Our Story

The Inn on Negley is a luxury 8-room inn located in Pittsburgh’s historic Shadyside neighborhood. It was built in 1884 by a chaplain and sold as a home to a prominent industrialist and his family. The family lived in the house for more than 70 years.

The home was among the earliest built in Shadyside. Now considered a central location, in the 1880’s the neighborhood’s isolation made it practical for wealthier families because they could afford to own a horse and carriage and employ a driver.

The home is unique for its unusual combination of Italianate and Victorian elements. The transitional design reflects both the popular-but-fading Italianate style, and elements of the emerging Queen Anne style. The home’s relatively simple, front gabled form was one of several shapes in which Italianate homes were often built.

The Inn’s perfect location, tucked away in the heart of Shadyside, allows guests to enjoy a walk to restaurants, shops and activities.

Elizabeth Sullivan purchased the Inn in 1997 and updated the decor of all of the rooms and suites through an extensive renovation.
