Unlike semantics, which examines meaning that is conventional or "coded" in a given language, pragmatics studies how the transmission of meaning depends not only on structural and linguistic knowledge (e.g., grammar, lexicon, etc.) of the speaker and listener, but also on the context of the utterance, any pre-existing knowledge about those involved, the inferred intent of the speaker, and other factors. In this respect, pragmatics explains how language users are able to overcome apparent ambiguity, since meaning relies on the manner, place, time etc. of an utterance.

Analyzing and exploring a literature work is an interesting project. Identifying some theories wh... more Analyzing and exploring a literature work is an interesting project. Identifying some theories which can be applied to explore the story then leads us to the large information from the story and its connection to the world which will amaze us. It is important to comprehend the story and its intention. It is also important to know the background of the story including the biography of the writer. As in the story of King Solomon’s Mines, the author in fact highly influenced by his own experiences during his living in Africa. King Solomon however is the popular legend which was written in Old and New Testaments and also accurately written in the Holy Qur’an. It can be connected with the orientalism theory by Edward Said. Since the European author makes a story about African people.
Understanding the story closely we can definitely find the opposition of the modern Withes and the Primitive Blacks. So we can explore it with the theory of binary opposition by Claude Levi-Strauss. Then the evil king Twala can be deconstructed as he was designed by the wise woman Gagool with the theory of deconstruction by Jacques Derrida. Political Unconscious by Fredric Jameson can be used to explore the dominant Whites compared to the Blacks. And finally the character of Gagool represents the hegemony and can be explored by the theory of hegemony by Antonio Gramsci.
