North Africa possesses a rich archaeological heritage, which to a significant degree remains to b... more North Africa possesses a rich archaeological heritage, which to a significant degree remains to be investigated. This chapter reviews the current state of archaeo-geophysical research in Tunisia and Morocco, tracing its earliest development in the 1970s up to the present. While geophysical surveys were implemented in both countries within a fairly short amount of time, the uptake has been slow, increasing only in recent decades. Archaeo-geophysical research has also largely been focused on ancient and medieval contexts. From the perspective of rescue archaeology, many sites are threatened by increasing urbanisation and modern development. Geophysical survey offers a key tool to obtain fast, economical, and non-destructive observations on subsurface archaeological remains, allowing for targeted archaeological excavations in the future. Developing training programs in geophysics for archaeologists will help to promote the continuity and health of the field of archaeo-geophysics in both countries in the future.

The resumption of historical and archaeological research on the city of Agger/Sidi Amra and its t... more The resumption of historical and archaeological research on the city of Agger/Sidi Amra and its territory consists of gathering all the documentation available on the subject and initiating field investigations, likely to shed new light on the urban core, its monuments, the evolution of its topography as well as the question of territory and land use. This study therefore constitutes a preliminary report on the investigations which, carried out during 2020, made it possible, among other things, to obtain three-dimensional architectural documentation produced by laser scanner scanning of the main monuments of the site.

Gauckler initiated the first major inventory and research projects which marked the transition from the quest for art objects to rigorous scientific documentation. His project on historical monuments, and in particular the volume published on "pagan" temples, evidences this awareness. His personal studies on churches, culminating in a posthumous publication, marked the climax of a brilliant career as an archaeologist who laid the true foundations of the Department of Antiquities and Arts in Tunisia.

Le paysage archéologique côtier entre Caput Vada et Sullectum vient de s'enrichir par la découver... more Le paysage archéologique côtier entre Caput Vada et Sullectum vient de s'enrichir par la découverte d'un site archéologique antique inédit qui s'étend sur environ 16 hectares. L'exploitation moderne d'une grande sablière a permis de découvrir ce site dont l'étude de son occupation ne fut possible que grâce aux structures visible sur les coupes de la sablière, au décor architectonique assez abondant et à la céramique de surface qui permet de situer cette occupation des époques punique et romaine. Les quelques structures conservées, notamment les citernes et les murs en pisé, s'apparentent aux caractéristiques architecturales de la région dans l'antiquités.

Tunisie) nous a permis de renouveler nos connaissances sur la stemma d’une famille sénatoriale
connue aussi bien dans cette ville qu’à Bulla Regia, au nord-ouest de la Tunisie. L’étude onomastique des différents membres de cette famille nous a aussi amené à proposer des nouvelles
lectures de l’inscription de Bulla Regia et de mieux cerner les mécanismes qui orientaient le
choix des noms dans l’univers des notables sous le Haut-Empire romain.

The paper presents first results of a joint German–Tunisian research project in Carthage, Tunisia... more The paper presents first results of a joint German–Tunisian research project in Carthage, Tunisia. Archaeological fieldwork has been undertaken (preceded by a geophysical survey) in the southwestern quarter of the ancient city to study the architecture, chronology and urban context of the circus. The area has, unlike the rest of Carthage, not been targeted by excavations of the late nineteenth/early twentieth centuries and, also unlike the rest of Carthage, is mostly not overbuilt, although under pressure from neighbouring communities. The area is the last one allowing a large-scale diachronic urban study in which the circus and its impact on the quarter is in the centre. From our first results, we can date the beginning of the construction of the circus to the late first century AD, with interventions in the early third century and usage continuing into the sixth. We were able to define the extension of the northern cavea and to study the western part of the spina and identify the meta at this point. Information has been obtained on early Roman, pre-circus use of the area as well as data on the Punic phases. Sixth-and seventh-century levels are also well preserved.

Dhifi) À l'occasion des travaux publics entrepris sur la route reliant Carthage à Gammart, à environ 500 m à l'ouest des citernes de la Maalga (fig. 1), et à quelques mètres à l'est d'une tombe à fosse d'époque punique mise au jour lors des mêmes travaux 4 , deux séries parallèles de godets disposées horizontalement les unes sur les autres ont été perçues dans la paroi sud d'un tranché moderne 5 (fig. 2).
