Fort National St Malo

A brief stop off to walk the dog after an overnight ferry journey this morning. The fort is closed in the winter but worth a look despite the chilly weather and windy conditions. The dog enjoyed it anyway!

Tour Vauban

A day trip to Camaret included a return to the Tour Vauban, which I last visited about fifteen years ago. It's an impressive coastal fort built to defend Camaret against the English in the late 1600's. This time I didn't go inside as we had the dog along for the trip but it was worth an hour and a bit drive nonetheless. 

43rd Wessex Division Memorial

Driving down the A303 to Plymouth today, so stopped off for some lunch in Mere. I'd been past this town hundreds of times but never thought of stopping, mainly because it's only an hour from home. The lunch was nice but even better, I discovered the memorial to the 43rd Wessex Division, which is located at the top of the castle overlooking the town. The actual castle was dismantled after the fifteenth century, no doubt to provide building stone for the locals, but the earthworks are still impressive. There was also a small memorial to the US Third Armoured Division which trained on Salisbury Plain before D Day.

A post Xmas lunch walk on the beach this afternoon, so I took the opportunity to check out a crew bunker that I hadn't looked over before, as well as a machine gun bunker close by covering the coast road. Both have been sealed up and fenced off so there was no way of looking inside, which is a pity but just as well. 

Brigade Models Fortifications

I ordered some of the excellent Brigade Models Small Scale Scenery resin fortifications the other day, to use with my 2mm English Civil War project. They match up perfectly with the Irregular Miniatures figure blocks, being roughly 1/1000th scale. My favourite is the model of Star Castle from St. Mary's on the Isles of Scilly, which is where I spent many family holidays back in the 1970's, staying in the police house as my uncle was the police sergeant there for several years.
