Environmental pollution has become a major issue worldwide due to increasing industrial release o... more Environmental pollution has become a major issue worldwide due to increasing industrial release of emerging contaminants (ECs). ECs are primarily synthetic organic compounds that pose serious risks to human health and biota. Currently, there are no regulatory standards for ECs due to lack of information on their toxic effects. ECs such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pesticides, and flame retardants have been detected in waste and wastewaters. In the current scenario, effluent treatment processes are ineffective in removing ECs and therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of efficient and cost-effective treatment technologies that can be applied to industrial scales and effluent treatment plants. This chapter provides an overview of the fate, behavior, biomonitoring, toxicity of ECs and their removal approaches.

Phytoremedeation has emerged as an ecofriendly, extremely cheap and highly promising technology for reclamation of degraded land to solve the looming trouble of heavy metal pollution. After the research of few decades, plenty of improvements and advances have been added to the technology. With the passage of this scientist have investigated the complex mechanism of metal uptake processes of several plant species and adapted the possible strategies to optimize its capacity to be the better technology to solve the problem. In the presented chapter we have discussed about the available advances and adaptations, crucial challenges of the technology along with the future prospects for eliminating the loop holes of the technology to improve the reliability of the technology.

To minimize the pressure of growing demands of bioenergy crops and remediating polluted sites in ... more To minimize the pressure of growing demands of bioenergy crops and remediating polluted sites in a wide-range of environmental stressed conditions are some major issues and have increased interest worldwide to solve both the problems by using reed canary grass. Besides, this perennial grass has good potential to contribute a number of desirable attributes, such as improving water quality, limiting soil erosion, having lower nutrient requirements, and increasing the organic matter in the soil system to become adaptive in various agricultural practices. In this chapter, the characteristics of reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) with regard to its potential use as a viable candidate for phytoremediation of polluted sites with biofuel production potential are discussed. The biomass production of reed canary grass on a variety of derelict lands (i.e., marginal lands, degraded lands, contaminated sites, underutilized and neglected lands, etc.) is a potential offer to produce biofuel without reallocating land from food production systems, avoiding the socio-environmental conflicts linked with biofuel production. Therefore, the reed canary grass is a best asset for phytoremediation of contaminated lands with biofuel production on wide-ranging contaminated sites.

Now the tradition is no more vital, but it’s role is very significant to maintain the relation between the people. Prof. H.S. Srivastava Foundation for Science and Society, Lucknow and Prithvipur Abhyuday Samiti, Lucknow are collectively bringing this magazine to carry knowledge, tradition, experiments, successes, analysis and critics from people to people in the national language Hindi with its different sublanguages, global predominant communicating language English and few other languages that are mode of expression in different parts of India, simultaneously. We need your input, contribution and suggestion for this Endeavour.
The nature is mighty. It is mighty, because it has evolved through the ages. Several known and unknown forces, energies and material have been involved in it’s evolution. It has complex interaction, which make verity of differentiations between ecosystems, organisms and the societies. However, how the revegetation after farmland abandonment influences soil properties and herb‐layer biodiversity remains unclear. In the present study, we examined the variation in soil chemical and biological properties (soil microbial biomass, stock, and stoichiometry), herb‐layer diversity indices, and aboveground biomass, their relationships in a chronosequence of 2, 5, 7, 11, 16, and 35 years following revegetation of abandoned farmland in the central Himalaya, India. Results revealed that the diversity indices, biomass, and soil properties significantly changed over successional stages. The species in the plant community shifted from the forbs in earlier stages to grasses and sedges in later stages. Our results indicated that the soil microbial carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents and stocks increased along the chronosequence...

Topography-mediated light environment regulates intra-specific seasonal and diurnal patterns of photosynthetic plasticity and plant ecophysiological adaptation strategies

Due to substantial topographic variations in the Himalaya, incident solar radiation in the forest... more Due to substantial topographic variations in the Himalaya, incident solar radiation in the forest canopy is highly unequal. This results in significant environmental differences at finer scales and may lead to considerable differences in photosynthetic productivity in montane forests. Therefore, local-scale ecophysiological investigations, may be more effective and instructive than landscape-level inventories and models. We investigated leaf ecophysiological differences and related adaptations between two Quercus semecarpifolia forests in aspect-mediated, significantly varying light regimes in the same mountain catchment. Seasonal and diurnal rates of photosynthesis (A) were significantly higher in south aspect (S) than the north (N). Although temperature was a key contributor to seasonal fluctuations in photosynthetic physiology, photoperiod significantly determined intraspecific variations in seasonal and diurnal plasticity of leaf ecophysiological traits between the two topography-mediated light environments. The regression model for A as a function of stomatal conductivity (gsw) explained the critical role of gsw in triggering photosynthetic plasticity as an adaptive function against varying environmental stresses due to seasonal solar differences. We also examined, modifications in chlorophyll content between the two light regimes across seasons to determine the chlorophyll adaptation strategy. The N aspect had higher leaf chl a, b, and chl a + b and a lower chl-allocation ratio (a/b) than S, which helped to optimize the required light reception in the photoreaction centers for improved photosynthetic performance. The leaf light response curves for A and gsw were observed against varying incident photosynthetic photon flux densities (0–2000 mol.m2 s−1 PPFD) for both aspects. We found that the same species developed significantly distinct light response strategies and photosynthetic capacities in S than in N for the given magnitudes of PPFD. Such acquired ecophysiological adaptations owing to varying light environments may provide significant clues for understanding the impact of future climate change on Himalayan tree species.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menggali potensi bambu dengan teknik laminasi. Selama ini bambu dimanfaatkan sebagai material konstruksi pada bangunan dan berbagai macam furniture, akan tetapi bambu memiliki banyak potensi yang masih bisa digali, salah satunya adalah menjadi material konstruksi pada sarana bawa. Pada penelitian ini penulis melakukan eksplorasi bentuk bambu dengan teknik bending dan laminasi yang dimanfaatkan karakteristiknya sehingga dapat ditemukan potensi bambu laminasi yang cocok diterapkan untuk produk tas traveling. Semua riset dam eksplorasi mengenai analisis tersebut akan diangkat menjadi sebuah konsep dalam produk sarana bawa yang akan dirancang. Diharapkan melalui penelitian ini dapat dihadirkan nilai kebaruan desain pada tas travel bag melalui penggabungan material alam dan material buatan. Penelitian dilakukan sebagai acuan / sumber informasi /kajian teori / analisis data bagi proyek desain selanjutnya. Pada penelitian ini metode yang digunakan diawali dengan observasi,survey dan riset pada kegiatan traveling, baru kemudian dilakukan eksperimen penggunaan bambu sebagai kerangka.
