Back in late 2021,  I needed a simple way to modify Sennheiser Bodypack transmitters and receivers to use SMA antennas. I had been doing the mods for several years and didn’t like any of the solutions I had seen, but especially not those that required grinding an SMA connector or modifying the Bodypack. About six months later, I began making and selling the SMA Adapter for Sennheiser.

Since then, I’ve continued to design and make a variety of other things that I’ve needed, but couldn’t find. I then start using these in the field, making (literally) dozens of iterations as I work out various design shortcomings or flaws. (For the SMA Adapter, I made no less than 100 variants before I thought about selling them.)

I design products in Autodesk Fusion and print them on an Elegoo Mars Ultra 9K 3D Printer. Sometimes I’m able to immediately use the printed part in the field (the Boom-a-Round, Side Boom, and Sun Shade for 8-Series Mixer/Recorders). In other cases, I design the 3D printed part to work in conjunction with components from other manufacturers (the SMA Antennas, Switchcraft Low-Profile Connectors, Mic Viper). Lastly, I design some products to be made by molding polyurethane in a silicone mold (the SMA Adapter, The Loop).

Once I’m satisfied with how a product works for me, if it seems like it might have utility for others, then I’ll consider issues surrounding manufacturing, quality control, and pricing. This analysis frequently leads to several rounds of redesign and more prototyping, as I discover what can and can’t be easily manufactured by one person (with limited resources).
