The first thing I did was finish importing a tree\/bush asset pack, which was actually kind of a pain because the models needed tweaking a fair amount in blender. Initially I set up a separate entity for each bush\/tree variant, but it was kind of a lot of work and made the entity browser in Trenchbroom messy."},{"title":"Weeknotes 2024: (24, 25,) 26\/52","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-26\/","pubDate":"Sun, 30 Jun 2024 19:25:45 +0100","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-26\/","description":"Wow it’s been three weeks since my last weeknote how embarassing. I was ill for the first one, but the second I have no excuse, I was just feeling too lazy to write. So for this week I’ll try and roughly cover what I did in the first two weeks too, I’ve probably forgotten a lot of what happened though.\nProgrammming\/dev I don’t think I did any programming in the first two weeks, but the third week I got inspired while watching Alex Hetherington work on the level design for their new game 3 Shots Left (they previously made Ballistic Zen which I love)."},{"title":"Weeknotes 2024: 23\/52","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-23\/","pubDate":"Sun, 09 Jun 2024 19:36:43 +0100","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-23\/","description":"Programming Didn’t do much programming this week, just felt too tired to use my brain much. One of my friends started messing with voxels in Unreal Engine, so I downloaded it (it took many hours) and got some basic chunking and meshing implemented. Obviously I’ve done a lot of voxel stuff before, so it wasn’t really about that for me. I just wanted to give the engine a try.\nWow look at all that lumen global illumination!"},{"title":"Weeknotes 2024: 22\/52","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-22\/","pubDate":"Mon, 03 Jun 2024 16:51:57 +0100","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-22\/","description":"Programming I worked on my Thief related site a bit this week. The site is for uploading and downloading custom resources for map making. In the past things have mostly been scattered around peoples personal sites or in forum posts. There was the “Thief Object Repository” previously, but it was super jank and hasn’t been around for a couple of years at this point. I actually worked on a version of this back in 2020 or so but it never reached a point where it was really useable, and I unfortunately don’t seem to have the codebase around anymore so I had to start from scratch."},{"title":"Weeknotes 2024: 21\/52","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-21\/","pubDate":"Sun, 26 May 2024 19:36:17 +0100","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-21\/","description":"Programming I haven’t really spent much any time on my existing projects this week. I’ve been feeling pretty drained after work recently so I decided to slow it down and just do some super low effort messing around with new things.\nGames engines are cool and even though I never actually make any games, I still like to try out new engines every now and then. This week I gave Comfy Engine a bit of a go."},{"title":"Weeknotes 2024: 20\/52","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-20\/","pubDate":"Sun, 19 May 2024 19:05:17 +0100","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-20\/","description":"Programming Last week I mentioned GPU timestamp writes as something to look into for getting accurate timings for benchmarks. This week I managed to get a basic usage of them implemented. Initially I tried using them from scratch myself, but after a while I came across the wgpu-profiler crate which made everything super simple once I got it set up. I couldn’t get it to work to begin with, but then I realised that the version of the crate I was using was for a newer version of wgpu and I needed to downgrade wgpu-profiler."},{"title":"Weeknotes 2024: 19\/52","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-19\/","pubDate":"Sun, 12 May 2024 17:10:25 +0100","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-19\/","description":"Programming I finally have the first voxels rendering, along with a basic keyboard controlled camera to fly around. I kept it simple and I’m just using signed distance functions in the compute shader to give me some basic shapes.\nThis is just a cube with a sphere subtracted from it. Colouring is just based on world coordinates.\nI’m still working on the architecture around the rendering, and making it easy to create add new render techniques and swap them in and out."},{"title":"Fitness Apps","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/fitness-apps\/","pubDate":"Fri, 10 May 2024 19:08:32 +0100","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/fitness-apps\/","description":"Currently I use Strava for tracking activities, Komoot for planning cycling routes, and the Bryton Active app for syncing routes from Komoot to my cycling computer, and syncing cycling sessions up to Strava. This works for now because I’m only walking and cycling, and I haven’t really been caring about the stats.\nOver the summer I want to start taking things a little more seriously. Felt like crap last week and couldn’t be bothered to write. I didn’t do a whole lot anyway (due to feeling like crap).\nI’ll start with what I’ve done most, reading! Since the last post I finished A Memory of Light and read New Spring so now I’m done with the Wheel of Time (ok there’s some short stories and history books but I cba). After that I went through the r\/fantasy bingo recommendations and started picking out some things to read."},{"title":"Weeknotes 2024: 15\/52","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-15\/","pubDate":"Mon, 15 Apr 2024 16:46:25 +0100","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-15\/","description":"This was a good week. I got some work done on my projects, played Minecraft, and went out for a meal with some friends. My niece was on holiday for a couple days which gave me a nice calm break, which I appreciated.\nThere’s still no visual changes to the voxel project, hopefully I’ll have something to show again soon. I made some minor progress in regards to decoupling the world manager and renderer."},{"title":"Weeknotes 2024: 14\/52","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-14\/","pubDate":"Mon, 08 Apr 2024 06:55:41 +0100","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-14\/","description":"As expected I’ll be moving to a full 5 days of work for the next 3 months. I need to start making better use of my mornings and evenings now I think. I get up at 6:00 with my dog, and the rest of my family isn’t up until about 7:45 so I have a fair amount of time to do things. A while back I tried using this time to work on custom levels for the Thief series, but it didn’t last very long."},{"title":"Weeknotes 2024: 13\/52","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-13\/","pubDate":"Mon, 01 Apr 2024 10:05:54 +0100","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-13\/","description":"I had another busy week, and I’ve realised that it makes more sense to me to do these weekly notes on Monday morning where I have more free time. Last week was a Monday, and today is a Monday, so it’ll likely be Mondays going forward.\nI got some more work done with my voxel project. I’ve refactored a good chunk of the renderer CPU side to be easier to understand and work with."},{"title":"Weeknotes 2024: 12\/52","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-12\/","pubDate":"Mon, 25 Mar 2024 09:26:23 +0000","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-12\/","description":"It’s only the second week and I’m already late posting. Though I guess I can post whenever so it’s not really late at all. It was my sister’s birthday yesterday, and also her daughters birthday party (my niece’s birthday is next week). Spending 2 hours at a trampaline park with kids is extremely exhausting and I just couldn’t be bothered to write last night.\nOn Monday I posted about my internet problems and fortunately we’re doing a little bit better on that front now."},{"title":"Internet problems","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/internet-problems\/","pubDate":"Mon, 18 Mar 2024 09:46:58 +0000","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/internet-problems\/","description":"I mentioned yesterday that I live on a farm, and it’s generally pretty nice. I get to wake up hearing the birds and chickens, I look out my window and see trees and a small lake with fish, ducks, and often a heron or two. There’s lots of cool birds of prey around. At the moment there’s a Barn Owl and two Red Kites (I think they’re super cool, I’ll try and get a picture one day), but I’ve seen a Merlin, Sparrowhawks (my favourite bird thanks to Le Guin), Buzzards, and plenty of Kestrels (did you know they’re also called windfuckers)."},{"title":"Weeknotes 2024: 11\/52","link":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-11\/","pubDate":"Sun, 17 Mar 2024 16:42:00 +0000","guid":"https:\/\/jayrude.dev\/blog\/weeknotes\/2024-11\/","description":"This is my first weekly note, and it feels pretty awkward writing about things I’ve done. I haven’t done a huge amount of writing in the past, but when I have it’s always been a thing.
