Regular verbs
1) Si definiscono regolari i verbi che formano il past simple e il participio passato
aggiungendo alla forma base la desinenza -ed.
The regular verbs get the the past simple and the past participle by adding –ed to
the base form of the verb.

2) Le forme negative e interrogative del past simple si formano con l'ausiliare did. Il verbo
torna alla forma base, perchè il passato è già contenuto nell'ausiliare.
The negative and interrogative form need the auxiliary verb “did”. The main verb
goes back to the base form.

Variazioni ortografiche nell’aggiungere –ed/ orthographic changes adding -ed:

1) Si aggiunge solo -d ai verbi terminanti in –e/we add only –d to the verbs ending in
-e: love - loved ; charge - charged;

2) La -y finale preceduta da consonante diventa –i/the ending y coming after a

consonant changes in -i: study - studied ; cry - cried ;

3) La -y finale preceduta da vocale non varia/ The ending y coming after a vowel doen’t
change: play-played ; stay-stayed

4) I monosillabici che terminano con una sola consonante preceduta da una sola vocale
raddoppiano la consonante finale/ verbs of one syllable ending with one consonant
coming after one vowel double the the last consonant:
stop - stopped ; drop - dropped

5) Oltre ai monosillabici, raddoppiano l'ultima consonante anche alcuni bisillabici che

terminano con una sola consonante preceduta da una sola vocale/ also some verbs of two
syllables ending with one consonant coming after one vowel double the last
consonant:
- con l'accento sulla seconda sillaba/ with the stress on the second syllable: prefer-
preferred
- terminanti in –l/ending in -l: travel - travelled
- terminanti in -ic, che prendono la –k/ ending in –ic, double with -K: picnic-picnicked

Irregular verbs
1) I verbi irregolari inglesi sono quelli che invece di terminare in -ed hanno forme proprie al
past simple e al participio passato. Di questi verbi è quindi necessario conoscere le tre forme
del paradigma. The irregular verbs don’t have a regular past in –ed, instead they get
both their past simple and past participle in an irregular way. That’s the reason why
we must learn their paradigm by heart.

2) Il past simple dei verbi irregolari corrisponde alla seconda forma del paradigma ed è
uguale per tutte le persone. Soltanto il verbo essere fa eccezione, in quanto presenta la
forma was per la prima e terza persona singolare e were per le altre. The past simple
form is the same in all the persons, to be is the only exception since it has was for
the first and third person in singular and were for all the other persons.

3) Le forme negative e interrogative dei verbi irregolari si formano con did + il verbo alla
forma base, come per quelli regolari. The negative and interrogative form need the
auxiliary verb “did”. The main verb goes back to the base form.

La desinenza -ed è pronunciata/ pronunciation of -ed:

1) -id solo con i verbi che terminano con d o t. es/ -id when the verb ends in d or t:
started (startid)
2) -t con i verbi che terminano con consonante sorda/ -t when the verb ends in voiceless
consonant. (kiss, ask, stop, finish, watch) es: walked (walkt)
3) -d in tutti gli altri casi/ -d in all the other cases. es: lived (livd)

Si usa il Past Simple/We use the Past Simple:

• per esprimere un’azione che comincia e finisce in un determinato momento nel
passato. Chi parla potrebbe anche non menzionare il tempo ma sicuramente ce l’ha
chiaro in mente.
to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past.
The speaker may not mention the specific time, but he does have one specific time
in mind.
I drank tea yesterday night. Ieri sera ho bevuto tè.
Tom worked from 9 to 5 last week. Tom ha lavorato dalle 9 alle 5 la settimana scorsa.
She didn’t phone me yesterday. Lei non mi ha chiamato ieri.

• per enumerare una serie di azioni finite.

to list a series of completed actions in the past.
I got up early, had breakfast, walked to the beach, and rented a boat.
Mi sono alzato presto, ho fatto colazione, ho passeggiato sulla spiaggia e ho affittato una
barca.
I added flour, poured in some milk, and then added the eggs.
Ho aggiunto farina, ho versato del latte e poi ho aggiunto le uova.
 • con una durata nel tempo che inizia e finisce nel passato. La durata è spesso indicata
da espressioni come da tre giorni, da dieci minuti, tutto il giorno …
with a duration which starts and stops in the past. A duration is often shown by
expressions such as: for three days, for ten minutes, all day…
I studied in Spain for five years. Ho studiato in Spagna cinque anni
They worked in the garden all day. Hanno lavorato in giardino tutto il giorno

• per descrivere un’azione che facevamo abitualmente in passato oppure generalizzazioni

non più veritiere. Avrebbe lo stesso valore di used to/ero solito. Spesso lo troviamo
con espressioni come always, often, usually, never, when I was a child, when I was
younger, etc.
to describe a habit in the past or generalizations which are no longer true. It has
the same value as "used to." It is often followed by expressions such as: always,
often, usually, never, when I was a child, when I was younger, etc.
I lived in Spain when I was a child. Ho vissuto in Spagna da bambino.
He played the piano. Lui suonava il piano.
He never played football, he always played tennis. Non ha mai giocato a calico, ha giocato
sempre a tennis.
She didn’t love baseball before. A lei prima non piaceva il baseball.

Il Past Simple traduce/ The past Simple translates the following Italian tenses:
• Il passato remoto italiano,
• L’imperfetto indicativo,
• Il passato prossimo.

1. Il passato remoto italiano è sempre tradotto dal Past Simple. “Passato Remoto” is
always translated with the Past Simple.
Ieri Mark giocò a tennis. Yesterday Mark played tennis.

2. L’imperfetto indicativo, è tradotto con il Past Simple quando non ammette la forma
stava + gerundio. “Imperfetto indicativo” is translated with the Past Simple if
it doesn’t admit the form stava + gerundio.
Quando Mark era in vacanze, si alzava presto e non faceva colazione.
When Mark was in holiday, he got up late and didn’t have breakfast.

3. Il passato prossimo, è tradotto con il Past Simple se indica un’azione che si è svolta
nel passato e non ha più nessun rapporto con il presente. “Passato prossimo” is
translated with the Past Simple if it points out an action developped
completely in the past.
La settimana scorsa siamo andati al cinema.
Last week we went to the cinema.
