George K.T. Oduro holds a PhD (CANTAB) degree from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. He is a Professor of Educational Leadership and the immediate past Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. He has expertise in leadership and governance, particularly in educational institutions. George has been a training facilitator in a number of leadership and governance capacity strengthening workshops nationally and internationally. He researchinterest in leadership and governance strategies for improving the quality of teaching and learning in educational institutions. He is experienced in coordinating education-related international partnership research and capacity strengthening. George is a strong advocate for de-politicization of University Governance in Ghana, the protection of Academic Freedom in sub-Saharan African Universities, Gender-sensitive pedagogy and Quality-index Fee-Free pre-tertiary education in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is a Fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, the All Saints’ Educational Trust, UK, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Galilee International Management Institute and the institute of Directors-Ghana (IoD-Ghana).

Teacher performance appraisal has been identified as an effective instrument for promoting teacher performance quality)'. This article looks at the teacher appraisal scheme of Britain and argues for its introduction in the Ghanaian school system. It argues that the strategy for assessing and supervising teacher performance in Ghana is inadequate. /r does not promote professional development among researchers. It rather instills unnecessary fear in them and eventual/y suppresses the spirit of iniriariveness needed for the advancement! Of their; Professional practice.

Government policy documents are a valuable source of determining the philosophy and indicators of quality priority areas in Ghana.. Library search for books, chapters in books, Journal articles and conference/workshop papers on quality education related issues. Indigenous literature on quality education is limited. The Journal of Educational Management (JEM), the Makarere Journal for Higher Education and …… were therefore the main sources of information. Few international Journals were also consulted.. Research findings of education-related Non-Governmental Associations and Research Centres [Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), Centre for Research into the Quality of Primary Education in Ghana (CRIQPEG), Quality Improvement in Primary Schools (QUIPS) etc]. Media commentaries and releases as well as informal discussions with individuals associated with school effectiveness and improvement policies in Ghana.

Despite tremendous success in improving access and enrolment of pupils in the Ghanaian basic educ... more Despite tremendous success in improving access and enrolment of pupils in the Ghanaian basic education system in recent times, learning outcomes still remain below expected levels. Through a systematic review international programmes and research on activity based learning (ABL), this article highlights exemplary practices which could help improve the quality of teaching, raise student learning and close achievement gaps for Ghanaian pupils. The article finds that Ghana has been the testing ground for many initiatives aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning. However, owing to the litany of problems associated with these initiatives, the article contends forcefully that Ghana now needs to focus on drawing lessons from international best practices on ABL pedagogies to adopt to uncover what is working and not working to set the foundation for developing a new national approach to ABL, which should have the potential to transform the education landscape in Ghana. This paper outlines the methods and key findings of a small-scale research project that aimed to ... more This paper outlines the methods and key findings of a small-scale research project that aimed to investigate the lived realities and practical implications of what has come to be known as 'distributed leadership'. The project took the form of case studies involving eleven schools (4 secondary, 2 middle and 3 primary, 2 junior/infant) within three Eastern Region local authorities (Essex, Suffolk and Hertfordshire). The schools, which were located in urban and rural settings, were purposively chosen, based on recommendations from their local authorities, as schools which exemplified distributed leadership and/or were interested in becoming more distributive in their practice. The methodology included quantitative and qualitative data collection, comprising questionnaires, shadowing procedures, interviews and workshops.
