If art, arguably, has the power to arise feelings of pathos, energy, ecstasy, sensuality and even... more If art, arguably, has the power to arise feelings of pathos, energy, ecstasy, sensuality and even sexual desire, then the so-called nude form that we find in art must carry some peculiarly unique power and vitality that parallels emotions equal or similar to things that we most value in real life, memories of all the things we wish to do with ourselves as Kenneth Clark says, that is the need to perpetuate ourselves or, simply, our instinctive quest for physical beauty . A great many assumptions underlie this statement which will form the basis of the subsequent discussion regarding the aesthetic value of the nude in art, the unique aesthetic experience that it entails and most importantly, the problematic over a number of moral, social or political questions that it raises, comparisons and distinctions which must be drawn, in order to justify its significance in art but, also, in our culture and everyday life.
Grave’s poem "The naked and the nude" and Kenneth Clark’s treatment of the two terms in his monumental work "The nude" give, with an utmost economy and simplicity, the theoretical, moral and intellectual framework for the study of such a broad topic as that of the nude in art. In what follows, I will attempt to develop my thesis in two main thematic entities which overlap sometimes. Firstly, I will try to develop a brief history of the nude as an art form and its aesthetic value, with special reference to the Greek antecedent and the subsequent reception, exploitation and transformation of the inherited Greek image in later European traditions in the Medieval Ages, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment up to the 19th century. Goya’s “Nude Maja” will have the final say in the discussion, being a landmark of Modernism. In the meantime, I will try to explain and analyse the key role in the changing depictions of the image of the nude over its long history with paradigms from different periods and art movements.

During the same century, the reformation of capitalism meant the spring of socialism, the immigration, the formation of new nations and national identities and, more importantly, the formation of an all-powerful middle class, due to the expansive phenomenon of urbanization. The advantages of this will mean the development of Parliamentarianism in the larger part of Europe, the redefinition of human liberties and rights, the free market, the decline of religion and the rise of science and technology. At the same time, the European nations and the countries of the New World will engage in a bitter competition and rivalry in spreading their influence around the world, by taking advantage of their scientific and technological advances. At the same time, the disadvantages will be many. The new unbalances in the political and social field will not keep pace with the ongoing changes and not everybody will benefit from capitalism. As a result, social injustice, poverty, prostitution and social struggle will become the main sources of an artistic and intellectual movement in Europe with no antecedent.

The text aims to highlight and exude child painting through the teamwork of the students of the Gymnasium of Kokkinotrimithia whose work received distinction. At the same time, I am given the opportunity to refer to a great chapter of Art, the starting point of which was only the belief that there is a rich thematic material in the children’s work for this purpose. I found it difficult to grasp my subject at once but I think the excellent work of the pupils with their wonderful collage reproductions, the persuasiveness and dexterity with which they used the material and creatively reproduced artworks by leading painters such as those of Manet, Toulouse - Lautrec and Chagall, need more than a simple reference, let alone a travel through time and space, as the title of the competition has it, on art trails, in order to recall in our memory the work of these three great artists, the music and dance as inspiration, and the diffused childhood embraced by all of them.

Γι’ αυτό τον σκοπό, θα προβάλω τις φιλοσοφικές ιδέες του κειμένου και θα επεκτείνω τα επιχειρήματά μου σε μια περισσότερο φιλοσοφική συζήτηση.
