Hazard Notifications for Cyclists: Comparison of Awareness Message Modalities in a Mixed Reality Study

However, there is still potential for increased road safety in the future. We argue that by making assistance systems available to cyclists, accidents could be prevented. In this paper, we focus on potential accidents caused by vehicle doors opening in a cyclist's path of travel, which can lead to serious injuries to the cyclist. Using a mixed-methods approach, we explored how messages informing about a potentially opening door ahead are perceived and understood regarding usability and intuitiveness in a bicycle simulator study (N=24). We investigated how visual messages, visual messages and auditory icons, and visual and voice messages on a head-mounted device are subjectively perceived. We also assessed our participants' attitudes toward using such systems and mixed reality simulations for bicycle safety research in general. Our results show that participants preferred visual messages and auditory cues and found these types of notifications more enjoyable than visual messages alone. Furthermore, the results suggest that such a system would be used while cycling. Participants agreed that mixed reality simulation is suitable for testing/evaluating novel support systems and finding initial insights in the first step but confirmed that real-world testing on the road is mandatory nonetheless. • Human-centered computing → Mixed / augmented reality; User studies; User interface design.

Windshield displays are a technology with a promising potential for automated driving, as they are able to provide large content areas supporting drivers in non-driving related activities. As automated vehicles become more prevalent, designing interfaces that best fit all users, especi... more As automated vehicles become more prevalent, designing interfaces that best fit all users, especially ones in minority populations, is a pressing but difficult goal. System-driven adaptation is a commonly used approach as it is easier and created by experts but, has innate flaws. Customization, on the other hand, allows users to consciously alter the interface to appear and operate in a manner most suited to their needs and wants. However, various components of the interface have different constraints, capabilities, and requirements with the amount of customization appropriate. In this workshop, we will dissect an expansive taxonomy for customization and develop a series of levels in order to get the full benefits from customization, which in turn can help engineers and designers in creating more user-centered systems. Cooperative, intelligent transportation systems (C-ITSs) have capabilities far beyond what human ... more Cooperative, intelligent transportation systems (C-ITSs) have capabilities far beyond what human drivers can achieve. For instance, intelligent systems that plan the exact trajectories of vehicles could increase throughput at intersections, allowing vehicles to pass with high speed and without any need for traffic lights. It is imaginable that C-ITS will manage traffic in fully automated driving (FAD). However, the unpredictable behavior patterns of the automated vehicle (AV) are also likely to make the occupants feel uncomfortable. FAD systems operate based on a vast amount of information. As this information is potentially invisible to individuals, the question is if users trust FAD systems. We hypothesize that users experiencing such scenarios would demand system feedback to anticipate upcoming system decisions and maneuvers. Therefore, we evaluated five augmented reality (AR) user interface (UI) concepts aiming to increase system transparency in a user study (N = 30) in a driving simulation in virtual reality (VR). Our results support the assumption that feedback about the system state (in the form of route information) significantly increases trust in AVs. As trust is highly subjective, we propose to provide experience-based route visualization systems in FAD to meet individuals' needs. Performance and Acceptance Evaluation of a Driver Drowsiness Detection System based on Smart Wearables

Automated driving reduces the availability of these parameters. Techniques based on physiological signals seem to be a promising alternative. However, in a dynamic driving environment, only non-or minimal intrusive methods are accepted. In this work, a driver drowsiness detection system based on a smart wearable is proposed. A mobile application with an integrated machine learning classifier processes heart rate from a consumer-grade wearable. A simulator study (N=30) with two age groups (20-25, 65-70 years) was conducted to evaluate acceptance and performance of the system. Acceptance evaluation resulted in high acceptance in both age groups. Older participants showed higher attitudes and intentions towards using the system compared to younger participants. Overall detection accuracy of 82.72% was achieved. The proposed system offers new options for in-vehicle human-machine interfaces, especially for driver drowsiness detection in the lower levels of automated driving. Um diesen Fragen nachzugehen, wurde eine Feldstudie mit 24 (jeweils zwölf älteren und jüngeren) Teilnehmern durchgeführt, wobei ein automatisiertes Fahrzeug direkt mit einem von menschlicher Hand gesteuerten Gruppentaxi verglichen wurde. Benutzerakzeptanz und-erlebnis, Vertrauen sowie subjektives Zeitempfinden wurden sowohl vor als auch nach der Fahrt mit dem jeweiligen Transportmittel mit standardisierten Messverfahren und Interviews erfasst. Die Resultate zeigen, dass automatisierte Fahrzeuge in ähnlichem Ausmaß akzeptiert werden wie auch menschliche Fahrer, jedoch gerade jüngere Probanden aufgrund der geringeren Geschwindigkeit der neuen Technologie gegenüber noch skeptisch eingestellt sind. Für diese Zielgruppe wirkte sich jedoch eine Fahrt mit dem automatisierten Fahrzeug positiv auf das Vertrauen aus. Eine Berücksichtigung der gewonnenen Erkenntnisse ist für eine weitere Implementierung der Technologie zu empfehlen.

Following laws and provisions passed on the national and international level, the most relevant g... more Following laws and provisions passed on the national and international level, the most relevant goal of future traffic and vehicular interfaces is to increase road safety. To alleviate the cognitive load associated with the interaction with the variety of emerging information and assistance systems in the car, subliminal stimulation is assumed to be a promising technique. To assess the potential of subliminal cues that could be used as their interaction means in future vehicles, we have organized a workshop within the frame of the automotive user interfaces conference (AutoUI 2011) to discuss this topic in a group of experts. This paper summarizes the findings from that workshop and should give researchers a starting point for their own activities in the field by indicating sort of grand research challenges and most critical issues. In particular, the goal of this summary article is to make this challenging research field more 'tangible' for researchers working in a range of disciplines, such as engineering, neuroscience, computer science, and psychophysiology. While currently discussed in the automotive domain only, the principles, research questions, and findings could immediately (and easily) be transferred to and adopted in other research fields. Interaction based on subliminal techniques can have an impact on society at large, making significant contributions toward a more natural, convenient, and even relaxing future style of interaction with any complex systems.

Electric mobility is clean, quiet, efficient and offers a great opportunity to keep our environment healthy. High effort has been put into new technologies, materials and infrastructure. Though, little research has been done on invehicle information systems (IVIS) to fit the needs of electric vehicle (EV) drivers. We argue that electric vehicle information systems (EVIS) are required to communicate EV specific information to all passengers in a positive and understandable way. This will be a key factor towards a better acceptance of EVs. With this workshop, we want to continue to bring together researchers, designers and practitioners of this design space in order to define a list of Grand Challenges of EVIS and work towards a bright future of EVs.

In my PhD thesis i will propose a software framework with corresponding hardware to support the interaction between human and computer in an implicit (non invasive) way by measuring and processing biological signals (the intention is to detect emotional states and react on it) with the goal of controlling computing devices by this.

As a possible solution, we introduce the approach of intuitive driver-vehicle operation based on natural (hand) gestures. The goal of this promising type of interface is, to allow drivers to interact with the vehicle in "pleasure", hence in the background and without adding cognitive load to the otherwise demanding tasks. To show its potential we discuss in this position paper a systematic, step-oriented procedure for its application to control an email system while driving.

Research on vibrotactile navigation and guidance has been a topic of broad interest for the HCI c... more Research on vibrotactile navigation and guidance has been a topic of broad interest for the HCI community for quite a while. However, common to most of the presented approaches is a 'map-like' navigation to reach waypoints or targets in two-dimensional contexts. Motivated by the need to simplify and speed up searching tasks in maintenance, training or other everyday situations, a prototype for a three-dimensional guidance system, composed of a glove with integrated 6-DOF positioning sensor technology and vibrotactile actuators, was developed. In opposition to the formerly mentioned systems, the purpose of our "TactiGlove" system is to guide persons to point-shaped, maybe hidden locations in 3D space or annotated digital objects that have been lost. In this paper we present the implemented system in detail, focusing on hardware and software aspects as well as on the different developed tactile feedback models. System evaluation with a lab-based user study based on a Fitt's law experiment for traditional UIs revealed that guidance by the "TactiGlove" was intuitively understood by most of the volunteers, although the system performance varied a lot between the different feedback models. Preliminary results identified much room for improvements and motivates to pursue research on the "TactiGlove".

In particular, the goal of this summary article is to make this challenging research field more 'tangible' for researchers working in a range of disciplines, such as engineering, neuroscience, computer science, and psychophysiology. While currently discussed in the automotive domain only, the principles, research questions, and findings could immediately (and easily) be transferred to and adopted in other research fields. Interaction based on subliminal techniques can have an impact on society at large, making significant contributions toward a more natural, convenient, and even relaxing future style of interaction with any complex systems.

Electric mobility is clean, quiet, efficient and offers a great opportunity to keep our environment healthy. High effort has been put into new technologies, materials and infrastructure. Though, little research has been done on invehicle information systems (IVIS) to fit the needs of electric vehicle (EV) drivers. We argue that electric vehicle information systems (EVIS) are required to communicate EV specific information to all passengers in a positive and understandable way. This will be a key factor towards a better acceptance of EVs. With this workshop, we want to continue to bring together researchers, designers and practitioners of this design space in order to define a list of Grand Challenges of EVIS and work towards a bright future of EVs.

In my PhD thesis i will propose a software framework with corresponding hardware to support the interaction between human and computer in an implicit (non invasive) way by measuring and processing biological signals (the intention is to detect emotional states and react on it) with the goal of controlling computing devices by this.

Drivers' operating a car today are increasingly challenged and/or distracted by the multiplicity ... more Drivers' operating a car today are increasingly challenged and/or distracted by the multiplicity of information in and around the vehicle. As a possible solution, we introduce the approach of intuitive driver-vehicle operation based on natural (hand) gestures. The goal of this promising type of interface is, to allow drivers to interact with the vehicle in "pleasure", hence in the background and without adding cognitive load to the otherwise demanding tasks. To show its potential we discuss in this position paper a systematic, step-oriented procedure for its application to control an email system while driving.

Research on vibrotactile navigation and guidance has been a topic of broad interest for the HCI c... more Research on vibrotactile navigation and guidance has been a topic of broad interest for the HCI community for quite a while. However, common to most of the presented approaches is a 'map-like' navigation to reach waypoints or targets in two-dimensional contexts. Motivated by the need to simplify and speed up searching tasks in maintenance, training or other everyday situations, a prototype for a three-dimensional guidance system, composed of a glove with integrated 6-DOF positioning sensor technology and vibrotactile actuators, was developed. In opposition to the formerly mentioned systems, the purpose of our "TactiGlove" system is to guide persons to point-shaped, maybe hidden locations in 3D space or annotated digital objects that have been lost. In this paper we present the implemented system in detail, focusing on hardware and software aspects as well as on the different developed tactile feedback models. System evaluation with a lab-based user study based on a Fitt's law experiment for traditional UIs revealed that guidance by the "TactiGlove" was intuitively understood by most of the volunteers, although the system performance varied a lot between the different feedback models. Preliminary results identified much room for improvements and motivates to pursue research on the "TactiGlove".
