Clinical Need
Embolization Treatment
Transcatheter embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that involves the delivery of embolic agents through blood vessels to block targeted vessels. This technique is widely used to treat vascular abnormalities, manage hypervascular tumors, address endoleaks, and reduce blood flow to benign tissues such as uterine fibroids or prostatic hyperplasia, which may otherwise cause adverse health effects. The applications of embolic agents continue to expand within the field of interventional radiology.
A key limitation of calibrated microspheres in transcatheter embolization procedures is their inability to fully occlude blood vessels due to their spherical shape. This incomplete embolization can lead to the formation of newly perfused vasculature, particularly when microspheres are used in the treatment of tumors.
