Henna leaves contain several active components including phenols and flavonoids which act as antibacterial. The purpose of this study was to determine antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of henna leaves (Lowsonia inermis L.) against Staphyloccocus aureus. This research was conducted using descriptive method. In this study, ethanol extract of henna leaf was made by maceration method. Ethanol extract of henna leaves was tested against Staphylococcus aureus on Nutrient Agar (NA) medium using well diffusion method with 3 extract concentrations, namely 40%, 50% and 90%, tetracycline as positive control and aquadest as negative control with 3 repetitions each. The results of this study showed that inhibition zone diameter of henna leaves extract at a concentration of 40% was 21.29 mm, at a concentration of 50% was 23.1 mm and at a concentration of 90% was 24.4 mm, positive control was 27.93 mm and ne...

The way to deal with dry skin is to use a scrub or use a moisturizer such as lotion. One of the active substances contained in lotion preparations is antioxidant compounds. Avocado and aloe vera extracts have antioxidant activity. Avocado and aloe vera have moisturizing benefits. In this study, both types of extracts were formulated into lotion preparations. Avocado and aloe vera extracts were made by maceration method using 70% ethanol as solvent. The extract was formulated with 3 variations, namely the control formula (F0), the avocado extract formula with a concentration of 5% (FI), and aloe vera with a concentration of 10% (F II). The lotion was tested for physical properties including pH, homogeneity, stability, spreadability and irritation tests. The results showed that the lotion containing avocado and aloe vera extracts with storage for two weeks was stable. Does not change shape, smell, color, and do...

This study aims to determine the content of secondary metabolites from purple sweet potato leaves. This research was conducted at the Chemistry Laboratory, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic University of Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh with laboratory testing methods. Purple sweet potato leaves were extracted by maceration using 5 L 96% ethanol for 5 days and evaporated in a vacuum rotary evaporator to form a thick extract. Furthermore, phytochemical screening tests were carried out. The test results stated that purple sweet potato leaf extract contains Alkaloids (+++), Flavonoids (+), Tannins (+), Saponins (+), Terpenoids (+), and Steroids (+).

Diversity and antimicrobial activity of indigenous sponge-asccociated actinobacteria isolated from marine ecosystem in Indonesia have not much been explored. This work aimed to assess morphological and antibacterial activity of sponge-asccociated actinobacteria. The morphological characteristics were examined based on their color of aerial and substrate mycelia, and pigmentation, while antibacterial activities were assayed using antagonist technique. Selected actinobacterial isolate was identified using 16S rRNA gene. Various sponge-associated actinobacteria were successfully isolated from Hyrtios sp., Callyspongia sp., and Neofibularia sp. sponges. A total of 62 actinobacterial isolates were obtained, and each isolates showed variety of morphological characters, which could be seen in aerial mass color, substrat mass color, and pigmentation. Actinobacterial isolates were tested against human pathogenic bacteria, i.e. Staphylococcus aureus and Methicilline Resistant S. aureus, representing Gram-positive, and Escherichia coli EPEC K1-1 and Shigella dysenteriae, representing Gram-negative. Most of actinobacterial isolates had antimicrobial activities at least against one of pathogenic bacteria. High activity was shown by NOHa.2, isolated from Neofibularia, and HRHa.5 isolated from Hyrtios. The NOHa.2 showed the highest antimicrobial activity against S. dysenteriae, meanwhile, HRHa.5 showed antimicrobial activity against 3 of 4 tested bacterial pathogens. These data showed diversity of sponge-asccociated actinobacteria from marine ecosystem in Indonesia, and several of them have potency as source of antibacterial compounds.
