5. 3.30 pm
ANSWER: 75° [90 – ½ (30) = 90 – 15 = 75]
6. 10.30 am

10. Calculate the mass in grams of lithium metal that will be liberated when molten lithium chloride is
electrolyzed with 0.15 Faraday of charge . Li = 7.0
ANSWER: LiCl + 1F → Li + ½ Cl2
1F ≡ 1 mole Li = 7 g Li
Therefore, 0.15F = (0.15/1*7)g = 1.05g
11. Calculate the mass in grams of aluminium metal that will be liberated when molten alumina is
electrolyzed with 0.12 Faraday of charge. Al = 27
3
ANSWER: Al2O3 + 6F → 2Al + /2O2.

1
6F ≡ 2Al
0.12
Therefore mass of Al to be liberated by 0.12F = /6*2*27
= 1.08g of Al
3
12. Calculate the charge in Faraday required to liberate 4.48dm of chlorine gas at STP when
concentrated sodium chloride solution is electrolyzed using carbon electrodes.
ANSWER: At the anode:
2Cl- + 2F → Cl2 (22.4 dm3 at STP).
22.4 dm3 of Cl2 at STP ≡ 2F of charge
Therefore, 4.48 dm3 at STP = 4.48
/22.4*2F = 0.4F.
