Let's start with what was posted on Tumblr. (Note: Anything stated by DashCon is in blue.)

Q:Why did you say you were partnered with Random Acts, when it was obvious that you weren’t? And why is it still on your blog as of this post?

A: We did intend to implement fundraising for Random Acts, but we hadn’t gotten the donation receptacles placed prior to things going pear shaped on Friday evening. In light of those events, we felt it was questionable whether they would even want us to continue with our original plan and, thus, we didn’t. I’ve since spoken to our Random Acts contact, and it seems we made the right decision. I’ve made an attempt to remove all Random Acts references from our blog. If you could point out what I missed, I’d like to remove that as well.[1]

that does not explain why they claimed to be "partnered" with Random Acts. "Fundraising" is not the same as "partnering".DashCon claimed in June:

DashCon is happy to announce we’ve partnered with Random Acts... [2]

Random Acts, however, stated:

We did not have any formal partnership in place with DashCon. One of DashCon’s administrators completed a Volunteer Fundraiser form and was approved to run a fundraiser benefiting Random Acts at DashCon. [...] As of now, we do not know if funds were collected prior to that time. Subsequent emails to the individual asking that both the misleading language be removed and that we be given an accounting of any funds collected with a date when they will be transferred have gone unanswered. [3]

This differs from a partnership in that we do not offer any support to the program and the Fundraiser accepts all responsibility in maintaining the integrity of the event. [4]

Moving on to the committee head who wrote a series of I-know-the-real-story posts:

Q: Why are you letting a former admin and volunteer badmouth WTNV and spread lies about one of the other guests? Don’t use the excuse that they’re not a staff member. They were a former admin, helped out at the convention, and ran several panels. The comments are only serving to make DashCon look even worse.

A:I have very little control over what others say and do. She was going off of the information that we knew and had made available when the convention ended. Since the press release, she has since rescinded her statements.[1]

The person in question made one short statement then acted as if nothing malicious had been said. As far as I know there was no disciplinary action.

Q: I don’t think giving a refund calls your rules and policies into question. You know what does? Changing them halfway through the convention so you don’t have to refund anyone’s money.

A: Acting in opposition to one of our rules, as I’ve been told, does actually call all of our rules into question. The fact that someone changed rule 21 during the event has no bearing on the fact that rule 25 states: “The Schedule is subject to change at any time, even during the convention.” Everyone who bought a badge agreed to these rules, including the fact that the schedule could indeed change at any time. Sadly, that’s exactly what happened. That’s all there is to it. Additional questions about this policy would have to be addressed to our legal counsel, as this stance was formed around his expertise in the matter.[1]

Considering the questions regarding the enforceability of EULAs and ToS, I have my doubts about how well "reserves the right to change these rules at any time" without offering a refund would hold up in court, but I'm not a lawyer. Still, this is a crappy thing to do, considering con-goers paid "$10 for the Live Reading, and $15 for the Live Reading and the Q and A" for reserved seating on top of the $20 to $40 daily passes or $65 weekend pass. Furthermore, in the Q&A it was reported that DashCon:

The admins fully intend to refund both the 17k donations, starting with the largest donations and working down and the reserved Night Vale seating (about $15 per person), it has not been stated where the refund money will come from, other than the unused funds for Night Vale and the implication that they are currently holding funds intended for the hotel that were unavailable Friday night [5]

Already they've gone back on their word. Claims for refunded donations, meanwhile, must be made within TWO DAYS of the official post. i.e. "If you donated cash and would like it returned, please also let us know by 11:59pm EST on Saturday, July 19, 2014." That's not much time.

What about the hotel problems and the claims the Renaissance were demanding meanies who hated the attendees?

it was suggested that the Renaissance Schaumburg had denigrated our attendees, saying that they didn’t like the ‘type of clientele’ our event brought in. That has since been proven 100% untrue. When two of the Con Heads were told by the third that such a thing had been said or otherwise insinuated, it wasn’t wholly unbelievable—as it’s happened to so many other events in the past—and, in our state of panic, we believed what we were told, therein passing it along to our attendees. DashCon’s sincerest apologies go out to everyone who was hurt by this statement... [2]

As a reminder, this was the official plea for help on DashCon's Tumblr.

The upper management of the hotel is threatening to shut down dashcon, unless we give them $17,000 by 10 p.m. Central Time tonight. Please go to DashCon.org and click the Donate button and give her anything you can. Unless we get this by tonight everything is cancelled. We suspect it’s due to the fact that upper management doesn’t like the people at the con. [1](cached)

Panic, tears and hysteria followed in the ballroom:

...there is just utter fucking hysteria and panic going on. This was perceived as insulting by the con-goers [...] People were under the impression that they would be kicked out of their rooms, and there was quite a bit of crying and calling parents to be picked up. [...] and the mob psychology in this room was running really fucking strong.[6]

~~~~~~~~~~
they have been told they will be kicked out of the con and their rooms if we do not raise this money, emotions got high. Methinks someone took creative liberties with their experience and qualifications.
Regarding NightVale, DashCon stated on June 30 that Night Vale agreed to accept payment "upon arrival at the event". On Friday July 11th, however:
After the Meet & Greet, I [Megan Eli] sat down with all three of them to discuss how the Live Reading would go the next day. Prior to sitting down with them, I placed a call to Roxanne Schwieterman, who was in possession of their aforementioned check. She was unavailable to answer at the time, and we waited for her to return my call while speaking about the next day’s event. After a brief—maybe ten minutes—discussion, she had yet to return my call. When I offered to call her again or try to track her down, they casually offered pick up the check the following day. [2]
Note that already DashCon was technically in violation of their agreement. By Friday night, Cranor was informed of the hotel problems, and he replied at 9:57pm, right around the time con-goers were being assembled in the ballroom -- expressing his concerns and requesting their money before their panel. Too busy asking for donations to "save the con", Megan Eli didn't see it until the next morning.
To the best of our knowledge, this email was only seen by one member of DashCon’s staff, who replied to it at 9:17am CST on Saturday, July 12, 2014. Mr. Cranor’s email, as well as our response, wasn’t found by Cain Hopkins and myself until late into the evening on July 15, 2014. We’ve since identified the staff member who sent the reply and taken measures to remove them from the company. We at DashCon consider this response abrupt, just shy of rude, and completely unprofessional. Those of us who remain with DashCon pride ourselves on keeping communication, regardless of the recipient, as professional as possible.[...] And, for the record, none of the funds offered to Mr. Cranor were taken upon his departure.[2]
Jeffery Cranor replied right away, and there was a lot of talking apparently. Keep in mind this is a good two hours before their noon panel. How truthful is their explanation, I wonder. Previously, Megan stated "Roxanne Schwieterman, [...] was in possession of their aforementioned check". In the YouTube video Roxanne mentioned they'd have to run to the bank, so there was a bank open. If there was a check, that implies the account had sufficient funds -- unless they were counting on Night Vale not cashing it right away -- and they could dash to the bank, get a cashier's check and be back by noon. And let me stress again that Night Vale did not violate their agreement as they were promised a check upon arrival. I don't know if the form of payment was ever mentioned before or in their contract, but the only thing the emails show is they stipulated payment come in the form of cash or a cashier check which is guaranteed not to bounce.
That account is full of half-truthes and leaves a lot of things they did out, but on the plus side they publicized private emails without asking us. ~ Joseph Fink [8] (original source)
Megan Eli herself, in fact, was responsible for spreading false information.
Among the last panels today was 'A Fond Farwell,' an opportunity to basically have a Q&A with the Dashcon Admins. I normally dislike picking on grammar, but in this case I think it's justified. Review the post taking note of the use of passive voice -- "We are deeply sorry. Mistakes were made. Action will be taken." The only time the writer, Megan, takes any personal responsibility is when it has a positive spin. When an email was missed, it was someone else's fault for not informing her rather than her fault for not checking up on an important guest. It was an admin's fault for not calling back but not Megan's when she couldn't make a call because of "phone reception was shoddy all weekend long". When minors were allowed to head or co-head committees, it wasn't Megan's fault because "Committees were already in place when I arrived [...] and I was still willing to try and clean it up." The people who were "responsible for allowing minors into positions of power" were dismissed, but for some reason many of them remained in those positions despite her working "triple time". Ultimately, she's the owner, the eldest, and supposedly the most experienced in whatever she thinks qualified her. She appears to be the first to take credit for the good things, but the last to take responsibility for the bad, and that doesn't sit right with me.
@Gingerhazing
good on dashcon for releasing that statement and clearing the names of the guests they badmouthed - 10:58 AM - 17 Jul 2014
@Gingerhazing
- but everything seems to come down to "that wasn't US, that was another staffer and I never saw that until later" and like 10:58 AM - 17 Jul 2014
@Gingerhazing
that's IT, that's the issue. To make matters worse, a committee head spread rumors and created a series of false stories documented here. Most attendees -- with perhaps the exception of Night Vale fans -- had a good time, making the best of the panels and enjoying the company of like minded fans, but exhibitors and artists seemed to have experienced more troubles. This is a breach of contract, and therefore dashcon owes EVERY ARTIST AND DEALER full refunds for the tables the paid for($150 per table). Trying to confront the convention organizers about this proved frustrating. When Roxanne finally did meet with a group of artists, including myself, she refused to believe me when I explained the doors were unlocked and unguarded. As a group, we asked that we each be refunded fully for our tables since dashcon did not uphold their end of the contract. She asked for 30 minutes to make a decision. We were there for at least an hour before she showed up and spoke with us for maybe five minutes. We weren’t getting anywhere in the conversation, so we just asked for our money back and for us to be released from our contracts as we did not want to be associated with DashCon as vendors any longer. So we, us including other artists and vendors, decided to go to the con admins and ask for our money back. If things went as we hoped we would have taken our refund and kindly left the convention with no ill will. But instead we were ignored for and hour and a half. Though I've known some smart teenagers, chances are a group of 18 to 20 year olds are going to have limited to no experience when it comes to this kind of thing. Perhaps if they'd planned small they might have pulled it off.
I see this a lot in writing circles where someone wants to start their own publishing business. They think “ business experience” or “ degree in hospitality management” is proof of their competency, yet they lack the detailed knowledge and experience of the actual industry. But in the end, the majority fail and take many a writer down with them.
Years back there were a string of failed fandom and anime conventions -- and one outright scam-- by people who saw the attention organizers received and craved their own little slice of praise and fame. Imagine rubbing elbows with some of the big Names in the fandom! Case in point: anthropology.
According to Vicki Lynn, senior vice president of Universum, a global talent recruiting company that works with many Fortune 500 companies, bachelors degrees in anthropology and area studies are useless for finding a job.[…]
This goes back to my argument in my previous post that Anthropology has a huge PR problem. It is also reminiscent of the time Gov. Rick Scott of Florida tried to eradicate anthropology from his state because of its inherent uselessness. […] In my previous blog post, I concluded that anthropology's problem is at least two-fold: how we engage with each other and how we present ourselves to the rest of the world. Clearly we are failing at the latter. […] It is easy to dismiss assessments like this of anthropology as "ignorant"; however, we are responsible for the level of public ignorance about anthropology and its usefulness in the world. [1]
Thus a field where students are supposed to develop “analytical reading and critical thinking skills” and “how to deal with unfamiliar social situations” is failing miserably at getting across what they can do. Even in other countries it suffers an image problem. In Thailand, for example, it’s popular among upper class females but considered something of a throwaway degree, and the "smart" people get STEM degrees.
But there’s another possible problem, in my opinion. The above article quotes how anthropology is useful to many fields such as medicine, business and teaching. However, how many people decide they need an anthropologist over an economist, or over a physician? Are students not being properly prepared or, worse, deceived?
Though I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science, I took many extra liberal arts classes because I enjoyed them. In fact, I believe my anthropology, literature and language classes helped develop my critical thinking and communication skills in ways the hard sciences don't. It may be my ego speaking, but looking back on some of my predictions and analysis of social situations I've been in, I think I called them pretty well and believe those classes played a role. In other words, STEM + liberal arts are a useful combination. That's why most colleges push for students to take classes in both, but it's usually the absolute bare minimum, and the liberal arts kids trudge through the STEM classes, promptly forgetting these "unnecessary" classes once the semester is over, and vice versa.
Let me stress show much I enjoyed my Anthro classes. The teacher was fun, the discussions engaging, and the idea of a career in anthropology was intriguing. But what do you think of as careers options when one says "anthropology degree"? If you're like me, what first comes to mind are teaching and museum work. Some probably even picture exciting trips to far off locations working with indigenous people or uncovering artifacts; in fact this is the image I found pushed most by the university. Rarely did I hear about work with an economist or doctor in an office or hospital setting. It wasn’t nearly as exciting sounding and doesn’t cost thousands of dollars of the student’s money to study abroad.
Yet his suggestion that the field is not preparing its graduates for jobs is not so far off the mark. For all that the discipline has done to defend the many jobs that anthropology graduates are prepared for, beyond the academy few of these jobs require a background in anthropology as much as they require generic skills in critical thinking, writing and social science methodologies -- skills obtained from any number of liberal arts degrees. And when it comes to advanced degrees in anthropology, a strong argument can be made that the degree is one of the most cost-ineffective degrees out there. According to the National Science Foundation, a Ph.D. in anthropology takes more time than any other degree to achieve -- with a median age at graduation of 36. Yet the number of jobs for those graduates is among the lowest[2]
As for the costs:
Patrick Buehler, 20, is a case in point [...] as a junior in anthropology, he currently holds $60,000 in debt and expects to owe $80,000 upon graduation. “I’ve wondered if going to college is still worth it. Her tips included (summarized):
Put dish soap on greasy pans first before water and rub it around
Throw out scrubby sponges when they smell.
Use vinegar for everything.
Buy a cheap pumice stone to scrub porcelain.
Shop at the 99 cent store for produce, food, etc.
Don't shop at Goodwill or Salvation army. Instead shop at local thrift stores.
"Couponing is a full-time job, and you often have to buy in large quantities."
There's some good advice there, but lacking in my opinion. Going over her tips, I'd add:
When dish sponges are getting smelly (actually before) but are in good shape, bleach them. Make sure you let the bleach soak in and disinfect the sucker. Another option is to wet them then pop them in the microwave. Also, wring them out and allow them to dry out between uses because most bacteria thrive only in moistness.
Pumice stones and vinegar are great, but the former can scratch some surfaces and the latter requires some good rinsing to remove the smell, but you know what cleans crud off the bath easily? Shampoo! It's made to remove the oils product buildup from hair, so it works great on soap scum. Buy a cheap bottle, apply with a rag or bath poof, let it sit a bit, then rinse clean.
Don't overlook the power of lemon juice, salt, and baking soda either. Google all the uses, from rust stain remover, metal polish to finger nail whitener (toothpaste works too).
Shopping only local thrift stores is a nice idea, but to be honest, most I've visited have fewer hours and poor selection than the big two. Then again, the main things I buy there are dishes and odds and ends for crafts. If you really have issue with their policies, it's a matter of comparing how important that is to your need. Growing up on a lower income, we didn't have that luxury.
"Couponing" can get out of control, but that doesn't mean it's not worth it. Check if any stores around you have double coupon days. Also keep them on hand for quick shopping trip, and don't clip willy-nilly. Save and organize the coupons you actually will use.
Here's a few more of my own:
Your oven racks looking icky with burnt on food? Put in your tub with a hot water and cheap powder dish-washing detergent. Let sit for a couple hours. To avoid scratching your tub, lay it on an old towel.
Buy store brand medicines. Check the active ingredients. 99% of the time they're the same and half as expensive.
Speaking of store or generic brands, don't be afraid to give them a try. There are still some products where I prefer the "name" brand -- the first time I tried a decent peanut butter growing up I knew I could never go back -- but they've come a long way since the old black and white minimalist packaging of the 80s.
Do the math when shopping. Is that $5 paper towel really cheaper than that $7 one? Calculate the cost per foot or square foot.
Don't buy brown paper to mail packages. Use paper bags from the store. It's sturdy, and I've not bought packing paper in years.
Love those sugar scrubs for the bath?* Make some yourself. There's many recipes online. The tiny bottles of oil or essence used in some recipes are the most expensive part, though, but it goes a long way, and, put into a cute inexpensive jar with a bit of decoration, they make great personalized gifts.
"Use-by dates and expiration dates aren’t strict mandates designed to save you from the brink of gastrointestinal hell, they’re more like guidelines."
*Note: Not everything do it yourself is cheaper. Given the slightly odd, angular character designs of Christmas, I think it would have been easy for a colorist to go rough and scratchy, or for a washed-out Dave Stewart styled pallette that often compliments the stark imagery of a Sean Phillips or a Dave Aja well. And that would have been effective enough, but it would totally have changed the vibe of the story, something more along the lines of pulpy noir. Instead, Chankhamma goes rich and lush, having the flush of a cheek, the texture of skin and the brightness of clothes really pop against the stark white, snowy landscape. It adds a warmth to the atmosphere, makes the characters feel more human and vulnerable, giving the story an almost fairy tale quality. If someone is going through a tough time, such as the example above, and asks for "prayers", i think it is rather a insensitive thing to insert your own religious views. Don't believe in a god but do care about the person? You could say, "I'll send good thoughts," or, "I hope everything works out."
In another situation, say someone is discussing their favorite show. If they want to get into the pros and cons, then I think criticism is welcome. But if they're just talking about what they like, saying another show is "better" or mentioning you "hate" the show can be annoying and at times, can come off as saying their tastes are superior. Upon reflection, I realize I myself have mentioned in discussions something "isn't my cup of tea" or, "I couldn't get into it", but I don't think I'm one to say X show is better than Y. It might be better for my tastes, but what I like might not be better for someone else. I think it's more polite to say something like, "If you like X, you might want to try Y", and let them decide what they think is better.
urn:lj:livejournal.com:atom1:kayay:614353
@attributes":
{"@attributes":
This is a fun little test of your writing. A search begins with parrots and micro-chipping, and somehow ends with stalking behavior. It's as if the internet is saying, "You need to see this." Or maybe it's my subconscious. Anyway, I came across this excerpt from a little known book by a group of psychologist.
...other features that may alert the examiner to the illegitimate victim, irrespective of the underlying diagnosis, include: disorganized or convoluted histories that cannot be verified of are falsified by the available evidence; the engagement of multiple therapists, moving from one to another at the first hint of skepticism; and the possession of dossiers of 'evidence', the latter often proving to be of dubious significance.
- Paul E. Mullen, Michele Pathé, Rosemary Purcell, Stalkers and Their Victims (Cambridge University Press)
Once I found that, I had to dig a little more, and this website had something to say that reassured me my own experience was far from unusual. In fact, ICP is actually quite predictable.
One aspect a stalking victim quickly notices is that the stalker often makes references to perceived wrongdoing by the victim, or straight out tells the victim in a number of different ways that the victim is the one who is at fault. Furthering on from this, the stalker will also often take on the role of the victim. Repeatedly telling the victim all the things they are doing bad to the stalker. They will even send "mercy" type messages to the victim… whereby the stalker literally behaves like an innocent little victim, who is now asking for your mercy, so that you stop doing whatever they think you are doing to them. [...]
...these "I'm The Victim" emails are sent with the express purpose that they will be released to other people in one way or another. It is a purposefully thought out and designed method to try to taint the evidence so to speak. [...] So that once they are released to others, they have already tainted the bowl of evidence with their own victimization storyline.[...] they are clearly demonstrating to the group involved that they are trying to get through to you (their victim), trying to make you see reason, why won't you leave them alone… and on and on and on. [...]
This is when a stalker is going through states of realization of what they have done, what they are doing, what they have become. They are going through moments of clearly seeing their own depravity, and evil sick deeds. And they don't want to admit to themselves what they are. It would cause a massive conflict in their minds to self admit what it is they really are. Which is evil. To overcome this, so that they can live with themselves, they must justify themselves. Not only to themselves so that they believe it, but to their victims as well. And in doing so, this is when the victim will receive these sporadic emails of the stalker's imaginary storyline alterations, whereby the story changes so that you become the perpetrator, and they become the helpless victim. They cannot deny the evidence of what they have done, so justification is the only option. In other words, the story now becomes that the stalker was somehow wronged by the victim and only did what they had to do to stop the imaginary perpetrator from doing whatever imaginary thing they were doing to the stalker.
It's textbook. It's exactly the behavior of ICP. The last paragraph is also insightful, for it implies certain things the victim says sparks the need of the stalker to justify themselves. Thus, a criticism of ethics might cause another outburst, thus illustrating that which the stalker him/herself, perhaps subconsciously, knows they're guilty of.
In my head this goes under the "nutcase in need of therapy" tag.
urn:lj:livejournal.com:atom1:kayay:613788
@attributes":
{"@attributes":
{"@attributes":
fraud scams theft & plagiarism
Imagine you wrote a book or drew a comic. Some are really horrible, the kind that make you suspect the publisher wanted to cash in on the manga craze of the early 2000s. As a resource for one completely new to manga, however, it may be useful.
Within those two categories it can be divided even further into straightforward figure drawing and more in depth discussion of sequential art. I suggest this because some people just enjoy doing pinups and splash pages. People who gripe too consistently usually don't remain on my feed for long. It's not that I don't think people shouldn't complain, but when I review some strangers' feeds I see complaints about a lot of relatively mundane things by people who, though they might not realize it, are among the privileged. That's not to say, either, "first world" people haven't a right to complain about their "first world problems", but it often feels like these people don't realize how lucky they are. Sometimes it feels as if these people believe that the world owes them something.
For example, a college student may complain how much they spent on video games, how much their phone bill is, the long drive home in traffic, the term paper due or the test preventing them from partying with their friends. While they're legitimate complains for a person of that age, there's another way to look at their "problems": They have the extra income to purchase games, afford a smartphone, attend college, got out with friends and party, and drive and maintain an air conditioned car. Several, actually, but one in particular who was known for his ballsy cat antics about town. The post from the bookshop owner in this thread makes it clear that the cat was known by the town for doing amusing things, and observed doing them by many--that his "celebrity," if it can be called that, came as a direct result of his own amusing cat actions. The bookshop owner contacted a publisher who contacted an author who wrote a book about a fiddle-playing cat in Tobermory who has slightly more than fuck-all to do with that or any actual Tobermory cat. The author invented the story herself, using the real cat and the real town as her inspiration.
There happened to be an artist in the town who took some photographs of cats in Tobermory and created a Facebook page for "the" Tobermory cat. It is unclear which cat, or if it matters. This is the only reason the artist was approached.
The artist refused. Even though he could have benefited from the publicity, even though the town could have benefited, he insisted that the idea for the book was his. That no one could possibly have come up with a story about a Tobermory cat without stealing it from his Facebook page, even though there were multiple Tobermory cats in existence, even though one of them was known in town by everybody else for doing amusing things, even though somebody had already written a book about a Tobermory cat some time ago, even though books about cats are as commonplace as cat poop.
The writer/illustrator told the whole story only recently after nearly a year of harassment.
Two days later, the Artist started his campaign on Facebook. He had been visited by two thieves, he posted. They came to his house to steal the Tobermory cat.His followers were furious. Who were these people? How dare they? The Artist ignored this question. He posted again. And again. And again. He never missed an opportunity to make some snarky remark about robbers or thieves and then off he'd go, drawing comparisons with 'an Edinburgh illustrator' or 'an Edinburgh publisher'. And the Artist's followers lapped it up. Who were these awful people, they demanded? Poor artist, they soothed, how awful for him. Then, thankfully, the Artist stopped posting for a while. In the blissful silence, I got on with my book. [...]
By April, I was almost finished with the preparatory drawings in pencil for the book. We were all getting excited by now; watching the book take shape is a bit like seeing prints come up in the tray of developer fluid way back in the dark days of photography. I'd been keeping an occasional eye out on Facebook just to check that the Artist hadn't restarted his campaign of name-calling, and sadly, in the spring, he began again. In a cleverly targeted series of posts, he returned the Tobermory cat back to Facebook and began to post once more. On Facebook and Twitter. More comments about thieving publishers and Edinburgh illustrators. After an absence of several months, his followers were delighted to have him back. And then, on my way to do a library visit in Perth, the Artist posted on the Twitter account of the library I was about to visit. An hour before my event. He was wondering if they had any books on copyright or the theft of intellectual property.[...]
Then the Artist began to tweet to selected numbers of my @DebiGliori followers. Followers like the Edinburgh Book Festival. A fellow-author. A fellow-illustrator. Did they know, he tweeted, that someone they followed was engaged in the theft of intellectual property? Not naming me. No. This was a horrible game of cat-and-mouse, skirting perilously close to defamation, but not so close that I could make it stop.
On it went. Until, after posting a final silly thing on Facebook asking his 'friends' to fill in an online survey about who they thought the idea for the Tobermory Cat belonged to- the Artist or the Colonial Publisher, finally, with everyone howling "Who? Who? Who Is this colonial publisher and his thief of an illustrator? " the Artist posted, on the May bank holiday, a self-pitying post, the gist of which was
I can't carry on with my Facebook page any more. It's no longer any fun. Birlinn Books are going to publish a book by Debi Gliori called The Tobermory Cat. I have no option but to stop doing this Facebook page. It's been a lot of fun but....goodbye.[..]
As we drove home, the 'friends' of the Artist were massing on Facebook. They were leaving me messages. They knew where I lived. They were digging around on the Internet, Googling me, digging up whatever they could find.
The Guardian has covered this story and there's a long thread here where the artist Angus Stewart appears, insisting he's right even when presented with UK law. For example, let's assume Amy -- a person I just made up -- writes about her bad experiences with cats. Her roommate kept a filthy litterbox, the cat had fleas, got pregnant and peed everywhere. Consequently, wanted to get rid of it and "hates that cat". Later, when talking to friends, I relate that Amy said "I hate cats." Without any additional information, such as mentioning I'm paraphrasing, people may believe Amy is a cat-hater.
Mine is a simple, benign example, but my point is this is a something I've seen people do, sometimes intentionally. In my opinion, it's misleading and, when it comes to certain issues, potentially harmful. In my example, "I hate that cat," could be conveyed to a third party as, "I want to hurt that cat," and now Amy is not only a cat-hater but an animal abuser as well.
I think the internet, however, has made it harder to misquote. It's easier to go back and point to the record of what was said. Unfortunately, in a way the damage is already done. The belief of what Amy supposedly said is already in people's heads, and some folk stubbornly prefer to believe what they thought she said rather than what she actually said, even if in black and white. Look at the contradictory statements of politicians highlighted by programs like The Daily Show. Even when presented with proof, they deny. At worst we'd lose a couple of hours.
Long story short: it's bad.
Aesthetically it's pleasing. Splashes of old colors clash against the predominantly gray and white background of the woods and village. But that's the only good thing about this film. The movie doesn't know what it wants to be: horror, romance or mystery. At times I suspect it's even unintentionally comedy.
Too much can be compared to Twilight. Longing looks, switching head shots, cringe worthy dialogue, and "passionate" scenes come straight from Twilight 101. Additional echos of it appear in the girl-loves-boy-she-can't-have-while-being-pressured-to-choose-another-boy theme with supernatural undertones in a soppy, contrived love triangle. The two guys, however, later reluctantly work together to save the girl after uttering predictable and familiar threats to each other about not hesitating the kill the other if he's the wolf. In the end, one must give up on the girl because she obviously loves the other from the start, and though the movie tries to play up the "oh no who will she choose" suspense, there is none. There's no fascination value to the mystery or real emotional connection to the romance.
After a trio of confusing and/or uninteresting trailers -- how can anyone figure out what The Tree of Life is about based on this -- the movie begins with an aerial view of snowy foothills and evergreen forests. I suspected Hardwicke was recycling some of her Twilight footage. From there the camera zooms into a simple thatched roof village plagued by a werewolf "for generations". Then we're treated to an annoying narration by the protagonist, Valerie, describing her childhood and the dangers of the woods and the wolf. But as long as the villagers sacrifice livestock once a month to the wolf, everything is more or less fine, though the people still live in fear of the full moon. Next comes a scene that introduces the child of a woodcutter, Peter. He and Valerie trap and kill a white rabbit which is supposed to show how she's different from other girls, tomboyish, and has a dark side or something. But I was marveling at how a supposedly wild rabbit -- curiously, snowy white in the middle of a forest devoid of snow -- immediately entered the box cage (propped up on a stick) as the two children "hide" about 5 feet away, then sat calmly as child-Valerie lifts the box-cage and scoops it up. With wildlife like that around, everyone must be a master hunter.
Fast forward, and Valerie is the different, lonely, most beautiful in the village. She's also strangely popular and desired by the two most desirable young bachelors around: dark, perpetually brooding, dangerous <strike>Edward</strike> Peter and wealthy, safe, moping blacksmith <strike>Jacob</strike> Henry. She also sports a gaggle of shallow secondary character as friends. But her heart belongs to the former, and several minutes are devoted to the pair flirting and flirting and flirting some more in the woods, then talking about running off after it's revealed she is betrothed to *gasp* Henry. They decide on the spot to run away together, no food, clothing or essentials. What a great idea! Fortunately Fate interrupts their stupidity, for the wolf has killed someone: Valerie's sister. The two rush to the scene of the crime. Grief, grieving, fear of the wolf, and angry villagers rallying in the tavern follows.
From a review of the book based on the film:
So, here we have the main character, Valerie. She’s different, special, can hear and see things that others cannot,[...] but she has no less than four close girl friends and the eyes, hearts and loins of the two most desirable young men in town. Henry is the wealthy, desirable son of the blacksmith over whom all the girls in town (apart from Valerie) are seen to be ‘losing it’ (p. 30). Peter could have been drawn straight from the Teen Heartthrob Handbook: ‘a heart-stoppingly handsome, dark-haired young man. He looked wild and haunted, wearing all black, like a horse that could not be tamed.’ (p. 39). But of course, looks aren’t everything: ‘He understood Valerie’s impulses. He understood adventure; he understood not following the rules.’ (p. 7).
Valerie’s friends are as interchangeable as they are forgettable. There’s a prudish one and one who’s defining trait is her décolletage. They exist purely to validate Valerie’s popularity with their jealousy over her betrothal to Henry.
After mistakenly believing they've killed the wolf, the village celebrates. Heavy beat music with a Renaissance tinge plays as the people perform hip grinding harvest dances with a touch of implied Lesbianism. I didn't know farming communities of the middle ages danced like that.
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
Blah blah blah stuff happens, the wolf isn't dead, the priest/hunter Father Solmon says (paraphrased), "Neener neener I told you so," the wolf "speaks" to Valerie in her head and wants her to leave with him, she wonders if it might be Peter since he wanted her to run away with him, people die, Valerie notices Father Solmon replaced a few of his fingernails with silver, he dies, the wolf turns out to be Valerie's father, he kills her grandmother/his mother who didn't know he or her husband was a wolf but just figured it out, Peter and Valerie fight the wolf, Peter hits it in the back with an axe and Valarie delivers the finishing blow with.... silver fingernails. That's right. Silver fingernails. During his fight with the wolf Father Solmon lost his hand, and Valerie took it with her in her basket before going to warn her grandmother. She shoves the disembodied hand into the wolf's stomach, probably penetrating an inch at most, and he dies. Peter, however, was bitten and is fated to become a wolf, so he leaves the village to learn to control his new ability. There's some weird, pointless scene where Valerie imagines them walking through snowy mountains, her red cape blowing behind her, and the pair having sex in the snow. She stays behind in dead Grandmother's house -- remember she's so different and special she's happier there away from the main village -- and waits for his return, prompting a line I hated from Peter. "I knew you'd say that." Not, "I hoped". Ick. finally the movie ends with another narration by Valarie explaining how Peter stood by her even when she doubted him, as if the audience didn't just watch it themselves; it's a good example of narration/voice over being used badly in a film. We decided to visit both. The former I’d only attended once before a couple of years back as a volunteer; the latter I’ve volunteered once and attended once (for one day).
The mood of each is different from cons like ECCC, PAX and SDCC, but I had a hard time accurately describing the feel of each gathering when asked. Sakuracon has a predominately younger crowd, and with it comes a lot of the attitude one would expect. Comic and game con attendees, from my experience, have a broader demographic. The indy and small press presence at anime cons always felt smaller to me, with fans of popular series like Sailor Moon, Bleach, Death Note and Street Fighter, being the most vocal and obvious. Less so are the Uzumaki (Junji Ito) and Blame (Tsutomu Nihei) fans. Norwescon, in contrast, has an older demographic. Maybe some of it has to do with the amount of time, money and space required to craft the kind of items I saw. Norwescon does costumes really well; there were some really gorgeous outfits. Both are pretty gregarious gatherings, with Sakuracon seeming the more so of the two, though they lacked the sort of spontaneous inclusion of strangers into groups I experienced at game and comic cons. That's not to say people at these two conventions were standoffish or snooty, but both as an attendee and volunteer I felt it easier to join in a conversation with complete strangers at PAX. Perhaps it’s because the nature of games is to engage in an activity with another person; you’re encouraged to join in.
I have a lot of thoughts, questions, and concerns about Norwescon, which we spent more time at. They’re held up as shining examples of self publishing success. But listing writers from a hundred years ago (or more) doesn’t seem relevant to today’s industry as publishing was a whole other game then. More recent examples, meanwhile, are more the exception rather than the rule.
I’m not against self publishing, but I am against deception and ignorance. Self publishing can work, and it might be for you. It does allow greater control, but it also requires a lot of time and capital; you must be writer, marketer, accountant, editor and cover artist -- the ability to poorly slap a bunch of stock photos and font together in Photoshop btw does not a good cover artist make. Being a successful commercially published author isn’t easy either; both roads require a whole lot of effort (and luck) to reach the level of success of the “big names”. Neither self nor commercial publishing is, in my opinion, superior to the other for everyone and in all situations. Goals are good, and dreaming big isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it can set one up for disappointment, so to pretend every author has an excellent chance of being the next Amanda Hocking or Christopher Paolini does the writer no favors.
This is a list compiled from various websites that I’ve seen quoted as people who’ve self published:
William Blake, Virginia Woolf, William Morris, Walt Whitman, James Joyce, James Redfield (The Celestine Prophecy), Stephen Crane, E.E. Cummings, Oscar Wilde, Tom Peters (In Search of Excellence), Edward Tufte, Elynn Harris, Matthew Reilly, Howard Fast (Spartacus), D.H. Lawrence, Thomas Paine, Christopher Paolini (Eragon), Edgar Allen Poe, George Bernard Shaw, Upton Sinclair, G.P. Taylor (Shadowmancer), Mark Twain, Henry David Thoreau, Deepak Chopra, Benjamin Franklin, Richard Paul Evans (The Christmas Box), Zane Grey, Rudyard Kipling, Ezra Pound, Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hanson (Chicken Soup for the Soul), Carl Sandburg, Gertrude Stein, John Grisham (A Time to Kill), and Stephen King.
It’s impressive at first glance, until you do some research.
Many of the older writers mentioned come from a time when "self-publish" had a different meaning, a time of no computers or internet or digital printing technology. Some of the later ones who actually did self publish something did so after they were already well known in literary circles.
That leaves us with only a handful that are more legitimate examples, but even those aren’t cut and dry cases. Christopher Paolini, for example, had parents who owned a small press; they had contacts, experience and money, but it wasn't until Carl Hiassen that passed the book on to Knopf that Eragon became a hit.
We were learning that we could not take the sales to the next level without duplicating the process a large publishing house uses-- the distribution system, the marketing, etc. Once Knopf had proven they were really serious about the offer, that they would give the book the marketing attention we hoped for, we were happy to have them take Eragon off our hands. [1]
Stephen King did try an online publishing experiment, but it didn't go as well as hoped. He also released some limited editions through small presses, but those weren't self published. Or perhaps they're referring to the stories he sold to his friends while in school. The Christmas Box, by Richard Paul Evans, is an interesting case because it's a publishing phenomenon so rare and remarkable. And the author of The Celestine Prophecy spent thousands to print his novel then worked his ass off traveling to bookstores, convincing them to stock his book.
People can and have become successful through self-publishing, but people can and have become rich through the lottery. Does that mean I should invest everything in lotto tickets if I want to become wealthy? My point is that pointing to a few successes doesn’t prove the superiority of one path over another. It does show it can be done, but it doesn’t prove how likely it is to happen to the average writer.
What Amanda Hocking has proven is that one outlier will be used over and over again and forever to prove a nonexistent point. I could just as easily keep screaming "Dan Brown! Dan Brown! We can all be like Dan Brown! Dan Brown proves my point! Dan Brown! Don't you want to be like Dan Brown!" to argue the superiority of commercial publishing. I am as likely to have Dan Brown's success as any self-pubbed author is likely to duplicate Amanda Hocking's.
I want to end with some letters from Jack London to aspiring writers. The sample is not complete but I think it gets his point across. Someone used Mr London as an example of a “great American voice” that didn’t take a writing class, but just “bounced off a ship after a sojourn in the Yukon and began pounding out great tales on a typewriter”, as if his success was instantaneous. It's very true that one doesn't need a "fancy education" or "letters behind your name" to write well, but it doesn't mean those writers sure didn't try their best to improve.
urn:lj:livejournal.com:atom1:kayay:599837
@attributes":
{"@attributes":
{"@attributes":
writing thoughts
Dorchester Publishing was founded in 1971 and was well regarded, but in the past few years the pub began spiraling towards disaster. The pub is dis-invited from RWA.
Aug 2010 - Dorchester, "known as a company ahead of the curve and willing to take risks", sends out an email to its authors saying the pub will cease mass market publication in favor of e-books and digital printing to "fully capitalize on the most profitable emerging technologies", effective Sept 1st, 2010. Dorchester also fires its sales force.
A few days later editorial director Leah Hultenschmidt contradicts what Chief Executive John Prebich said about the publisher going digital and print-on-demand only. She explains, "It’s true Dorchester is going digital, but only for the next six months."
In the same month, authors learn the publisher has also let all but one editor go and is apparently not filling orders to vendors, bookstores or authors.
Just a week from their all-digital announcement, Dorchester lets their digital director go.
Sept 2010 - The month's releases are announced, but all are “out of stock", and there’s no indication as to where or how to get e-versions. it's rumored all titles are being returned by Borders, B&N, etc. Meanwhile, up in Canada older Dorchester titles are all allegedly unavailable on Chapters’ website while new titles are reportedly not even listed.
Some authors report getting reversion letters on their books. Some are stilled owed thousands in back-royalties with no indication when they’ll be paid. E-book versions of at least some Dorchester titles are available, including some titles that have reverted. Some True magazine authors are told that their lack of payment is their own fault for failing to send invoices.
Oct 2010 - Authors who submitted manuscripts three or more years earlier start getting rejection slips.
Nov 2010 - Dorchester hires a new CEO, Robert Anthony to replace John Prebich. Robert plans to “revitalize” the publisher, but seems to have a marketing, rather than publishing, background.
Subscribers to True Story and the other True titles are notified there will be a delay in printing their December 2010 Issue that will cause the magazine to be delivered up to 4 weeks late.
Dec 2010 - The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) puts Dorchester on probation.
Jan 2010 - Some of Dorchester’s magazines are up for sale.
Feb 2010 - The Trues are up for sale.
March 2010 - Dorchester announces a contest for readers to help select backlist titles to be released as e-books, entering them for a chance to win $25 worth of e-books. How the pub is going to get the e-rights for books that came out before e-books were even a possibility isn’t specified.
Unhappy people comment on Dorchester’s Facebook page, but the comments are deleted on an hourly basis.
Multiple authors continue to report their books are still being sold in e-format despite having their rights reverted back to them by the publisher.
By the end of March, Dorchester insists they're "committed to solving the problem... and treating all authors fairly". CEO Anthony acknowledges the company had to “prioritize its cash flow", resulting in not all authors being paid.
Horror Writers Association (HWA) reportedly dis-invites Dorchester from the annual Bram Stoker Awards.
"}]}
