Advocates who want to be more realistic and effective will also find the course valuable, especially as a companion to Jarrett&#8217;s book <em>Human Transit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This course fills a critical gap in many people\u2019s professional training. <\/em>It offers a fun, hands-on way of learning what makes an effective transit network, and what those insights mean for all the related professions.<\/p>\n<h4>How Does it Work?<\/h4>\n<p>A critical piece is missing the training of most people in the city-building professionals. Few people get hands-on experience working with transit as a tool, understanding how to use this tool to build a transit network. Learning to think creatively with these tools is the essence of transit planning, and of transit-related planning of anything else. If you\u2019re going to interact with transit in any way \u2014 as a planner, a developer, an advocate, an elected official \u2014 you\u2019ll make better decisions if you\u2019ve played with network design a little, so that you have a feel for how the transit tool works. This course is designed to give you exactly that taste.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-902\" src=\"https:\/\/jarrettwalker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Course-in-NYC-2014-350x350.jpg\" alt=\"Participants gathered around a map, pointing at it, debating the design of routes.\" width=\"250\" height=\"299\" \/>We believe in teaching transit planning the way you\u2019d teach carpentry. A good carpentry class might involve a lecture about the structure of wood and how to not kill yourself with a saw, but after that, you\u2019ll only learn carpentry by doing it.<\/p>\n<p>The course is a built around a series of exercises where students work together to design transit networks for a fictional city, based on its geography and a set of cost limitations. The exercises let students learn the basic tools and materials by actually working with them to develop creative solutions to a series of planning problems. <em>You\u2019ll remember what you learn in this course because you\u2019ll have discovered it yourself, and formed your own insights about it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The two-day course covers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The basic tools: line, frequency, span, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Clarifying goals.<\/li>\n<li>Principles of good network structure.<\/li>\n<li>Network design techniques.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-927\" src=\"https:\/\/jarrettwalker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Promotional-course-image-3-650x488.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jarrettwalker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Promotional-course-image-3-650x488.jpg 650w, https:\/\/jarrettwalker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Promotional-course-image-3-1080x810.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/jarrettwalker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Promotional-course-image-3-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jarrettwalker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Promotional-course-image-3.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Network evaluation, including access analysis.<\/li>\n<li>Interaction of public transit and urban form.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed vs flexible transit.<\/li>\n<li>Role of fixed guideways in transit networks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can also do longer versions of the course, including more on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Guiding public conversations around network design.<\/li>\n<li>More advanced evaluation techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Integrating transit planning with key development policy issues: urban form, housing policy, parking policy, traffic engineering standards.<\/li>\n<li>Integrating transit and micromobility, including cycling, scooters etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The course is done in intensive format covering one or two consecutive days. <em>About 70% of class time is in fun, interactive exercises,<\/em> while most of the rest consists of group discussion based on the results of the interactive work.<\/p>\n<h3>What Graduates Have Said<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cJarrett Walker\u2019s two day transit network design class explores the intricacy of designing transit networks, touching on elements ranging from maximizing the utility of a strained, underfunded bus system to planning high capacity bus and rail lines.
