EnViron (ENvironment for VIRtual Objects Navigation) is an application motivated by the demand to use Virtual Reality (VR) in large industrial engineer-ing models generated by CAD tools. EnViron’s main goal is to offer 3D visualization resources for CAD models with enough realism to be used for virtual pro-totyping, collaborative design review, change manage-ment systems and training, among other activities.

Particularly, most industrial engineers in the oil and gas industry use 3D geometric models, which they create using CAD systems to interact with the information systems. This is possible because modern CAD systems have evolved from drawing programs to collaborative design tools that combine geometric modelers with specialized tools for tasks such as engineering-document management, physical-plant documentation, and computeraided visualization. Important information that needs to be associated with CAD objects in these scenarios is the name of the objects, essential for tasks such as operation management, for instance. The current way of designing industrial plants relies on the communication among experts in the f... more The current way of designing industrial plants relies on the communication among experts in the field, and on tools that allow the simulation of the site. Virtual reality (VR) tools are used to visualize and interact with complex 3D environments in real time, and several engineering simulations employ VR to foresee the results of complex industrial operations. The research project described here presents a Service Oriented Architecture aimed to create a collaborative environment, called CEE (Collaborative Engineering Environment) that integrates VR techniques into a system where the execution of different sequences of engineering simulations is modeled as scientific workflows. The focus of this research is on the oil & gas industry, particularly offshore engineering, where the project of a new production unit is a lengthy, expensive and usually is conducted by different specialists who are geographically distributed. Among the integrated engineering simulations are those involving structural calculus, hydrodynamics, naval engineering with mooring systems, meteo-oceanography, and others. The main objective is to improve the users' interpretation capacity and skills while providing visualization tools for a better understanding of the results.
The HybridDesk is an immersive compact solution for visualization and interaction using low cost ... more The HybridDesk is an immersive compact solution for visualization and interaction using low cost products. Screens were organized in an small set where a user can interact in a virtual environment sat in front of a desk, and even a standard mouse, keyboard and monitor can be used . Different from a regular CAVE the head is tracked outside the display cube and with the support of a wiimote the interaction can be controlled with a good precision. Several tests were conducted until the best and cheapest combination of technologies was achieved. Home projectors and mirrors were used using a semiautomatic calibration and finally a simple video splitter was used to produce the video source for the four projectors installed.

In graph clustering methods, MinMax Cut tends to provide more balanced clusters as compared to Ra... more In graph clustering methods, MinMax Cut tends to provide more balanced clusters as compared to Ratio Cut and Normalized Cut. The traditional approach used spectral relaxation to solve the graph cut problem. The main disadvantage of this approach is that the obtained spectral solution has mixed signs, which could severely deviate from the true solution and have to resort to other clustering methods, such as K-means, to obtain final clusters. In this paper, we propose to apply additional nonnegative constraint into MinMax Cut graph clustering and introduce novel algorithms to optimize the new objective. With the explicit nonnegative constraint, our solutions are very close to the ideal class indicator matrix and can directly assign clusters to data points. We present efficient algorithms to solve the new problem with the nonnegative constraint rigorously. Experimental results show that our new algorithm always converges and significantly outperforms the traditional spectral relaxation approach on ratio cut and normalized cut.

The presented mechanism intends to be fast and easy to use to develop virtual reality applications based on the X3D format, enabling great flexibility for displays and interaction devices, allowing users to concentrate only on content creation. JINX provides support for nodes synchronization and resources sharing, from Framelock to Datalock. This paper describes the background of the decisions made and the problems that had to be overcome.

Neste trabalho, descrevemos a CAVERNA Digital, primeiro sistema desta natureza implantado na Amér... more Neste trabalho, descrevemos a CAVERNA Digital, primeiro sistema desta natureza implantado na América Latina, que consiste num sistema integrado de multiprojeção estereoscópica para aplicações de imersão completa em realidade virtual, composto por 5 faces de projeção (4 paredes e piso), sendo que cada face possui dimensão útil de 3m x 3m e suporte a resoluções superiores a 2000x2500 pixels. A geração, gerenciamento e multi-exibição de imagens da CAVERNA Digital é realizado por um multicomputador gráfico baseado em um aglomerado de computadores pessoais (PCs), denominado de POLUX. Ferramentas para o gerenciamento dos vários recursos disponíveis (áudio, comutação e resolução de vídeo, rastreamento de posição, iluminação e alocação de recursos computacionais) estão sendo integradas numa estação de controle. Atualmente, encontra-se em operação um protótipo do POLUX com 6 nós DualPentium III 1GHz.

This article intends to provide a panorama of the Brazilian Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Re... more This article intends to provide a panorama of the Brazilian Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality (SVR) based on the analysis of its last four editions (2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008). We had reviewed the 124 full papers published in these four editions of the symposium and had analyzed them according to different criteria. These criteria include research topics, technologies used, and research approaches. The goal of this document is to draw an accurate picture of the research in this area in Brazil and try to provide insights about trends, deficiencies, and opportunities that may help guiding future efforts of the Brazilian research community in virtual and augmented reality.
