Last notes on Ideon

JUST DO IT

Originally, UQ and I had planned to release the entirety of Space Runaway Ideon’s BD encodes under the Encodergasm name and make it a quick job. We released it in two shapes: the 720p encodes as done by Encodergasm, RX782 himself, and re-encodes of those rips in a much more compact form under UQ’s name. Both versions contained a complete re-translation from the Shin-Getter release by Universal Quantifier.
When we were finished with the primary task, we had a new one. Go through and check for any errors or problems, fix them, release a batch torrent. A simple task to go along with pretty much every release. I asked people not to compile an unofficial batch.

Three years pass.

Life got in the way. Neither of us wanted to do it, neither of us cared enough, and after a certain point we had a good idea that the series would be seeing an official release – the only question was whether it would be the remaster or some “SD-on-BD” nonsense. So instead of ending with any finality, I made a few promises I was afraid to actually address for years now as life got in the way and doors stayed open far past the point they should have been shut with finality. For that, I apologize, but I have to be clear.

With the official localization by Maiden Japan, we would cease any and all work on the project. Our work, as fare as we were and are concerned, is finished. Every episode was translated, the episodes remain in archival quality, there is nothing more to do. With an official release as an option, we are satisfied with this result.

That being said, I personally am not content to just let data die online in obscurity. Even if the official release exists, I do want to say:
If you want our full EG release for Ideon, I would suggest Bakabt. Perhaps Nyaa might be helpful too.
If you are interested in the UQ “SD” release, since they are not directly competing with an official product, I am comfortable leaving a link to download it right here.

EG HD release: Please find offsite. No links will be given.

UQ “SD” release: Link

Official BD release: Link

With that I can finally say the door is closed. That’s all there is to say on the matter.

Space Runaway Ideon Episode 39 BD [FINAL]

Still don’t really know what to say. It’s a weird feeling. It’s over! Ideon has been completely resubbed on the bluray rips.

Batch is coming. It’s been a long run, but here we are, and the project is over. Now’s just the victory lap and trying to find out how submitting to BakaBT works.

Space Runaway Ideon Episode 38 BD

IT is come, the Ide has Awoken. There is no turning back.

THE IDE HAS BEEN INVOKED. ALL IS LOST.

Man, Tomino is really hit or miss. He’s often nonsensical in his dialogue direction, even in the original japanese, and is legendary for it. He over-emphasizes the importance of body-language as a communication and characterization device in a medium that can barely handle characterization through straight exposition, and the results are often stilted and overdone. He constantly bitches at everyone for not “growing up” and telling stories that aren’t “stupid” yet he has a clear fascination with robots FIGHTAN ROBOTS FOR THE SAKE OF COOL FIGHTS, sometimes at the expense of his own narrative.

There’s even more I could say, but I digress. All that said, why do we pay attention to his works? Because every so often, you can see it shining through his work, the tortured but indomitable spark of divine inspiration, grand ideas aching to be let loose. A true creator’s spirit. It’s impossible to ignore. That he has quite a few really good works also helps.

Ideon isn’t always great; people often describe the series itself as “hit or miss”. But honestly, it’s a classic for damn good reason, and towards the end it’s obvious to see why.

Space Runaway Ideon Episode 36 BD

It’s been a hot minute but life gets in the way leave me alone

Some fun stuff going on here – episodes like this are where, for the most part, the show really knows what notes to hit tonally. As in, it gets all the plot advancement it needs while also building up to the tragic ending we all know is coming at this point. They’re trapped. And not by the buff clan; not even the Ide will let them escape.

Space Runaway Ideon Episode 34 BD

Super important things happening in this episode, with the true nature of the Ide revealed for the first time, the potential ramifications of which might paint the future events in the series in a much more foreboding light.

Well animated action complements an important episode, as well as an obvious reference to Dune in the Domou creatures of Domou Star.

Space Runaway Ideon Episode 31 BD

Seriously, not dead. Project is alive and well, and we should probably be maintaining a better pace from here on out.

This is the Bes episode, where he’s forced to do some shitty things for the good of the people he loves, all thanks to some scheming assholes on Earth. It’s not paced that well, and it has quite a few issues with getting its message across like all of Ideon, but I believe it does its job well enough. The scene from the image above was particularly poignant, I guess.
