Die Gegenposition macht spätestens dann ihr Recht geltend, wenn sie die wichtige Frage aufwirft, was dieses "Jenseits" denn mit dem zu tun hat, was hier und heute geschieht. Im Text wird versucht, diese beiden Positionen anhand der Betrachtung einer bekannten Bemerkung aus der Heiligen Schrift miteinander zu vermitteln, also zu zeigen, wie das, was hier und heute geschieht, schon von sich aus auf jenes Andere verweist, und wie dieses wiederum nur verständlich wird vor dem Hintergrund des Hier und Jetzt.

At the beginning of On Certainty, as its second entry, Wittgenstein makes a remark according to which the fact that something appears to me, or to all of us, to be so and so does not entail the fact that it is so and so. This looks like a straightforward philosophical claim made by Wittgenstein. This claim fits into a family of views on the nature of the relation between appearance and reality which in turn is related to a family of views concerning the nature of belief, knowledge and certainty. However, it is common experience with Wittgenstein’s remarks that what appears to be a straightforward philosophical claim is actually no such thing. The essay follows that experience to a point where it becomes unclear what the remark about appearance and reality could possibly be if not a philosophical claim.

What they have in common is that they all deal with Wittgenstein's philosophy, and that they are throughout critical with regard to positions which are proposed in the literature on Wittgenstein. The first five essays try to give interpretations of particular sections of the Philosophical Investigations The sixth is a critique of one writer's interpretation of Wittgenstein's later philosophy. In the last essay the author tries to make Wittgenstein's later philosophy fruitful for one field of modern non-classical logic.

Iago is unconditionally evil 1 and, yet, he can be defended. 2 This is Richard Raatzsch's main claim in The Apologetics of Evil. The Case of Iago. Some people may grant that evil can be justified in certain circumstances, but it is hard to see how the kind of evil that qualifies as 'unconditional' could ever be defended. There is, however, a certain distinction that Raatzsch draws to palliate this perplexity, namely: that Iago can be defended, even though his actions cannot be justified. The line of argument for this and the previous claim develops in a rather unusual and attractive style where analogies abound and allow Raatzsch to introduce a number of subtle conceptual distinctions as well as to motivate his most relevant theses. Associated with this comes another stylistic aspect of the book, namely: that one may feel tempted to take literally a certain statement of his views only to learn a few pages later that it should be rephrased or qualified. On the one hand, this makes the reading of the book the more intriguing, but, on the other, it becomes a real challenge to specify the content of its fundamental claims in a way that might at once be reasonably clear and sufficiently nuanced. To meet this challenge is, needless to say, the main purpose of this review, even though it will be complemented with some critical remarks about two central claims in the essay, namely: (a) that Iago's motive for his actions taken as a whole is missing, and (b) that Iago is one of those people who keep their hearts attending on themselves. Im Zusammenhang mit einigen Eintragen auf den ublichen Listen der Eigenschaften Ehrbarer Kaufleut... more Im Zusammenhang mit einigen Eintragen auf den ublichen Listen der Eigenschaften Ehrbarer Kaufleute war oben von Eigenschaften die Rede, die unmittelbar nicht als sittliche erscheinen. Der nachste Schritt bestand dann darin, zu zeigen, inwiefern auch diese Eigenschaften sittlich relevant sein konnen. Den Hintergrund fur diese Uberlegung bildete die Tatsache, dass man, wenn man erlautern sollte, was sittliche Eigenschaften sind, sehr viel eher so etwas wie Ehrlichkeit und Verlasslichkeit nennen wurde als etwa die Beherrschung der Techniken der Doppelten Buchfuhrung. Allerdings zeigte dann die Erinnerung an den Kontext, in dem diese » technischen « Fahigkeiten von Bedeutung sind, dass man sich durchaus sittlichen Vorwurfen aussetzen kann, wenn man nicht uber diese Fahigkeiten verfugt. Das gilt etwa in dem Fall, in dem ein Kaufmann suggeriert, er beherrsche die Doppelte Buchfuhrung, wahrend er sie in Wirklichkeit nicht meistert.

Das im Vorangehenden gesammelte Material zur Sittlichkeit eines Ehrbaren Kaufmanns und die gelege... more Das im Vorangehenden gesammelte Material zur Sittlichkeit eines Ehrbaren Kaufmanns und die gelegentlichen direkten Ausfuhrungen dazu sollen nun zusammengefuhrt und, wo notig, erganzt werden. Dabei soll die Komplexitat der Ehrbarkeit Ehrbarer Kaufleute zumindest teilweise deutlich werden. Diese Komplexitat druckt unmittelbar die Vielfalt eines Teils dessen aus, was wir unter Sittlichkeit verstehen. Es handelt sich also bei den Uberlegungen zur Ehrbarkeit Ehrbarer Kaufleute nicht in dem Sinn um angewandte Ethik, dass es etwas gibt – die reine Ethik – welche dann auf einen besonderen Gegenstand – die Kaufmannschaft oder eben Manager – angewandt wird.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to reach more clarity regarding the notion of compliance, ... more Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to reach more clarity regarding the notion of compliance, in particular with regard to relation between this notion and the notion of integrity. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is a conceptual investigation, following a broadly understood Wittgensteinian approach. Findings – The main result is: there is no such thing as compliance in the full sense of that word without integrity. Compliance without integrity is a pathological case of compliance. Originality/value – So far, issues of compliance and integrity have either been treated as being essentially separate or as one coming in addition to the other one. If the paper’s argument is correct, this should no longer be accepted. The whole discussion should, instead, take another route.
