly) position to a young man, continuously call each other "brother" (perhaps from "ship-brother", which is how the soldiers call each other) and "friend", or by their first names (Bran, of course, and Tru, which is Truzenzuzex' personal name - the rest of his long name denotes what family and hives he comes from) and bicker some more.

Paraphrased into slashy terms what I mentioned under the cut means:

Two guys work together in an incredibly close environment and have a relationship that routinely involves the two of them joining together in a very special way until they don't quite know anymore where the one ends and the other begins.
After an unfortunate incident they go their separate ways.
Ten years later they meet again and, as if nothing had happened, start to do everything together again - and are perfectly happy with that.
And to the end of their lives, they don't separate again.

Tell me this isn't slashy in thought - even if one of them is a human and the other is an insect. ^^"
urn:lj:livejournal.com:atom1:kegom:43781
@attributes":
{"@attributes":
I'm really listless at the moment, having the greatest trouble getting myself to do stuff, instead of just lazing around and reading. *sigh* I'm sure it's just a phase, but - meh, not liking it. >.>"

But me whining about it is even less likeable (to me and to all of you, I'm sure), so - have some fandom-y stuff that made me smile today:

1.) In short? That girl has some serious talent for twisting the knife around in the wound.

Honestly, what exactly did she expect Kenta to think when she sent him that ticket?! The flashbacks show us that when they had their first concert on Valentine's Day, Kenta wanted to add "L-O-V-E" by Nat King Cole to their songlist. Obviously, from his bandmate's question and his subsequent behaviour, Kenta had wanted to add that song because of Akane, something which she just as obviously understood.
It is, basically, "their" special song.

And she sends him a ticket to their show, after she has kicked him out of the band, and she puts "L-O-V-E" onto the songlist.

I mean, how is Kenta supposed to interprete that? If he was a guy like Himuro (the crazy singing prince), he might believe in his own worth enough to get the message that was probably intended by the writers, which is that she still loves him and thinks of him and the times they shared, and the she wants him to know that by playing "their" song.
The problem is just that Kenta isn't like Himuro. He's a regular guy who lost a job offer, his band, his girlfriend, and is just finding his own place in a workplace where he's clearly the "newbie", the guy who's still getting chastized on a regular basis, partly to get him to work more, but partly also because there's still a lot of stuff he doesn't know so he makes mistakes.
None of these things in any way inspire self-confidence in a man, and from all we've seen of Kenta, he isn't really someone who's going to hope for the best regardless of what's happened to him. Which means that chances are, Kenta isn't going to interprete the gesture in the way Akane might have intended it to come across. Instead he's far more likely to interprete it as gloating; or, perhaps more favourably to her, a gesture of "look, this is the dream we once shared, the dream you weren't willing to fight for, but I was - and look at how far I've made it".

Way to go to show your ex-boyfriend just what he's missing out of because he was too lazy for you, Akane. :/

I can sort of see what the writers are intending with her character and the way she acts, and maybe it's a cultural difference thing that I don't get, but at the moment, Akane just comes off as supremely cruel. Not cruel because she left Kenta and decided to pursue her dream without him, but because she obviously doesn't ever take even one moment to think about how her actions might look to him.
She still cares for him, and she wants to show it to him - so she makes all these little gestures like coming to his studio or sending him that ticket, or even giving him these lectures; and she never even seems to think about the fact that perhaps Kenta is a normal human being who won't magically understand what she's trying to convey, but will see things from his side, the side of a guy who was dumped and thrown out of the band by her and who she very clearly told twice that they didn't have a common future and that he couldn't come back to her. For someone who knows only that about their break-up and her opinions of him, how do her gestures look like? Like she is still feeling affection for him and wants to connect with him?

I think not.

And then we see Kenta, who is selfish and runs away from things and doesn't always realize that the things he does are hurtful to others or make more work for them; but when people point these things out to him, he makes an EFFORT to try to change! He might do it grumbling and whining all along the way, but he tries and he takes stuff to heart and he's obviously starting to think about others before he thinks about himself (see the way he helped Michiru in that episode); and yes, he has people who point these things out to him and she hasn't so maybe she just needs someone to give her a lecture too, but honestly, Kenta's not the brightest bulb in the lightbox while Akane is portrayed as rather smart, so really, she SHOULD know this stuff; and basically, I really, really don't think that Akane deserves Kenta at the moment. >.<"

Also, you know, I have the feeling that the idea behind that particular drama plot is that the Giselle producer plans to put Kenta back into Giselle when he's "ready" (read: when someone else did the dirty work and made a hard-working, presentable, ambitious young man out of Kenta, like Manabe and the crew of that show are doing) and that he plans on having Akane as the bait that Kenta won't be able to resist and who will assure that Kenta won't feel any lingering resentment towards having been treated like that. (And undoubtly Akane, the way she's now, wouldn't be able to see beyond the fact that she and Kenta are happily reunited once more, and wouldn't even realize that they're treating Kenta even worse by taking him back...)

When that happens? I HOPE SO MUCH THAT IT WILL BE KENTA WHO REFUSES THEM! If this scenario happens, I really want Kenta to consider the offer and then decide to stay with his silly children's show, because he's made friends and his own place in the world there; and I want Akane to accept his decision and cheer (or at least smile) for him from the sidelines, not as his girlfriend, but as someone who cared (and still cares) for Kenta and who acknowledges that he has done what was best for HIM, even if it might hurt her at that moment.

With a scenario like that, the drama would come full circle, so I could theoretically imagine this to take place... but if it doesn't? I'm totally writing this myself and I'm going to refuse to believe in anything but my own AU!

Also, talking about scenarios I'd write...

I really, really loved the Kenta-Michiru interaction in this episode! &hearts

I mean, yeah, she wasn't exactly nice in this episode, but then - as Kenta pointed out - she is still a child, and an unhappy child at that; and it's all good and well to expect her to act like a professional, but sometimes a bit of leniency and adult help are going to be needed for that, and I really love the way Kenta helped her. *____*

At the moment they behave a lot like siblings, but in ten years time? I could actually see these two getting together. Not because I'm that desperate to put Kenta together with someone, but because they honestly seem to respect each other and believe that the other can overcome his/her problems (like Michiru believing that Kenta could do something to change the show and Kenta not taking her being rather bitchy at him personally).

So yes - I think I could write Kenta/Michiru in the future. XD Preferably the day she (by then a totally popular young actress) gets fed up with waiting and hinting and decides to confess to him - with the help of the whole female crew of "minna uta" (who he isn't working for anymore, probably, but who still hang around to make his life more difficult just for the fun of it). ;P

Speaking of the female crew: I'm seriously contemplating to write a fanfic about Manabe, make-up lady and newbie girl having regular "girls' nights" where they sit around, watch movies, drink wine, eat chocolate and snacks and alternatively make lewd comments about the male actors on screen and make fun of all the useless men in their lives (and possibly talk about such topics as who of their new uta no oniisan guys might be "bigger" or how bad their director's luck with girls is...) and then, somehow, pick Urara up from the street, where she was wandering around aimlessly and unhappily after having seen a show by her old company, and make her part of their group. XD (And it ends with Urara being completely drunk and declaring that in the future, she'll only wear trousers on the show and will sing nothing except feminist hymns. XDD)

Random thought that just occured to me: I think the movie the girls in this fanfic would watch would be Hanadan. Or something with Matsujun, at least. ^__________^

Speaking of whom (only, not really): One thing I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE about this show is the many cracks it takes at its actors. XD Like when Manabe told Kenta and Mamoru what they couldn't do (btw, did anyone else notice that the "things that are prohibited for a singing brother" included both men and women? This amuses me more than it probably should) and Kenta answered with "we're not even idols". XDDD

Uhm, looking at what I've written so far, I see that the Akane-rant part got longer than the "good stuff" part, which actually doesn't have so much to do with me not being satisfied with the show and more with the fact that there are so many parts I really liked (like Kenta getting mauled by children - this will never get old) that it would take too long to write them all down here. ^^" One day I'm going to make a whole post only about the good parts of the show and I'm going to include caps of all the times Kenta got
- mauled by children and made grumpy faces about it
- put into place by Manabe and made grumpy faces about it
- teased by his sister and made grumpy faces about it
- didn't want to do stuff and made grumpy faces about it
- made grumpy faces XD
urn:lj:livejournal.com:atom1:kegom:41559
@attributes":
{"@attributes":
{"@attributes":
fic
OK, so I just sent off my Ohmiya-a-day Valentine's Day Fic Contest fic. Unbeta-ed (well, self-beta-ed), because I just completely lacked time. :(
Partly this is because I had other stuff (mostly university related) to do, partly because I ended up crafting something and procrastinating as always when I have a deadline (REALLY bad habit of mine that I've been battling with for the last five years, at least), and partly it's because... *points above* yeah. I, again ended up with a fic that was twice as long as I'd expected it to be. v-v"

That's why I write so little! Because it always gets far longer than I wanted it to be - well, that and I'm just a really slow writer, of course. The only weird thing is that I seem unable to write chaptered stories... (Though the fic I planned for fivesome-a-day, which wasn't finished in time? I'm honestly wondering whether to make a chaptered fic out of that one, because I've already planned at least seven scenes that are each at least 1000 words long, so it could totally work as a chaptered fic.)

Anyway, so I sent off my Ohmiya-a-day fic and now I'm terribly nervous that I've made some huge grammar or spelling mistakes in there that I won't be able to correct, or that I over-looked some kind of logical/time-linear flaw, or something. Which is stupid, but I'm nervous anyway. :(((

Anyway, I think I'll go watch Uta no Oniisan now. And maybe do a post on it afterwards. ^-^"}]}
