Replying to myself in case anybody else encounters this issue: the solution (as is actually visible in the video I mentioned, I just didn't really grasp the difference this detail would make) is to *stand sideways* underneath the overhang, and then jump. For some reason you can jump up over an overhanging ledge sideways, but not head-on.
