1860-1864WORLD BANKNOTES:
FOREWORD
It looks like we have produced another massive catalogue, sorry!
In fact, the October programme is very busy once again. We are offering the outstanding David Saul collection of
Bermuda, two exceptional catalogues featuring the “Banknotes of Affica, the Lumumba collection” from Ibrahim
Salem’ and to cap it all off, more than 2000 lots from everywhere else in this general sale.
We have a lovely selection of notes from the late John Glynn, one of the ‘originals’ of the IBNS. To use a much
“overworked phrase (by me), itis a true collector's collection, There will be a further group from the Glynn collection
in our December sale. We have excellent groups of Egypt, South Africa and India which should attract significant
interest, as well as the Alan Cole collection of Romania, a much underrated series. There is a magnificent group of
archive material including some lovely South American items, which is a departure for us from the usual suspects. As
‘ever, we have interesting Middle East and Far East, although we will be keeping the choicest China and Hong Kong
notes for our annual Hong Kong auction in January 2014,
‘There are some individual highlights I would like to draw your attention to. There are two gorgeous East Affican
Currency Board specimens from 1920, the colours of which almost defy belief. An almost uncirculated pair of
consecutive Indian 2 rupec/8 annas really should interest any serious collector of India. Any Commonwealth
collectors need to take a look at the Falklands § shilling and £1 from the tum of the last century - extremely rare
notes, and both serial number A/T 000001! In the Egypt section we have a charming 0 piastres of 1899, and in the
John Glynn collection are most interesting groups of Danzig, Poland, United States and Military currency of al kinds,
T seem to have spent the year cataloguing, although it doesn’t seem so long ago T had to fight to get a few notes
included in a coin sale. Notes were never treated that scriously 30 years ago (yes T have been here that long), but how
things have changed. I would like to think that the Spink catalogues have helped expand this great hobby.
Enjoy the catalogue and hopefully one of two notes will catch your imagination and pocket!
Good luck,
Barnaby and Andrew.

JOHN GLYNN
John joined the International Bank Note Society (IBNS)
in 1962 not long after it was created and went to become
a stalwart of the society over the next 50 years
John was influential behind the scenes within the society as
well as holding numerous positions within the
organisation, including librarian, assistant treasurer,
director and first vice president. His contribution was
recognised in 2011 by the society
John was particularly interested in the Baltic States and.
Russia, and in prisoners of war, which led to a number of
his articles being published in a variety of journals.
Like most Americans, he was interested in his heritage
which Ied him - and his love of bank notes - in the
direction of the United States & Ireland
cis with some regret that John wasn’t able to pass on his passion to either of his two daughters and therefore upon
his passing, the collection that he had taken over 50 years to lovingly compile, would be put in the hands of Spink &
Son for other likeminded collectors to continue the story that each individual note carts,

Alllots in the John Glynn collection are located throughout the sale due to their diverse nature, and are denoted by
