After being captured by a local king, they were sent to Quintus Metellus Celer, the proconsul of Cisalpine Gaul. The two ancient scholars believed this voyage proved the existence of a circumambient ocean. The story has been retold numerous times. A quick overview of the versions springing up in the 16th century reveals that the writers used this narrative to project their own ideas about the changing world around them. Following a suggestion by Frank E. Romer, I put forward the hypothesis that this encounter happened in the East, during Metellus Celer’s campaigns in Armenia as a general of Pompey, and it was later transposed by Nepos or other authors to a different chapter of Celer’s biography, that of his proconsulate in Cisalpine Gaul.
