Natural theology is a branch of philosophy that employs empirical and logical methods to gain ins... more Natural theology is a branch of philosophy that employs empirical and logical methods to gain insight into the nature of God and His attributes. The fundamental structure of natural theology is derived from the tenets of religion and the essential concerns of metaphysics, a branch of philosophy. The arguments for the existence of God represent a central aspect of religious discourse. Consequently, natural theology is situated at the nexus of religion and philosophy. The investigation of the nature of God is a pursuit that has been undertaken since the earliest periods of human history. Nevertheless, within the context of Western philosophy, its roots can be traced back to the ancient Greek tradition. In the last century, there has been a tendency to approach the Pre-Socratics with a certain degree of bias. These philosophers have been viewed in two distinct ways: either as evangelists of the prophetic path or as scientists whose focus was solely on nature and who made no theological claims. This paper examines the possibility of offering an alternative interpretation of their philosophical contributions from the perspective of natural theology. It is proposed that exploring the historical context could provide new insights into studying philosophy and religion. Scholars engaged in the field of the philosophy of religion and those specializing in the history of philosophy may gain new perspectives by tracing the footprints of natural theology within the surviving fragments of the Milesian school.

There are some misassumptions related to hereafter and the fate of the soul after departing the body in Judaism. Since the Hebrew Bible does not talk about the death and afterlife clearly, some average people and some scholars claim that there is nothing relevant to the hereafter. However, in this study I put the Hebrew Bible to conversation with ancient cult of the dead and Medieval Jewish philosophers Saadya Gaon and Yehuda Halevi to proof the existence of afterlife and immortality of the soul in Judaism; even though Judaism is defined as the religion of this world and present time by some Jews and described by some scholars as the religion that does not have an afterlife

Zira felsefeye sıfat olan bu din isimlerinin kullanımıyla kastedilenin, bu dinlerin ana metinleri çevresinde oluşan felsefe mi yoksa bu dinlerin etkisi altında şekillenen düşünce sistemleri içerisinde yapılan felsefe mi olduğu bir tartışma konusudur. 1 Esasen bir insan uğraşı olan felsefenin, böylesi sıfatlarla birlikte kullanılması onun dini bir zemine çekilerek tanrısal bir uğraş olduğu imasını da içerisinde barındırabilir. Ancak 'İslam'ın hakim olduğu coğrafyada ortaya konan felsefeye, İslam felsefesi 2 ; Hristiyan düşünce yapısının belirleyici olduğu yerlerde yapılan felsefeye ise Hristiyan felsefesi denir' tarzındaki bir açıklama da makul gözükebilir. Yahudi felsefesi söz konusu olduğunda bu tanımı belki biraz değiştirmek gerekebilir. Özellikle de Yahudiliğin tarihsel süreci yani Yahudiliğin bir diaspora tarihi ve düşünce sistemi olduğu göz önüne alındığında bu tanım, Yahudi düşünürler tarafından ortaya konan felsefe şeklinde değiştirilebilir. Yahudi düşüncesinin altın çağı, kuşkusuz on birinci ve on ikinci yüzyıllarda İspanya'da Müslümanların egemenliği altında yaşanmıştır. İslam hukuku açısından zimmi muamelesi gören Yahudiler, bu dönemde gerek siyaset gerek düşünce hayatı içerisinde önemli yerlerde bulunmuşlardır. Bu dönemde Yahudi felsefesi ve düşüncesi açısından önemli isimlerin kim olduğu sorusuna cevaben akla gelecek ilk isim Yahudilerin Rambam, Arapların ise İbn Meymun dedikleri Maimonides olacaktır. Ancak Yahudi felsefesinin, İslam egemenliği altında yaşadığı altın çağı, Rambam haricinde daha bir çok düşünürün yetiştiği bir dönemdir. Bu düşünürler arasında sayılacak önemli isimlerden bazıları İbn Yusuf el Fayyumî (942), Süleyman İbn Gabirol (1058), Musa İbn Ezra(1138), ve Yehuda Halevî(1141)'dir.

This study discusses the function of arguments for the existence of God in affirming theism, spec... more This study discusses the function of arguments for the existence of God in affirming theism, specifically using the teleological argument of Richard Swinburne (b. 1934- ). Swinburne constructs the temporal teleological argument, which is a contemporary form of it, as inductive, probabilistic evidence that explains the order in the universe with a holistic view in light of scientific developments. He argues that this argument contributes to philosophical theism, which is an explanatory hypothesis. Our dissertation defends the idea that the consistency and accuracy of philosophical theism as an explanatory hypothesis is not only due to the arguments in favor of theism but also for some other reasons that are necessary for them. To this end, the introduction presents a conceptual framework to facilitate the understanding of teleological arguments, and a review of the relevant literature is provided. In the first chapter, the classical teleological arguments of Paley and Tennant are discussed, which are important to trace the historical development of the argument. In addition, the classical objections of Hume, Kant, and Darwin, which continue to oppose the teleological argument today, were included. The second chapter sought an answer to the question of how Swinburne, who claimed to construct a contemporary and robust version of the argument despite all the objections, constructed the teleological argument. The third chapter evaluated the possibility of an alternative explanation other than theism for the conclusion of Swinburne's teleological argument and his view that "order in the universe can only be explained if there is a God," which is the main claim of his philosophical theism. This chapter has evaluated the function of the criteria and arguments necessary to confirm philosophical theism based on Swinburne's proposed personal explanation. Finally, an attempt is made to understand the position of philosophical theism, which is the explanatory hypothesis advanced by Swinburne in contemporary philosophy of religion, by considering the objections to it. As a result of this study, it was found that the hypothesis of philosophical theism put forward by Swinburne is a strong alternative explanation among the hypotheses used to explain many events and phenomena in the universe. It was also acknowledged that the arguments, particularly the teleological arguments, contribute to the consistency of theism and the confirmation of belief in the existence of God, but that more than these logical arguments are necessary to justify theism's assertion
