High-Performance Computing at Berkeley Lab

In recognition of the increasing importance of research computing across many disciplines, Berkeley Lab has made a significant investment in developing High-Performance Computing services to facilitate the use of computation and data to accomplish scientific research.

  • HPCS System Updates

  • Laboratory Research Computing

    The Laboratory Research Computing program provides Lawrencium, a 942-node (23,424 computational cores) Linux cluster to its researchers needing access to computation to facilitate scientific discovery. The system, which consists of shared nodes and PI-contributed Condo nodes is equipped with an infiniband interconnect and has access to a 3 PB parallel filesystem storage system. Large memory, GPU and Intel Phi Knight's Landing nodes are also available. Other services include a condo compute service that allows PIs to purchase compute equipment to add into the Lawrencium cluster, a storage condominium service that allows PIs to purchase storage shelves that can be hosted in our storage infrastructure,  and an Open OnDemand service which provides web portal access to Lawrencium.

  • MyLRC - Lawrencium Account Management System

    MyLRC is a newly launched web platform to automate the Lawrencium cluster account management, including user accounts, PCA, condo and recharge projects, billing reports, and project ID validation. The portal uses CILogon for user authentication. Lab PIs and researchers are able to submit and monitor account and project related requests on the portal, manage group access by adding or removing users from projects, check their PCA’s SU balance, view details on service units used by individual project members, and check job status.

  • Scientific Cluster Services

    We offer comprehensive Linux cluster support, including pre-purchase consulting, procurement assistance, installation, and ongoing support for PI-owned clusters. Our HPC User Services consultants can also help you to get your applications performing well. UC Berkeley PIs can also make use of our services through the very successful Berkeley Research Computing (BRC) program available through UC Berkeley Research IT. Altogether the group manages over 70,000 compute cores and over 3100 users across 532 research projects for the Lab and UC Berkeley.

  • UC Berkeley Research Computing

    In recognition of the increasing importance of research computing across many disciplines, UC Berkeley has made a significant investment in developing the BRC High Performance Computing service, as a way to grow and sustain high performance computing for UC Berkeley. This service, offering and supporting access to the Savio Institutional/Condo Cluster, is intended to provide Berkeley's campus researchers with state-of-the-art, professionally-administered computing systems and ancillary infrastructure. Beyond its central mission of meeting the campus's computational research needs, some auxiliary benefits of the cluster include improving competitiveness on grants which favor or require institutional resources, providing an incentive for recruitment and retention, and achieving significant economies of scale with centralized computing systems and data center facilities.
