In this paper, a pilot area has been selected and the renewable energy potential for this region ... more In this paper, a pilot area has been selected and the renewable energy potential for this region has been evaluated making energy cost analysis. The study evaluates the feasibility of utilizing solar and wind energy with hydrogen as storage to meet the electricity requirements of the pilot region in conjunction with the conventional grid based electricity. In order to simulate the operation of the system and to calculate the technical and economic parameters, micropower optimization program HOMER (NREL, US) has been used. HOMER requires some input values such as technological options, cost of components, resource compliance and the program ranges the feasible system configurations according to the net present cost (system cost) using these inputs. The pilot region where the renewable based energy will be used is determined to be Electrics& Electronics faculty, Istanbul Technical University.

Dynamic Economic Dispatch with Valve Point Effect by Using GA and PSO Algorithm

This paper presents Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique to sol... more This paper presents Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique to solve dynamic economic dispatch (DED) problem. The main purpose of DED is to minimize total cost of generation power to take care of the various load demand in each hour. DED problem solution also must provide individual inequality and equality constraints at the same time. The algorithms have been applied to two test system, taking into account transmission losses. The first of the selected systems is 3 unit test system and the second is 10 unit system considering the valve point effect. Simulation results applied on the test systems show that the two algorithms obtained optimal and reliable results compared to the other methods used in the literature.

This paper proposes an Enhanced Particle Swarm Optimization (EPSO) approach to the Unit Commitmen... more This paper proposes an Enhanced Particle Swarm Optimization (EPSO) approach to the Unit Commitment Problem (UCP). The Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (BPSO) algorithm for on/off decision and the Classical Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm for the economic load dispatch problem are enhanced to find the optimal solution and reduce the overall computation time. The proposed technique is tested on 10 to 100 unit systems with a 24-h scheduling horizon. The results of the EPSO on the benchmark datasets are comparable with the results of other heuristic approaches found in the literature. This preliminary experimental study shows that EPSO is suitable for the UCP and the promising results promote further study.

A development area in Turkey was selected and the renewable energy potential on the area was anal... more A development area in Turkey was selected and the renewable energy potential on the area was analysed during the study; then the analyses of this potential, together with network, was made in terms of cost in meeting the demands of electricity on the region. The HOMER (NREL, US) program was used to simulate the system operation and calculate technical economic parameters for each configuration. The program requires input values such as technology options, component costs and reconciliation of resources, and arranges applicable combinations by net cost for different system configurations, using all these facts/information. As the pilot area, on which the energy to be obtained from renewable energy sources shall be utilised, Bursa in Turkey was preferred.

The aim of this study is to minimize the fuel cost and ramping cost of thermal units by utilizing both hydro and thermal units optimally. In evolutionary programming, new generations are produced from randomly generated initial vector by Gauss and Cauchy mutations and they compete with parent vectors and each other. Better individuals are selected for the next generation. The new generation process lasts until either reach to defined iteration number or a minimum function value or the point where developed solutions are no longer different.

Duyarlılık faktörleri ile, farklı çalışma noktaları için tekrar bir güç akışı analizi yapmadan, iletim hatları ve diğer sistem elemanlarının parametreleri hakkında geniş bilgi edinilebilir. Bu durumda, iletim hattı kapasiteleri ve üretim gruplarının sınır değerleri hesaba katılarak bölgeler arası maksimum elektrik enerjisi alışverişinin sağlanması bir optimizasyon problemi olarak ele alınabilir. Bu çalışmada, güç iletim dağılım faktörü ve farklı optimizasyon yöntemleri kullanılarak, dört bölge, onbir bara ve onsekiz iletim hattndan oluşan güç sisteminde, üretim değerleri optimize edilerek, bölgeler arası elektrik enerjisi alışverişi maksimize edilmiştir.

Voltage variations so called flicker mainly brings negative effects human eye, but also it brings some malfunctions and misoperations to the sensitive electrical equipments. In order to provide proper corrective measures for flicker, the first step is precisely detection of flicker source. Therefore, this paper gives a review of flicker source detection methods based on IEC 61000-4-15 flickermeter and signal processing methods like Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Wavelet Transform (WT) and Hilbert-Huang Transform.

An attempt has been made to develop a generalized algorithm for distribution system planning. The distribution transformer station location and the size selection are evaluated together with the feeder route and size selection. The model used in the design includes the realistic rules that are derived from actual networks in Turkey. Power conservation, capacity, voltage and radiality are included in the model. The proposed algorithm has been implemented on the actual examples. The results have shown that GA methods are flexible and powerful search techniques for obtaining a better and a more realistic solution compared to classical optimization techniques.

In this paper, two metaheuristic methods, genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization, are ... more In this paper, two metaheuristic methods, genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization, are proposed to determine the optimal locations, sizes, and power factors of single and double distributed generation units. In line with the 2050 carbon neutral goal, the aim was to integrate renewable distributed energy sources such as photovoltaic panels and wind turbines into the distribution system with a high penetration level. In contrast to most studies based on constant loads and dispatchable generations, an application considering the seasonal uncertainties of generation and consumption was performed to minimize the annual energy losses and voltage deviations of the distribution network. In addition, dispatchable, controllable and fuel-based conventional resources were allocated to compare the contributions of renewable resources. These seasonal case studies with various constraints were applied to IEEE 33-bus radial distribution network. To verify the feasibility and robustness of the proposed algorithms, case studies for peak loads were created and compared with the literature studies. While all distributed generation sources were operated at both unity and optimum power factor in all case studies, zero power factor and leading power factor scenarios were examined for a peak load only. Photovoltaic applications without energy storage technologies have not been efficient because of the uneven daily distribution of solar irradiance, especially insufficient irradiation in the evening and excessive irradiation at noon. However, wind energy applications are more reliable and feasible, because the wind speed distribution is relatively more uniform than that of solar irradiation, both seasonally and daily. In all cases, operating distributed generation sources at the optimal power factor provided better results than those operating at unity power factor. Consequently, wind turbines operating at optimal power factors have been found to contribute better than photovoltaic systems, and are almost as good as conventional sources with controllable power output. While both proposed algorithms yielded better results than those in the literature, particle swarm optimization was better than genetic algorithm in terms of providing the best solution, faster convergence, and shorter running time. Due to the integration of different kind of distributed resources and loads with nonlinear charac... more Due to the integration of different kind of distributed resources and loads with nonlinear characteristics, the quality of electric power in smart grids needs to be monitored well. In addition to power quality disturbances like sag-swell, harmonics, and inter-harmonics, flicker is one of the critical power quality phenomenon seen nowadays. For flicker measurement, a flicker meter is defined in the IEC 61000-4-15. This meter has only a voltage signal input and it is not enough to interpret the contribution of the load and remaining power systems separately. So, further analyses are required for flicker evaluation. In this paper, new approaches for flicker evaluation are proposed using signal processing techniques and information theory. The real measurements taken by an iron and steel factory are processed using above mentioned techniques to evaluate flicker characteristics. The results prove that the application of information theory in smart grid measurements provides valuable information.
