Pile Integrity Test

SONIC INTERGRITY TESTING OF FOUNDATION PILES
“First Line Quality Control In Piling”
Introduction
‘The- instrument which is using by the Arab Center For Engineering Studies for
Pile integrity Testing is a Collector - Model Pile integrity Tester (PT
Collector). It isa precision instrument and analysis system for pile shaft
integrity testing by low-strain surface-impact methods. It is easily operated
and carried by one person to test many piles efficiently, and is backed by a
decade of development of Pile Integrity Testers by Pile Dynamics, Inc. (PDI)
The PDI Tester Collector is completely different in features particularly the
Program or software comparing to TNO instrument for pile integrity testing
‘The presentation of reflection caused by variations in the piles impedance is
different
Pile Preparation & Other Conditions
+f "The pile “head must be clean, accessible, sound and free from
standing water.
~~. °., Use a grinder or other tools as necessary to smooth uneven surfaces
and to. remove contaminated or loose materials where accelerometer
{s to be attached and where the pile is to be struck by the hammer.
~ "The concrete should in general be not less than § days old at the time
of testing.
- A drawing should be provided showing the pile reference numbers
and locations,
Description of the Method
The method involves striking a pile heed with a hammer and the hammer
impacts generates a stress wave in the pile which travels down the pile and
reflects from the pile toe or from imegularities of secticn in the pile shaft. The
waves arriving are picked up by the accelerometer pressed onto the top of the
pile, The signal is passed to the input of the instrument where it is amplifies
converted to digital form and processed in a digital computer. The typical
value of the propagated waves in concrete is 4000m/s and. the
approximate pile lengths are calculated using this velocity

‘The accelerometer must be firmly affixed to the pile top in order to measure
the high-frequently motion of that surface during impact and reflection. For
best results, the accelerometer should be bonded with thin layer to the pile
top by pliable wax as 2 bonding material or any other suitable adhesive
- bonding material
Interpretation
It should be clearly understood that the main purpose of this test (Pile
Integrity Test) is to locate piles with major defects. Minor defects could easily
missed (and may not be important anyway to the overall load carrying
Performance of the pile shaft as the soil resistance is usually the limiting
factor in the pile capacity)
Note that a defect (section reduction) along the shaft length generally has a
“positive” reflection (reflection of same sign as input velocity). If it is a local
defect (reduction in impedance like reduction in stiffness or reduced area), it
has a positive-negative cycle. Local bulbs (section increase) have a
negative-positive cycle. A record from a perfect pile shaft would have the
initiat impact (positive sign) followed by a flat (zero) response until a reflection
from the bottom is observed. In practice there is usually shaft friction that
shifts the velocity record negative after the initial impact and reduces the
Maghitiide of later reflections, For a stiff concrete pile in relatively weak soil,
the toe reflection will have the same sign (positive) as the velocity input, For
a pile with a fixed end (such as a rock socket), the toe reflection may be of the
opposite sign (negative) as the velocity input. Slow changes are usually due
to soll resistance effects and usually go negative (opposite sign of input). For
More understanding, refer to the attached figures.
Advantages
The main advantages of the method are:
- Defects such as cracks, soil inclusion, variation in pile diameter and
approximate pile length can be discovered at an early stage.
- Testing can be carried out on any accessible pile
- The method is quick and economical compared to other methods.
- The equipment is portable, can be easily oper

- Up to approximately 250 piles can be tested on a si

imitations
- The method does not give information about the bearing capacity of a
pile,
: Major defects show very clearly, but minor deficiencies, like local loss
Of cover to steel, or small inclusions, are not discovered.
~The approximate length can be determined, unless the pile is very
Jong, or the skin friction is very high.
The method has proven to be very useful as a first ine protection against
major faults.
