Previous literature establishes that Hispanics, Blacks, and females are considered riskier than their non-minority and male counterparts, receiving more loan denials and higher loan costs. Lenders mitigate asymmetric information by monitoring or influencing riskier borrowers through the use of non-price loan factors such as collateral requirements. Data from the Federal Reserve's Survey of Small Business Finances is analyzed to determine whether lenders impose larger collateral requirements on minority and female small businesses as a way to monitor this group of borrowers. A Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition is used to demonstrate how variations in collateral requirements are influenced by identifying characteristics. Decomposition results show differences collateral requirements and much of the evidenced gap is attributed to differences in levels of banking competition in borrower markets, loan interest rates, and loan amounts.

These include water quantity and quality, air quality, coastal resources, wildlife, land use, and hazardous materials. The majority of these resources are of the transnational common pool resource type. Current or potential transnational environmental externalities will be difficult to resolve. International initiatives are needed to coordinate border development goals in order to deal more effectively with these environmental externalities. Hence, one of the most crucial steps towards an environmentally sustainable development of the U.S.-Mexico border region is to insure that the U.S.-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will address these issues. The U.S.-Mexico FTA provides the opportunity to shift from a basically reparative to a more anticipatory and preventive natural resource and environmental strategy.

Nevertheless, some ecosystems do not have efficient activity levels or are not well interconnected, preventing all stakeholders' total involvement or spillover (value creation and outcomes such as socioeconomic development, well-being, and happiness). The contribution of this work is to use a transdisciplinary spatial method (used in measuring the spatial concentration of airline traveling) to measure the vibrancy of an entrepreneurial ecosystem. The framework procures the measurement of vibrancy and its sustainability for value creation in turbulent environments. A vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem imbues regional development. A case will present a numerical comparison between the level of vibrancy between ecosystems and illustrations of its activity levels for the creation of networks and regional development.

Additionally, the study shows how to decompose the estimated red snapper recreation demand function into changes: (i) due to recreationists who were not taking recreational red snapper fishing trips but were induced to take a trip in response to changes in catch rates and (ii) due to recreationists already taking trips and responding to changes in catch rates. The decomposition allows us to also decompose the estimated elasticities and consumer surplus. The results indicate that an improvement in expected fishing quality will increase consumer surplus and that most of the increase is contributed by recreationists who initially do not take recreational red snapper fishing trips, but later take a positive number of trips. This finding has important policy implications for managing the red snapper fishery in the Gulf of Mexico.

Organisations that pursue both profit and non-profit objectives, thus maintaining a mix of market- and mission-oriented practices and beliefs for addressing social and ecological issues, are known as “social enterprises.” The present study examines the methods of identifying, evaluating, and exploiting the principal factors related to social entrepreneurial opportunities. For this purpose, a qualitative research process applying the Delphi technique was conducted. A Delphi sample of 25 experts from Spain and Latin America was included. This study contributes to building a framework of reference for academics and practitioners regarding the key factors influencing the different stages of the social entrepreneurial process. The empirical results of the study offer a testimony of the most significant, both contextual and individual, factor...

The statewide Texas Gulf Coast economic impacts were estimated using the statewide expenditure data for the entire Texas Gulf Coast collected for this study and the 1986 Texas Input-Output Model developed for this study. The results of this analysis indicated that the total output impact during 1986 amounted to $1.19 billion for the Texas Gulf Coast and $1.91 billion for the state. The results also show that 59% of these impacts resulted from fishing-related travel to this area.

The analytical model and estimation procedure are used to estimate the value of recreational red snapper fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. This recreational red snapper valuation is decomposed into its direct and indirect components. As expected, the value of recreational red snapper fishing using the joint revealed-stated preference model proposed in this analysis is bracketed on the upper limit by the value obtained using the contingent valuation method and on the lower limit by the travel cost method. The results also indicate that the joint model improves the precision of estimated recreational red snapper valuation.

We find that in Latin America banks using derivatives, compared to nonuser banks, are associated with riskier capital structures. Additionally, we find that onbalance sheet activities such as liquidity is not a substitute for derivatives and that derivatives are not being used to coordinate interest-rate risk and credit risk management strategies. These results identifying a derivative user bank as a weak capitalized bank, which does not seek to hedge unwanted risk, argue the need for any additional restrictions on derivatives activities. Latin American policy makers need to address the possible speculative behavior of banks in Latin America, otherwise they risk having an unstable and detrimental banking system.

We find little evidence that Latin American stock markets are responsive to these changes. Alternatively, we find that Mexico's stock market affects other Latin American stock markets but not vice-versa. We also find that the exchange rate of a Latin American country affects its own stock market, suggesting that currency risk is an important source of risk in Latin America. We conclude that the use of crosscountry macroeconomic variables is not very useful for forecasting Latin American stock market movements.
