Călinescu's vision about politics and humanist urbanism in Romania, both in the interwar period, when Călinescu was a prominent member of the generation of intellectuals formed in Romania after 1918, and in the era of the Socialist régime, when he was one of the leaders promoting the reconstruction of the Romanian culture distorted by the official Communist ideology.

Brãtianu: marele om politic liberal ar fi fost, mai degrabã, un om de carte, un "istoric rãtãcit în politicã". I. G. Duca, prietenul care l-a cunoscut îndeaproape pe Ion I. C. Brãtianu, scrie cã acesta "era convins cã dacã ar fi fost liber sã urmeze imboldul sufletului sãu ar fi ales, fãrã o clipã de îndoialã, cariera de istoric. În concepþia lui intimã […] el se vedea în liniºtea bibliotecilor, descifrând manuscrise, colaþionând texte, dezgropând din colbul vremurilor rostul celor ce au fost ºi îmbogãþind istoria românismului prin cercetãri neobosite […]". De altfel, o vizitã la conacul familiei Brãtianu de la Florica aratã vizitatorului pasiunea pe care o avea Ionel Brãtianu pentru cãrþi, în general (deºi, din nefericire, biblioteca omului politic liberal s-a risipit în mod criminal în momentul naþionalizãrii proprietãþii familiei). Pasiunea pentru carte era mai veche în familia Brãtienilor, fiindcã o împãrtãºeau ºi cei din generaþia anterioarã, Ion C. Brãtianu ("Vizirul", unul dintre înfãptuitorii, alãturi de regele Carol I, ai Independenþei) sau fratele acestuia, Dumitru, cel care, student la Paris, colabora la publicaþiile franceze Le National ºi La Revue Independante. Familia Brãtianu pare a fi avut un simþ special al istoriei ºi al tradiþiilor, deºi a dat mai mulþi revoluþionari. În volumul Portrete ºi amintiri, Ionel Brãtianu trece în revistã marile figuri ale istoriei naþionale cu o artã a naraþiunii literare care nu poate lãsa indiferent pe niciun cititor. Sunt alãturate aici amintiri din familie, unele pline de culoare istoricã, de pildã relatarea unchiului Ghiþã Enescu, care, copil fiind, vedea "aruncat afarã pe zãpada înroºitã, trupul fãrã cap al lui Vodã [Constantin] Hangerli" (p. 285), altele evocând momente de cumpãnã istoricã dupã anul revoluþionar 1848, altele peisaje ale Þãrii Loviºtei ºi portrete ale unor personalitãþi ale istoriei naþionale. Reînvie sub ochii cititorului de astãzi figuri ilustre, care ies din paginile manualelor de istorie ºi devin personaje viu colorate de amintirea subiectivã a lui Ionel Brãtianu, slujitã de o limbã româneascã îngrijitã ºi expresivã. Portretul lui Eugeniu Carada, de pildã, este desenat cu o linie sigurã: "el fu un om de partid în înþelesul adevãrat ºi înalt al cuvântului" (p. 50). Gheorghe Panu, prietenul lui Eminescu de la Junimea, primeºte urmãtoarea apreciere: "Cu inteligenþa sa limpede, cu cultura sa vastã ºi precisã, el despica, pãtrundea ºi lãmurea chestiunile cele mai complexe ale vieþii obºteºti" (p. 56). Tatãl sãu, Ion C. Brãtianu, provoacã fiului urmãtoarea cugetare: "Din viaþa lui Ion Brãtianu trebuie sã învãþãm cã temeliile solide se pun cu dragoste, iar nu cu urã" (p. 57). Mihail Kogãlniceanu apare, din paginile semnate de Ion I. C. Brãtianu, ca fiind "Înzestrat cu însuºirile de cãpetenie ale bãrbatului de Stat, conºtiinþa adâncã a trecutului dezgropat din letopiseþe, vederea limpede a þelurilor, minte agerã ºi pãtrunzãtoare, simþ practic al realizãrilor, hotãrâre rapidã ºi îndeplinire energicã" (p. 65). O caldã evocare a figurii lui Spiru Haret îi prilejuieºte lui Ion I. C. Brãtianu o cugetare memorabilã: "Citeam mai deunãzi istoria Prusiei ºi mã întrebam cât de nebãgatã-n seamã trebuie sã parã lumina lumânãrii de seu la care munceau învãþãtorii prusieni, la începutul secolului. Când ne uitãm cum s-a dezvoltat ºi cât de uriaº s-a dezvoltat Statul german, numai atunci ne putem da seama ce luminã era aceea pe care o rãspândea învãþãtorul prusian" (p. 69).

Whether the period beginning with the years after the war is somehow easier to follow in Eliade's intellectual biography, the most discussed period and that gave way to numerous contradictory interpretations is, naturally, the '30s. In this sense, the present study makes a small inventory of some obscure moments, because this obscurity gave birth, most of the times, either to misunderstanding or, where there was an ill will, to the misrepresentation of his words. To have been kept silent was for Eliade (especially during the'50s) a form of intellectual survival and maybe survival per se. Now, we have the right to judge things in a more nuanced manner, without denying the facts, but also without interpreting them tendentiously and approximately. The study offers a broad perspective on the origins of the modern political ideas in the three pr... more The study offers a broad perspective on the origins of the modern political ideas in the three provinces that will agregate into the state of Romania in 19th and 20th centuries. In Moldavia and Valachia with the attempts of the boyars and other learned persons (mostly clerics) to import from the Western Europe new ideas about the state, the relations between state and churh etc., under the influence of Western Enlightenment. In Transylvania the same attempts to develop modern political ideas and a national political identity is summarized by the author in the context of the efforts of the majoritary Romanians to achieve equal political and civil rights which were denied to them by the ruler class under the domination of the Austrian Empire and, since 1867, by the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Într-o carte publicatã cu câþiva ani în urmã de academicianul Mircea Maliþa, (Homo fraudens, Bucu... more Într-o carte publicatã cu câþiva ani în urmã de academicianul Mircea Maliþa, (Homo fraudens, Bucuresti, Editura RAO, 2012), mi-a atras atenþia un pasaj, în care ilustrul diplomat român, ajuns astãzi la o vârstã venerabilã, fãrã însã ca trecerea anilor sã se poatã citi ºi în scrisul domniei sale, afirmã: "ªtii prea bine cã m-am distanþat de Machiavelli" (p. 63). Domnul Maliþa, nefiind doar diplomat, ci ºi autorul unor cãrþi foarte citite ºi comentate la vremea lor, ar fi putut, aºa cum Noica a publicat o Despãrþire de Goethe, sã scrie, eventual, o Despãrþire de Machiavelli, Secretarul florentin fiind, de altfel, cum se ºtie, rãspunzãtor în bunã mãsurã de politica externã a Florenþei în vremea lui Soderini, în primul deceniu al frãmântatului secol al XVI-lea. The study proposes a new reading of an intriguing character, a Florentine clerk who revolutionize... more The study proposes a new reading of an intriguing character, a Florentine clerk who revolutionized political culture and became the most problematic thinker of his times. This is the starting point from which the "Machiavellian revolution" is synthetically interpreted in four ways: a. A deep analysis of the conceptual sphere of the political elements and factors, which involves the examination of a series of fundamental concepts: power, political subject, interest, domination, hegemony, virtù etc.; b. a reinterpretation of the classical texts of political philosophy from a new perspective; c. a new perception on the political praxis, in terms of the possible strategies and of the distinction between the public and the private sphere and d. a reconstruction of the political theory in the spirit of the Renaissance anthropology. Therefore the study selects and presents the key cultural and theoretical aspects that support these observations and further them open to interpreta...

Most of the article refers to the first Romanian author which commented on the writings of the Florentine Secretary: the Phanariote ruler of Moldavia and Wallachia from the 18th century Nicolae Mavrocordat.

This is the starting point from which the “Machiavellian revolution” is synthetically interpreted in four ways: a.Adeep analysis of the conceptual sphere of the political elements and factors, which involves the examination of a series of fundamental concepts: power, political subject, interest, domination, hegemony, virtù etc.; b. a reinterpretation of the classical texts of political philosophy from a new perspective; c. a new perception on the political praxis, in terms of the possible strategies and of the distinction between the public and the private sphere and d. a reconstruction of the political theory in the spirit of the Renaissance anthropology.
