Anthropology has four subfields, of which archaeology is one. Experimental archaeology is one of many subdivisions of archaeology. The name experimental archaeology itself delineates that some aspects of experimentation occur. The scientific method incorporates experiments to generate data to validate or refute a hypothesis. Experimental archaeology has evolved from its historical definition to what it is today. It has developed from simple experiments in archaeology to include interpretation of those results from experimentation.
Experimental Archaeology uses more controlled and likely reductive experiments in the lab as well as field experiments, which are less well controlled, using the scientific method, to produce data to inform us of the human experience, based on questions raised by the material culture left behind by humans. Experimental archaeology is making in the context of field experiments. Experimental archaeology is understanding. Experimental archaeology is not storytelling, in the sense of interpretation at museums.
