dryiffsrevitalizingtailholetonic replied to your postdo “gamers” still exist as a coherent identity…

it’s hard to define “gamer” to me, though I guess the stereotypical “gamer” is of the xbox/playstation type, who are into multiplayer first person shooters and present as “bros” in normal life. Surely they still exist, right?

Someone really into games like World of Warcraft would be a gamer too, but would probably be pretty different to hang out with–“gamer” is…too vague to be useful, and yet I think we all know what is meant when someone complains about “gamer shit” re: hardware, so it must still have SOME meaning…

I think that’s right

I guess what I was objecting to was the general sense that 2010s FPS, MOBA, and battle royale gamers are a species of nerd, as 1990s gamers were

I have this inchoate sense that Doom (1993) and System Shock were games for nerds, but Doom (2016) and the BioShocks aren’t, and that that’s even more true for games like Overwatch and Fornite

I have this sense that you can’t tell a “gamer” apart from a similarly-situated non-”gamer” today, even though you could back in the 1990s – that a twenty-something male who plays League of Legends today isn’t significantly different from someone who doesn’t

and that the 2010s League player is closer to the bro than the nerd, both as a longitudinal matter and as a cross-sectional matter – that the League player is closer to the 90s bro than the 90s nerd and closer to the 10s bro than the 10s nerd

(not sure what that cashes out as, personality-wise – likes sports? heterosexual? extroverted? low neuroticism?)

I’m not sure if any of this is true or coherent, but it’s my personal sense of things

jadagul

I’ve said this before, but one of the single biggest culture shocks I’ve ever received was when I was talking to someone about five years younger than I was, and she said “Wait, you play video games? I’m surprised. You seem like way too much of a nerd to play video games. Isn’t that like a fratboy jock thing?”
