The e-Book Taboo-Transgression-Transcendence in Art & Science 2020 (505 pages) includes 50 chapters by 73 authors having as editors Dalila Honorato, Ingeborg Reichle, María Antonia González Valerio, and Andreas Giannakoulopoulos. The proceedings have been published in two parts: over three issues of the journal Technoetic Arts by Intellect and in this open-access publication by the Ionian University which, following the structure of the conference, has the graphic design of Ioanna Logaki.

“The fourth international “Taboo – Transgression – Transcendence in Art & Science” conference took place November 26–28, 2020, in Austria and online all over the world, hosted by the University of Applied Arts Vienna with the support of the Interactive Arts Lab of the Ionian University.
In November 2020 it was not just the pandemic that made the temperature drop in the atmosphere of Vienna, but also in its overall morale as we faced a brutal terror attack that claimed the lives of innocent victims—killing four people and injuring 23, seven with life-threatening injuries, including two students of the 15 University of Applied Arts Vienna. This terror act was a series of shootings that occurred on 2 November 2020 only a few hours before the city was due to enter a second lockdown light because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The question that was driving several presentations was to understand how and under what conditions such niche innovations, which seem to work successfully in hybrid and artistic contexts, can be condensed and upscaled to innovative transformation paths - stabilising new and more sustainable regimes. Is it possible to transfer diverse forms of transformative aesthetic literacy to other areas of our fragile societies in order to enhance new social practices and to promote positive change through futures literacy?”

Co-organized by the Research and Creation Group Arte+Ciencia – Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (MX), Arte Institute (USA), Cultivamos Cultura (PT) and the Department of Audio & Visual Arts - Ionian University (GR), Taboo - Transgression - Transcendence in Art & Science took place in 11-13 November 2018, hosted by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (as a part of the research project PAPIIT IG400718), and the Centro de Cultura Digital.
The ebook with the proceedings of the interdisciplinary conference Taboo-Transgression-Transcendence in Art & Science 2018 was published by the Ionian University - Department of Audio & Visual Arts in November 2019. This digital publication includes 20 contributions, in English, proposed and accepted by the scientific and artistic committee of TTT2018. Edited by Dalila Honorato, María Antonia González Valerio, Marta de Menezes and Andreas Giannakoulopoulos, this is the second and main core of the presentations of TTT2018. The conference proceedings for TTT2018 were published in two forms. The first part of the proceedings was published on the special issue vol. 16:3 of the Technoetic Arts journal, Intellect Publications, by Roy Ascott (editor-in-chief) and Dalila Honorato (guest-editor).

"Taboo-Transgression-Transcendence in Art & Science" started as a wish to explore three different... more "Taboo-Transgression-Transcendence in Art & Science" started as a wish to explore three different levels of conception and perception of the aesthetics and ethics in the field of art & science. During its maturing process the project developed towards the exploration of the line where art and science meet and therefore also the border where they divide. The three "T" initials condensate three ideas. First the forbidden, a convention that is so deeply rooted that few seem to be willing to break it. Second the defiance, the challenge to the convention itself either through the resistance to execute an order or through the direct action against the status quo. Third, the sublimation, the transition to an alternative state that overcomes the expected intermediary stages in linear conceptualization, here connected with the expansion of limits.

After the successful two-day symposium “Art and Interculturality in the Mediterranean Region” (20... more After the successful two-day symposium “Art and Interculturality in the Mediterranean Region” (2013), it was proposed, one year later, by the Department of Audio & Visual Arts of the Ionian University, the organization of a new two-day symposium entitled “Metamorphoses of Corporeality: Art-BodyTechnology”. In 2014 the open call for presentations of research theory and art creations took place with extraordinary response, a sign of the increasing interest in the interdisciplinary jeld of New Media Arts and the possibilities of its development in a Greek university located out of a major metropolitan center. As a whole, the contents of this digital publication rerect the four principles of the initial call for participation in the two-day symposium: the creative body, experiences of the body, artijcial corporealities and intercorporeal balances. The Symposium “Art and Interculturality in the Mediterranean Region: departing from antiquity, lo... more The Symposium “Art and Interculturality in the Mediterranean Region: departing from antiquity, looking towards the future” was the sixth to take place in the Department of Audio and Visual Arts of the Ionian University, aiming to discuss the special issues of New Media Art. It was proceeded by similar meetings in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. The 2013 meeting was, however, the first time to take place with an open invitation and coorganization by the Prefecture of the Ionian Isles. It is the first time that the proceedings of such a meeting are published in the framework of the Audiovisual Arts Festival as well. We believe it is necessary that this international dialogue between a theoretical and artistic approach should become accessible to the wider Greek community and we hope it will be continued.

In a continuous effort to develop critical rural art through the experimentation with curatorial ... more In a continuous effort to develop critical rural art through the experimentation with curatorial methodologies and documentation practices, Cultivamos Cultura, in the midst of a world pandemic, in 2020-2022 has led a project co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. This project is entitled Arc-hive and it brings together as partners five other institutions: KONTEJNER (Croatia), Bioart Society (Finland), Kersnikova Institute (Slovenia), Hangar (Spain) and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (Belgium). The consortium envisions to create an open source digital platform dedicated to the dissemination of qualitative and quantitative data related to contemporary art creation with emphasis on biomedia.

In April 2020, artists Isabel Burr Raty, Louise Mackenzie, Robertina Šebjanič and Karolina Żyniew... more In April 2020, artists Isabel Burr Raty, Louise Mackenzie, Robertina Šebjanič and Karolina Żyniewicz were invited by Dalila Honorato to develop research on the theme of “Staying in Touch: post-coronavirus art curating” as part of the collaborative digital art residency Braiding Friction. Working remotely across Slovenia, the UK, Poland, Belgium, Greece, USA and Portugal the group developed a speculative fiction in which art is the virus and art practitioners act as frontline workers. Braiding historical and contemporary art, architectural and bio-art practices, the group developed potential futures for post-pandemic art spaces, resulting in a fictional account of a series of art exhibitions that coincide with a pandemic event. The research was synthesised in the form of a pseudo-documentary premiered by the Creative Europe project BioFriction on 23rd July 2020.
This article presents the transcript of the pseudo-documentary “Staying in Touch” (Honorato, Mackenzie, Żyniewicz, Burr Raty, Šebjanič and Tavares 2020, 00:00:00 to 00:47:55), set in 2039: an ergodic narrative constructed as a self-ethnographic role-playing exercise by its contributors, where alter-egos Vess L, Arri Val, K-130, Soladite Carnelian and Anise Neuchâtel reflect on their curatorial practices before, during and after the pandemic. Whilst the narrative draws from many academic and contemporary influences, any references to historical events, real people or real locales are used fictitiously. Other names, characters, places or incidents are the product of the authors’ imagination, and any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. “Staying in Touch” was edited by Pavel Tavares with the support of Cultivamos Cultura and included cameo appearances by artists Marta de Menezes, Yann Marussich and Adam Zaretsky. At its core, this work is a case study of artistic research and the possibilities of interactive engagement during the COVID-19 lockdown.

In our indulgence to touch immortality, our fear of being forgotten, our unconvincingly altruisti... more In our indulgence to touch immortality, our fear of being forgotten, our unconvincingly altruistic embrace of selflove, our attempt to get rid of social and biological pressures or simply the uncaring lightness of an inadvertent encounter, we grip the reproductive practice Today's tales of the birds and the bees are a wholly different reproductive conversation as male fertilization, female ovulation and surrogate gestation have become more and more hacked to respond, not only to the reproductively challenged, but also to a demanding array of kinship design strategies. This panel entitled “Breeding sentience: queering lineage and voguing enhancement” focuses on the enriched experience of procreative manipulation through artistically creative forms of ART (assisted reproductive technology). As critical “reprotech” voices, the six panelists approach the topics of: (a) the unnatural selection of species, (b) the growth of human-animal hybrids, (c) biodiversity and neoeugenic engineering, (d) gender/genital sociocultural rebalance, (e) matchmaking based on genome sequencing, (f) the impact of preimplantation genetic screening, and (g) prenatal imaging. Our point is that art must be taken into account, to validate the checks and balances, at a time when the ethical limits and the multitude of potential human genetic manipulations are consistently challenged through the practice of formally deregulated principles

The aim of this paper is to investigate the ways biohackers are communicating with each other in ... more The aim of this paper is to investigate the ways biohackers are communicating with each other in social media and particularly in Twitter. Biohackers are referred as life scientists who combine biology and technology, along with the ethics of open data -that characterize hackers- and open source software. Their aim is to transcend their human body and to create a better version of themselves.
Social media and Twitter in particular are popular for giving the chance to users to update everyone with their thoughts, activities, opinions etc. The current study aims to examine the connections between biohacking groups in Twitter and check its potential to provide insights on the biohacking scene. Towards this goal, we collected tweets in a given time frame and we analyzed the interaction between users and determine whether the positions of the writers are positive or negative.
In order to collect the data, we used the help of R Language combined with the Twitter Search API. For determining the positive or negative attitude towards the topic we used sentimental and emotion analysis.
For our research we analyzed 6956 tweets. We used a real-time recording to collect the publicly available English tweets for approximately four weeks. For the selection of tweets we used topics that are popular among the biohacking community and that we believe can shed more light on the biohacker groups΄topic. The queries that we used for search, collection and analysis were: #biohacking, #DIYbio, #openscience and citizenscience.

Together with “Secret Passages - Lavrion” (1997) and “The Rejections of the Past” (1989), “Invisi... more Together with “Secret Passages - Lavrion” (1997) and “The Rejections of the Past” (1989), “Invisible Places / The Vast White” (2008) is the last piece of the trilogy Birth - Life – Death by the video artist Marianne Strapatsakis. For those who know her in person, it is clear that her personality has nothing to do with morbid and one even has sometimes the feeling that she lives everyday driven by a wild internal strength. Her own words are a clear explanation of the artist’s relation with the subject of death when she states, in a text from her individual exposition’s catalogue in Strasburg - France (2009): “I’m afraid of death only when I’m touched by beauty. On the other hand, when touched by beauty, no one cares about death”2. It is not the intention of this presentation to give further explanation on the reasons behind the creation of “Invisible Places / The Vast White” because that right belongs solely to the artist. This is a rejection on the possible meanings of this video art installation work from the point of view of ethics and aesthetics of death.

The ebook with the proceedings of the interdisciplinary conference Taboo-Transgression-Transcendence in Art & Science 2018 was published by the Ionian University - Department of Audio & Visual Arts in November 2019. This digital publication includes 20 contributions, in English, proposed and accepted by the scientific and artistic committee of TTT2018. Edited by Dalila Honorato, María Antonia González Valerio, Marta de Menezes and Andreas Giannakoulopoulos, this is the second and main core of the presentations of TTT2018. The conference proceedings for TTT2018 were published in two forms. With participants from six countries - Greece, France, Serbia, Israel, Austria and Portugal - the Symposium included both theoretical contributions and art presentations, with emphasis on the artistic expression brought by intercultural exchange and the use of new media.

In November 2020 it was not just the pandemic that made the temperature drop in the atmosphere of Vienna, but also in its overall morale as we faced a brutal terror attack that claimed the lives of innocent victims—killing four people and injuring 23, seven with life-threatening injuries, including two students of the 15 University of Applied Arts Vienna. This terror act was a series of shootings that occurred on 2 November 2020 only a few hours before the city was due to enter a second lockdown light because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The question that was driving several presentations was to understand how and under what conditions such niche innovations, which seem to work successfully in hybrid and artistic contexts, can be condensed and upscaled to innovative transformation paths - stabilising new and more sustainable regimes. Is it possible to transfer diverse forms of transformative aesthetic literacy to other areas of our fragile societies in order to enhance new social practices and to promote positive change through futures literacy?”

This article presents the transcript of the pseudo-documentary “Staying in Touch” (Honorato, Mackenzie, Żyniewicz, Burr Raty, Šebjanič and Tavares 2020, 00:00:00 to 00:47:55), set in 2039: an ergodic narrative constructed as a self-ethnographic role-playing exercise by its contributors, where alter-egos Vess L, Arri Val, K-130, Soladite Carnelian and Anise Neuchâtel reflect on their curatorial practices before, during and after the pandemic. Whilst the narrative draws from many academic and contemporary influences, any references to historical events, real people or real locales are used fictitiously. Other names, characters, places or incidents are the product of the authors’ imagination, and any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. “Staying in Touch” was edited by Pavel Tavares with the support of Cultivamos Cultura and included cameo appearances by artists Marta de Menezes, Yann Marussich and Adam Zaretsky. At its core, this work is a case study of artistic research and the possibilities of interactive engagement during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Social media and Twitter in particular are popular for giving the chance to users to update everyone with their thoughts, activities, opinions etc. The current study aims to examine the connections between biohacking groups in Twitter and check its potential to provide insights on the biohacking scene. Towards this goal, we collected tweets in a given time frame and we analyzed the interaction between users and determine whether the positions of the writers are positive or negative.
In order to collect the data, we used the help of R Language combined with the Twitter Search API. For determining the positive or negative attitude towards the topic we used sentimental and emotion analysis.
For our research we analyzed 6956 tweets. We used a real-time recording to collect the publicly available English tweets for approximately four weeks. For the selection of tweets we used topics that are popular among the biohacking community and that we believe can shed more light on the biohacker groups΄topic. The queries that we used for search, collection and analysis were: #biohacking, #DIYbio, #openscience and citizenscience.

This paper focuses on the methodology of character embodiment through the analysis of an artwork where the object has been intentionally removed and the operators bend their humanness to the characters, being forced to adopt an alternative kinetic language, to perform an aberrant ritual of movements.
Is there a different perception of things if someone lives in the desert, the mountain, the wood or the seaside, in the city or in the countryside? Does it make any difference the choice of method of transportation to cover distances? Whatever the object one finds along the way, whatever the road one chooses to connect the starting point with the location of destination, it contributes to shape one’s perception of reality. The place from which we originate, the place where we grew up and the place where we chose to live, leaves its mark daily whether we passively accept it or dynamically deny it. Transportation, roads and places are passages are doors into different paths in life. This chapter aims at to match societies and doors, to track dead end passages and generally open doors towards human development.
This essay intends to explore the interaction of the bullfight’s three participating elements, bullfighter - bull – audience, as well as their symbolic meaning and representation in other forms of art.
The history behind the origins of Shadow Plays is not clear but its geographic expansion unites continents into a common fact. Even though puppets have been frequently associated with younger ages, traditional plays in Shadow Puppetry are rather adult in content and this is perhaps one of the reasons why they attract different age groups. Melancholic feelings for a long passed happy childhood or the lack of better activities are also to be considered as good reasons to join the crowd. But while Shadow Plays might lack a full educational concept in its basis they do have a moral dimension presented in a more or less clear way. Performed among different cultures, Shadow Theater seems to have developed distinct regional characteristics concerning the main heart of the narrative, the combination of extra activities complementing the storytelling and the materials used in the construction of visual effects.
This paper intends to explore the role of the master puppeteer in this form of theatrical art as well as the use of its image in other sorts of discourses, the puppet's appeal towards the audience as an inanimate object owner of free-will and the influence of puppetry in other media
such as a catastrophe or a divine message in order to bring about human repentance, (b) as a being
escaping the physical borders of human dimension and (c) as a person responsible for a dreadful crime.
All of these definitions have in common the fact that they correspond to a type of being whose hybrid
form is somewhere between the human and the inhuman.
