This research aims to assess the economic potential of the North Sumatra Province, the competitiv... more This research aims to assess the economic potential of the North Sumatra Province, the competitiveness of economic sectors, and determine theleading sectors in the North Sumatra Province in order to prioritize areas to compete in the national economy. This research uses secondary data time series GDP at constant prices Sumatra and Indonesia range ot time in 1996-2011 and analyzed using the method of Location Quotient (LQ), Growth Ratio analysis model (MRP), overlayanalysis, and shift share analysis. The Results of the overlay analysis (modification of analysis LQ and MRP), showing economic potential to be the leading sectors Sumatra there are two sectors, namely trade, hotel and restaurant sector, and transport and communication sector. However based on Shift share analysis, service sector that has the advantage/competitiveness in the economy of the North Sumatra Province. Based on the results of four analysts tools used, concluded that the sector basis in North Sumatra province, namely trade, hotels and restaurants, transport and communications sector, and services sector.
