This study is about effects of tourism based activities on urban environment, carried in represen... more This study is about effects of tourism based activities on urban environment, carried in representative streets (Pangani and Bondeni) of Kati ward in Arusha City, Tanzania.The main objective was to assess effects of tourism based activities on urban environment. Specifically was aimed to investigate tourism related activities taking place in urban environment, examine effects of tourism based activities on urban environment, as well as investigate efforts taken by environmental stakeholders in reducing the negative effects of tourism as well as promoting positive once.Both primary and secondary data was obtained through different tools including interview, questionnaires, checklist, observation, focus group discussion as well as literature review on books, journals and electronic materials. Total sample were 99 household respondents plus 5 key informants, making total of 104 respondents. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS IBM version 20 to determine descriptive information. Findings observed that the quality of the environment, both natural and man-made, is essential to tourism, mostly of observed tourism based activities include accommodation, entertainment areas, restaurant and infrastructure. Many of these activities have adverse environmental effects. Many of these effects such as noise pollution, air pollution, solid waste and littering, eruption of disease are linked with the construction of general infrastructure such as roads and of tourism facilities, including resorts, hotels, restaurants, shops and curio shops. Finally it concluded that tourism based activities is essential for economic and city development. Its recommended potential improvements include voluntary efforts by industry sectors and government initiatives are required. 2
