Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water – Nautilus Story Blu-ray Remaster Project + Translation

Torrents:

This has, indeed, been years in the making. When I said that I would do this years ago, not even I believed it. Thanks to dedicated team members, we pulled it off, and with flying colors I should like to say.

There will likely be more to say about the process later – there is much to say about the scope of the project, its intentions, did we succeed at those intentions (yes), is it flawless (mostly), is there anything we could have done better, how did we accomplish it, etc.
In the meanwhile I’m going to sit back, relax and take a nap. Click the links.

Detonator Orgun 3 – Final Battle Laserdisc + Batch

Disc 3 - Front

Torrents:

Would you look at that. I did something good for the world to justify my existence as a “fansubber”. There’s a lot of simple logic to “fake it till you make it”, I think.

Not much to say because, figuratively speaking, absolutely no one visits here or will read this. I’ll probably think of some platitudes to spin up later. If anyone does want to come on over and join the team (there are two of us now!) it would be sick, honestly. You can stop by my, our discord and drop a word, if you like.

Detonator Orgun 2 – Pursuit Laserdisc

Disc 2 - Front

I should have just released this as a batch! But what else is new, I don’t often think straight!
Man, this episode has its ups and downs, which would be worth having constructive discussion over, but I feel any such conversation would be completely dominated by “Holy shit, wow, Norio Wakamoto goes 250% over the top in this in the best way possible. And it’s incredible”.
That’s fact, by the way. Wakamoto is in this one in a big was and it’s simply the best. Maybe that’s just me? Either way, give it a look, or just wait for the batch. It shouldn’t be long.

No one in the world expected this.

A lot to say about this so I’ll try to keep it brief.
Detonator Orgun was released from 1991-1992 as a total of three OVAs, originally – and exclusively! – for Laserdisc. Ignoring the fact that it was somehow released in america hardsubbed on LD from 1995-1996, it was only really available outside of Japan with the DVD releases in the UK (1997) and the US (2001). These releases were not good. They destroyed and compressed detail, horribly messed up the colors, and just generally looked like someone covered the series in vaseline. This is unfortunate because, well, the LDs don’t look that great to begin with.

To start, there’s horrid color bleed – look at the opening credits and you’ll see what I mean. That’s not a result of faulty encoding, or a poor rip, that’s baked into the source. So are the rainbows. So many fucking rainbows. Not only was the image above chosen to demonstrate how good this series looks now, it was also chosen to show how apparent the rainbows are (if you can’t see them, I’m not going to point them out, for your sake). There’s some crazy overexposure in a lot of scenes, an absurd pulsating light effect whenever the “camera” points at an in-universe screen, and more.

Now – how and why? Well, I would guess the bleed is the result of faulty deinterlacing – I assume someone, while this was being mastered, switched chroma sub-samples from 4:2:2 to whatever else before deinterlacing and royally screwed the colors. As for the rainbows, your guess is as good as mine – I’ve heard something about faulty cables or some such, but in this specific case, who really knows, as nothing can remove them. Derainbow. Dedot. Bifrost. CC and a 14-line anti-rainbow nuclear ball of code a VERY experienced encoder gave me, NOTHING removes it. I don’t claim to be an expert, I just claim to be someone who used every tool at my disposal and the best everyone I knew had to offer, and nothing made a bit of difference. Seriously, if anyone has any ideas, hit me up, I’ll try to implement it before the batch. Anyway, for every thing else, I think I might have to just put it down to technical novice. It seems weird to call the people who made this beautiful art novices, but I am entirely unsure they knew how to actually master for the Laserdisc format. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Really, who knows.

That being said, I was really happy to do this. Orgun is great and I really thinkt it deserves better than us exclusively having releases based on the R1 DVDs. For anyone that actually comes here (LOL), and hasn’t seen it before, I really urge you to give it a shot.

Hey.

Been working on this with /m/Subs to completely retranslate the series, with the bluray remaster as the base. There’s not much to say, it’s a great show, watch it.
I had my reasons for disappearing for so long, especially after making promises, but I’m just going to have to leave it there. If you believed in me at some point, I’m going to have to apologize for perhaps disappointing some.

Full series released which took way longer than it should have. Sorry? Whatever, though, I’m not sure that many people care.

As Nyaa is dead, it can only be logical to proliferate. Consolidation is what caused the nyaapocalypse in the first place – with everything grouped around one site, calamity was inevitable when it INEVITABLY went down. As such, I’ll be using multiple sites from this point onwards to output torrents. At the moment, Pantsu is going full schizo and having one of its episodes again, so only an anidex link for now. However, considering the entire userbase of pantsu is already massive thanks to 2chan migration, I will likely continue to post there even though it’s pretty dumb.

Still working on the Ideon batch, there is a lot of content to go through and proofread, and we’re both kind of burntout. But a job done well is better than a job done quick. Any other NON TRANSLATION requests, hit me up.

Space Runaway Ideon Episode 38 BD

IT is come, the Ide has Awoken. There is no turning back.

THE IDE HAS BEEN INVOKED. ALL IS LOST.

Man, Tomino is really hit or miss. He’s often nonsensical in his dialogue direction, even in the original japanese, and is legendary for it. He over-emphasizes the importance of body-language as a communication and characterization device in a medium that can barely handle characterization through straight exposition, and the results are often stilted and overdone. He constantly bitches at everyone for not “growing up” and telling stories that aren’t “stupid” yet he has a clear fascination with robots FIGHTAN ROBOTS FOR THE SAKE OF COOL FIGHTS, sometimes at the expense of his own narrative.

There’s even more I could say, but I digress. All that said, why do we pay attention to his works? Because every so often, you can see it shining through his work, the tortured but indomitable spark of divine inspiration, grand ideas aching to be let loose. A true creator’s spirit. It’s impossible to ignore. That he has quite a few really good works also helps.

Ideon isn’t always great; people often describe the series itself as “hit or miss”. But honestly, it’s a classic for damn good reason, and towards the end it’s obvious to see why.
