Quick not-a-real-update
Chakotay by Cassievalentine

Yes, my last two posts have been Dear *insert exchange* writer letters.

Yes, I'm incredibly busy (this always happens in November/December).

Yes, I've been sick. This has not, sadly, diminished the being busy. It's just made me way more tired.

Yes, I have seen (and utterly loved and adored) Star Trek XI (there is a long rambling play by play post in the future).

Yes, I am doing mini_wrimo again this year. It's hard but I'm managing.

Yes, it is incredibly hot where I am right now. This is supposed to change tomorrow. Please let it.

Yes, I do love and miss all of you very much! I try to comment where I can and hope to have some more posts here soon.

New (some renewed) loves/obsessions: Ben Cross, Bruce Greenwood, NCIS LA (at least the slash part, still iffy on the show itself), Christopher Eccleston, Karl Urban, Kristen Bell (new girlcrush!), Heroes. I'm sure there are others.

Also my yuletide source! I'm not saying what it is, but my god, I couldn't have picked a more perfect assignment for me if I'd given myself the assignment. And it has renewed my love for it so very much. My assignment is probably the best I've had since doing yuletide - not that the others haven't been good, I just really, really like this one.

And now to bed. I have napped and need more.

It's been forever!

Or at least a really long time since I updated here.

There hasn't been a lot going on beyond fannish love, and there have been so many other things to do (RL is being very, very RL-ish) that updating here has slowed down.

So a short list of numbered points.

1. I watched all of Merlin. I am madly in love with Anthony Stewart Head as Uther. I am not so much slashing Merlin and Arthur - in that I really don't see myself writing them, though I've read a bit. My ships are apparently Uther/Morgana (because omg, hit all my kinks at once except the slash one) and Uther/Gaius and, er, cut for squicky shipCollapse ). I'm also fond of Uther/Merlin and Gwen/Morgana but a lot of my fondness is more going awww about what's onscreen - that's how I am with Merlin/Arthur too, really.

It got long, so under the cut for the restCollapse )

Disclaimer: My only knowledge of kink is from RPing/writing it. If I get anything wrong let me know - I won't be angry about it. I don't think I've made any egregious errors, but one never knows.

And what about RACK anyway?Collapse )

Updating from work...

Well things are going fairly well, if still rather busy (hence not updating so much).

Enrolled for a computer course through TAFE which will likely cut into AIMing time even more, sadly, but luckily RL crises have slowed so it might let me have some more. I don't know yet. Anyway I'm always around on email (less distracting than AIM) and on LJ when I get the chance to.

Fannishly I'm waiting to acquire the new Torchwood episodes but I have a source.

And... I've started watching Life On Mars. Yes I got it for Christmas and it's taken me a month - that should give you an indication of the RL problems' severity.

It took me precisely one and a half episodes to fall head over heels in love with Sam Tyler. I am such a fan of the guy (or girl!) out of his time. My favourite Quantum Leap character was Sam Beckett (and not because he was the lead, either). I always like, in those horribly over the top but fun, time travel romance novels, the one (hero or heroine) who is out of their time. And do I even need to mention my gigantic thing for a certain Captain Jack Harkness? Or that lovely time-travelling Doctor Who is always out of his time, really?

I just am really enjoying the show and characters - I think Annie's lovely and I'm favouring Sam/Chris over Sam/Gene as far as slash goes - I think I like Gene but not that way. At least at this point. Plus I think Chris is sort of cute too (though not as swoon-making as Sam), and they had a nice scene in the second episode. Besides, Sam wears leather. That's always a plus with me. But I think I may be shipping Sam/Annie cos she's so adorable, really.

Also John Simm's a really good actor - I've seen him in three and a half (I wasn't paying attention when 24 Hour Party People was on telly to say I've seen it) roles so far and he's completely different in all of them. Plus he's sort of really cute.

I also recently acquired the movie Factory Girl on DVD and I really liked it. Longer review coming when I have time :) but it's really good and I was surprised that Sienna Miller was a far better actress than I've been led to believe. And Guy Pearce was a completely amazing Andy Warhol. Plus it was an interesting idea about a gay man falling for a woman (especially Guy's comments on the extras). Definitely an intriguing film.

And oh yes, have John Barrowman's (you thought I wouldn't mention him? Hee) latest CD. It's still my personal playlist of things I would have wished him to record, or near as. Though there are low lights. And lots of highlights. Again, review forthcoming.

Last but not least, remember, the Doctor Who/Torchwood porn battle is still ongoing: http://joanne-c.livejournal.com/711738.html

Name a character from one of my fandoms and I'll give you (a) three facts about them from my personal canon/fanon, (b) a reason he/she is not perfect, (c) a reason he/she is awesomecakes, (d) five things that never happened to that character or (e) five people that character never fell in love with and why. You pick the character. I pick the letter.

And no promises - but for certain characters I may do all five.

Things I might not post because of possible fandom reactions
Jack Rose 2 by Christn7
joanne_c
There was a thread or three on fandom_me's journal where there was some discussion of what, if anything, would people not post because of fandom's reactions to that story.

And I thought, "there's nothing I wouldn't post. If fandom doesn't like it, they don't have to read it. So what if I go against the OTP/prefer non-canon slash pairings to the canon one/like to write frequently slashed guys in het/like the girls in canon enough to pair them with the guys or with each other/write RPF/write minor character fic/etc, etc."

But then I realised. That's not completely true. It's mostly-to-entirely-true, yes. But there is actually one subject matter I might be hesitant about writing and therefore posting (er, that's aside from the stuff I'll never write cause it squicks or bores me or I just can't write it, of course).

And it annoys me somewhat that it's this subject because fandom is perfectly accepting of the opposite.

What would I have some hesitation in writing and posting?

Canonically and/or actually (in the case of RPF) gay characters in het fic. And it annoys me that this causes me hesitation. Because though we may all say that there's no such thing as canonically confirmed sexuality, when a guy's shown dating women, liking women, kissing women, in bed with women? It's not out of the realm of possibility that he's straight. That doesn't prevent me from slashing men I see as straight. I will (to go onto another tangent) presume bisexuality rather than homosexuality, but that doesn't negate that I write men (and women) I am sure are straight in my own mind in situations some would see as gay.

And it irritates me slightly that the opposite is frowned upon.

Yes, I would want to see a lot of work put into a story writing a gay character in a het relationship. I would want the author to show their work. To see the character examining himself as much as I would like to see the characters in slash examine themselves sometimes. To see him realising that his attraction to this woman is real and it's not wrong. It's just different. And maybe for authors to show what they see in canon that leads to this, or to write it so it works in an RPF medium. It's not impossible. It's something that could be very beautifully done. It's something I want to do.

And yet I hesitate doing more than thinking about it in my own mind.

Because I do. I have a few of these pairings in various (RPF and not) fandoms I can see, and I know it'd take a lot of work. But I'd do that work (doing that work may be what's prevented me from finishing anything, I'll admit that). I'd show how he got from guys only to guys and girls (or girl - yes I would do "I'm not straight for anyone but you" because I find that more likely). I'd write him as not abandoning guys for girls, but making the choice he wanted to make.

And what would be so very different to that than slash? I'm afraid I don't see a great deal of difference.

So that's my thinking on that one.

Clearly this is Matt Rippy week...
Jack/Jack 1 by LoveHP

Not only does the Torchwood episode Captain Jack Harkness air here (yay!), I just picked up my DVD of Beyond The Sea which he is in with Kevin Spacey and Kate Bosworth. I think I know what I'm doing this weekend... or at least watching.

Plus this week Jack is back on Doctor Who on the TV - yay!

It is a good fannish week.

Give me a character name and I'll answer at least one of all of (but you don't have to put a wild card one in if you don't have one) the following things about him or her in another post.

1) Why I like him/her.
2) Why I dislike him/her.
3) What plot I'd use in a fic about him/her.
4) What superpower he/she would have.
5) Who would be his/her ideal partner.
6) WILD CARD

If there's a question you've always wanted answered about a character, say "WILD CARD" in your comment and ask it. I'll give you my thoughts.

Fandoms: Classic rock slash (Stones, Beatles, can make a stab at The Who, Velvet Underground), HP, Lost, NCIS, CSI, Highlander, X-Files, Days Of Our Lives, Dr Who (new series only please), Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Trixie Belden, Time Trax, The Magnificent Seven (tv show canon only), David Bowie and his connections, Queer As Folk (more familiar with US than UK except the leads in UK), all Treks except Enterprise, Quantum Leap, Spiderman (movieverse), X-Men (movieverse), Lord Of The Rings, Superman Returns, Smallville, general RPS (includes RPG characters I play), various movies and books (throw something out and see if it sticks).
