Due to the demographic change in most European countries, the proportion of elderly workers is increasing. It is expected that in the future organizations will experience difficulties in finding young workers and will have to rely more heavily on older (50plus) workers. Therefore, human resource management is called upon to find strategies for the successful integration of older employees.

In this workshop you will gain an overview of relevant theories (e.g. Lord´s leader categorization theory (1977), Byrne´s attraction similarity theory (1979)) and empirical findings on this topic and I will present an ongoing study from Germany to you. We will discuss potential mechanisms (e.g. tradition, stereotypes) and affected outcome variables (e.g. relationship quality, leadership effectiveness), asking “Why does leader age matter”.
Leadership and Ethical Behaviour in Organizations.

Leaders play a critical role in setting the tone for ethical behavior in organizations. In recent years, corporate scandals have received wide public attention, questioning not only the status of leaders as role-models but also the moral integrity of followers that may reproduce unethical acts. The aim of this seminar is to understand how leaders can influence and actively shape their followers’ ethical behavior.

Businesses and organizations have realized that their personnel need more than facts and figures or dos and don’ts about people from different cultures. Intercultural competency is now the term being used to describe the ability to work across cultures through an instilled understanding of cultures on a general level in terms of communication and working styles. This occurs in tandem with behavioral and attitudinal changes.
