Christmas

Ah, the post-Christmas lull. Which really, starts at about 1pm on Christmas Day, when all the presents have been opened and Dad has disappeared to the pub and its just me, Mum and ridiculous Christmas TV. Did get to see quite a bit of my family this year though - cousins and their children and Grandma and aunties, so was actually quite nice to catch up with them. For once!

I also got some good things for Christmas (fluffy converse and jumpers and scarves and necklaces and socks), but already it's all been packed away into my room as if Christmas never happened! Except my scarves which are now on their new scarf stand!

At least I now just get a holiday filled with lying around (and The Hobbit which I REALLY enjoyed! I liked all the backstory and the plotting and Bilbo is my adventuring spirit animal - worried about handkerchiefs and missing his books, although I don't know that I would end up as badass as him :D) and a New Years trip to one of my bestest friends house and Internet reading and getting my PS3 on because Assassins Creed III is awesome :D

In other news:

New Years resolutions:

Get another job - one in publishing or in an epic, well paid independent bookshop. Most likely in Oxford/London. Because this is the year I am going to go after the job I want!

Move out of family house OMG OMG. I am beyond ready for independent living. As much as I love my parents, there is a reason adults leave the nest!

Keep up saving - including bumping up holiday saving so ComicCon can one day happen!

Complete JaNo! (Are you ready, clo? :D

Have saved up enough cash to have an iPad Mini this time next year.

Be open to dating someone. I'm not going to put 'get a boyfriend' or anything like that, but it's time to be open to stuff like that. If any boy can get past me angry resting face and dismissive stare. Which, is a good test, I think!

And on that bombshell, off I go to my friends house down south to celebrate New Years!

If you're from the UK and you believe in freedom of speech and an uncensored interenet, you really need to sign this petition. There are others floating about, but that particular one is the best way to ensure that your voice gets heard. It's hosted on the directgov website and addresses parliament directly. If it gets more than 100,000 signatures, it becomes eligible for discussion in the House of Commons.

Everyone's been getting so worked up over SOPA -- and rightly so -- that ACTA seems to have slipped under the radar. This is hugely problematic, because ACTA is a similar bill, but it has the potential to be far more damaging than SOPA ever could be.

Some people seem to have this misconception that ACTA is the 'European SOPA', but that simply isn't true. It's a global treaty, and it's already been signed by eight countries, including the US, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore. Europe votes on Thursday. If they vote 'no', the bill will have to be taken back to the drawing board and reformulated, which should buy us some time at the very least.

If you think this doesn't affect you, you're wrong. If ACTA passes, it could well signal the end of the internet as we know it, and that isn't an exaggeration. It's not just about watching movies and television online. If ACTA passes, sites like YouTube, Livejournal, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and even Google and Wikipedia could become impossible to maintain. ACTA would allow ISPs to monitor your net activity and cut off internet access for your entire household if one person is suspected of breaching copyright. Think Big Brother is Watching. I don't think I need to emphasise just how damaging it can be to be without internet access in this day and age, when we rely so heavily on technology.

It's not only bloggers and fandom that would be affected, either. Small businesses, independent film-makers and unsigned musicians who have previously found their niche online would also suffer hugely, and would be at risk of being bullied into submission by Hollywood and multinational corporations under accusations of copyright infringement. All those artists who found fame by uploading covers of songs to YouTube would never have had the opportunity to do so under ACTA, as those cover versions would be prohibited.

I know the internet has its problems, but to my mind it's the single greatest invention to come out of modern times, and it would be an absolute travesty if we were to lose that now. From a personal point of view, I can't even put into words how important this is to me. I've met some of my closest friends through the internet and online fandom, people whom I would likely never have met without it, and it's given me this amazing social support system. I don't want that to end here, and I want to preserve it for future generations so that they can have the same experience and opportunities I've been given through my online interactions.

I know that opinions on the seriousness of copyright infringement and online piracy vary wildly, but that isn't really the point. Internet giants such as Google are opposed to this bill, and it's pretty safe to say that they're not in favour of copyright infringment, as anyone who's ever had a fanvid taken down from YouTube will be painfully aware. Whatever your stance on copyright, this isn't the way to go about dealing with it. This is dangerous legislation that impeaches on some of our most basic human rights, such as the right to privacy and freedom of speech.

So if you're from the UK, please, please sign the petition. If you hail from elsewhere in the world, there may well be similar movements in your own country, but I think the most effective thing anybody can do right now is to keep talking about this. Talk about it on Livejournal, on Twitter, on Tumblr, on Facebook, and anywhere else you can think of. Make sure this issue is never far from people's minds. The internet is an amazingly powerful tool: let's utilise it while we still have the chance.

Please repost and spread the word :)

SAY NO TO ACTA!

Please consider reposting this, especially if you have a large proportion of UK flisties. And please consider spreading the word via other platforms: Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, your own personal network.

Yay!

Whoop Whoop! My entry came joint second in the latest thegameison_sh vote!

The prompt was 'Phantom Touch,' and I was pretty pleased with my entry. Very glad that other people enjoyed it as well!! Found out because clo text me at work, which left me in great mood for the rest of the working day, and the shine hasn't worn off yet!

Head over to the comm to check it out - and some other fabulous winners, of course!

Riots

Fucking hell.

The riots have now spread to Manchester. Which isn't exactly right next door to my house, but it's the city closest to me. I recognise the streets that are being smashed up, and the shops that are being set on fire. And I wish I could just tell these absolute dicks to fuck off and stop destroying the city they live in for no good reason.

All my friends who live in Manchester and London are safe for now, and I hope everyone on my flist is safe and out of harms way.

*hugs*

Writing

Just created a gdoc with a) all the many Sherlock prompts that have I caught my interest and b) the few stories which have grown into something approaching a fill. Hopefully having all of these in one place will make it easier to find them and work on them.

Now I just wish that someone would a) help me pick out what to write and bounce ideas around with me (I am dying to write a longer, plotty Sherlock story) and b) kick my ass into gear about finishing my wips. I am slowly plodding along with my orignal fiction (although trying to plan out what exactly the prison looks like is a PAIN), but my fic... is dying a death.

Ha, so, any takers?

Anyway, off to bed as I am going to the races tomorrow! Exciting, but an early morning after a couple of weeks of lying in :D

*yawn*

Am currently almost 14 hours into 26 hours of sport at work. And I'm only the receptionist! Please wish me luck - I am hoping to slip in a nap somewhere along the way!

Break up on Friday and then my summer can begin! :D

AAAAHHHHHHH!

Just had to kill a spider in the bathroom, in my pjs, that was SO FUCKING HUGE that it could barely climb up the wall because it's spindly little legs struggled with the wait.

WTF, now I get to be scared everytime I have to use the bathroom, YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW SCARED I WAS, IF IT HAD JUMPED FOR MY FACE IT WOULD HAVE PRETTY MUCH COVERED IT!

brb, shuddering FORVER!!

DAMN IT, NATURE, WE TALKED ABOUT THIS!! >:(

Grrr

I have finished my entry for thegameison_sh. . . And I think I hate it!

Or, well, no, I just think that despite the fact I have changed something, it doesn't make that much difference, therefore my story is just nothing special! Except for one line, which I love :D

I have an idea for another entry, so I'll give that a go this weekend. At least I'll have something to submit!

Discovered today that I know all the words to Tim Minchin's 'If I Didn't Have You.'

I am fairly proud of myself :D

My writing continued to plod along, as does my MA stuff- got some good feedback on my latest assessment, so now just an essay and dissertation and I'm done!

Nothing much else is going on with me - writing and working and MA and singing songs.

Could be worse!! Hope you are all well, my lovelies <3

Was just able to discern that the parents were watching Star Trek 2009 because I recognised the music from it through the wall.

Does that make me merely cool, or supercool?

Frankenstein Amazingness.

Just been to see Frankenstein. Benedict Cumberbatch played the Creature, and he was magnificent. Seriously, seriously magnificent. I am beyond glad that I got the opportunity to bring that character to life, even when he was so so good at it that I could barely even watch. The story was very much from the Creature's pov, and it was heartbreaking and inspiring, and I barely even blinked during those two hours. Incredible.

I am in awe of him, and his amazing talents, and really, all this has done is increase the likelihood that if I ever happen to meet Benedict Cumberbatch I am just going to jump on him/faint, because he is beyond incredible.

tl;dr OMG OMG BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH WAS THE CREATURE AND HE BROKE MY HEART AND HE WAS THE CREATURE AND THE SET WAS INCREDIBLE AND THE HEARTBREAK OMG, SUCH AN AMAZING VERSION OF FRANKENSTEIN, BUT CUUUUUMMMMMMBBBBBEEEEERRRRRRRBBBBBAAAAAATTTTCCCCCCHHHHHH! HEARTS, HEARTS EXPLODING FROM MY EYES <333333333333333333333

HAS ANYONE ELSE SEEN IT SO I CAN SQUEE WITH THEM???

Aw, that's terrific. Instead of writing Sherlock fic this summer, I wrote a Sherlock recap instead. LOL! So it was all on your shoulders. Good job! Can you link me me up so I can go read it?
