This article examines the boundary conditions for the formation of turnover intention. We propose... more This article examines the boundary conditions for the formation of turnover intention. We propose that the environment, both at the firm level and at the societal level, moderates the relationships among organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and turnover intention. Our findings show support for our model using professional employees from China, Jordan, Turkey, and the USA and reveal the similarities/differences across cultures. The results call for our attention in taking into consideration the environmental conditions (organizational, cultural, and economic) when studying antecedent factors of turnover intention. We also provide implications for researchers and practitioners in the human resource management (HRM) field and suggestions for giving attention to countries and regions that have been understudied.

The purpose of this research was to analyze the underlying mechanisms and contributing factors re... more The purpose of this research was to analyze the underlying mechanisms and contributing factors related to the seasonal dynamic of harmful algal blooms in a shallow eutrophic pond, Bangladesh during September 2005–July 2006. Two conspicuous events were noted simultaneously throughout the study period: high concentration of phosphate–phosphorus (>3.03; SD 1.29 mg l − 1) and permanent cyanobacterial blooms {>3,981.88 × 103 cells l − 1 (SD 508.73)}. Cyanobacterial blooms were characterized by three abundance phases, each of which was associated with different ecological processes. High nitrate–nitrogen (>2.35; SD 0.83 mg l − 1), for example, was associated with high cyanobacterial abundance, while low nitrate–nitrogen (0.36; SD 0.2 mg l − 1) was recorded during moderate abundance phase. Extremely low NO3–N/PO4–P ratio (>3.55, SD 2.31) was recorded, and all blooming taxa were negatively correlated with this ratio. Cyanobacterial blooms were positively correlated with temperature (r = 0.345) and pH (0.833; p = 0.05) and negatively correlated with transparency (r = − 0.956; p = 0.01). Although Anabaena showed similar relationship with water quality parameters as cyanobacteria, the co-dominant Microcystis exhibited negative relationship with temperature (r = − 0.386) and nitrate–nitrogen (r = − 0.172). This was attributed to excessive growth of Anabaena that suppressed Microcystis’s growth. Planktothrix was the third most dominant taxa, while Euglena was regarded as opportunistic.

The authors review Eastern and Western conceptions of spirituality, explicate the spirituality co... more The authors review Eastern and Western conceptions of spirituality, explicate the spirituality construct and differentiate it from religiosity, propose strategies for achieving ecumenicity and transcultural applicability, and suggest innovative techniques for measuring spirituality and spiritual emptiness. The essential attributes of ecumenical spirituality are that it (a) is concerned with existential or transcendent questions; (b) belongs to the domain of cardinal values underlying all aspects of life; and (c) is self-reflective, and hence metacognitive, in nature. The paths to spirituality are many and are grounded in different values and beliefs across philosophical-religious traditions. However, commonalities may be extracted at a high level of abstraction and with maximal inclusiveness. Thus, the goal of ecumenicity, and hence transcultural applicability, is attainable.
Goal: There are various views on variables that influence quality of life, such as meaning in lif... more Goal: There are various views on variables that influence quality of life, such as meaning in life, self-efficacy, and body image (including body area satisfaction, health evaluation, and appearance evaluation), in menopausal women. This study looked at the relationships among these variables both in terms of their codetermination and intensity of relationship to quality of life. Methods: The research study included menopausal women (45–55 years old) who lived in the city of Tehran and had at least a high school education. The sample consisted of 349 women selected at random from the attendees of cultural centers in the city of Tehran during June 2009–December 2009. Each participant completed four questionnaires, including a questionnaire on meaning in life [Salehi, M. (1994). Evaluating the issue of adolescents and the youth from the view of humanistic psychologists (Psychology PhD dissertation). Islamic Azad University, Research and Sciences Campus, Tehran.], general self-efficacy, multidimensional relation of self and body, and quality of life (sf-36). Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the relationships among variables. Path analysis was used to study the direct and indirect effects of variables as cause. A primary hypothetical model was developed that included the expected relationships among the variables. Confirmation or rejection of the expected relationships in the model was determined after executing the questionnaires and scoring the data. Results: The model fitness was analyzed using various methods. Results showed that there is a significant direct relationship between quality of life and meaning in life, self-efficacy, body area satisfaction, and health evaluation. In addition, the model predicted 33% of quality of life variance in menopausal women. The best predictors were body area satisfaction, health evaluation, and self-efficacy. Step-by-step regression analysis confirmed the results. Conclusion: Based on our results, there is a direct and meaningful relationship between the independent variables of this study and the quality of life. Therefore, in order to improve the quality of life in menopausal women, one or all of these variables needs to be improved.

Dignity seems to be something that virtually all people want. It is a seminal expression of the h... more Dignity seems to be something that virtually all people want. It is a seminal expression of the human experience that gains authority through the convergent demands of people worldwide. Even so, the human dignity concept is in unhelpful disarray. Dignity is variously viewed as an antecedent, a consequence, a value, a principle, and an experience, from philosophical, legal, pragmatic, psychological, behavioral, and cultural perspectives. We ask which if any of these human dignity concepts will likely serve our global common interests best, as both common ground and policy diagnostic? We examine four broad themes: dignity as (1) a metaphysical justification for human rights and duties, (2) virtuous comportment or behavior, (3) a perspective of “other,” and (4) a subjective experience of the individual, contingent on a broad and equitable sharing of values. We recommend viewing dignity as a commonwealth of individually assessed well-being, shaped by relationships with others, affected by the physical world, and framed in terms of values. Viewed this way, the idea of dignity accommodates the priorities of both individualistic and communitarian cultures. Conceiving of human dignity as a commonwealth of subjectively experienced value production and enjoyment has many practical policy implications.
Background and aims: The article aims to provoke new pathways within arts and health research tha... more Background and aims: The article aims to provoke new pathways within arts and health research that engage with the spatialities of arts-based interventions for building social and emotional well-being. We adopt an understanding of social and emotional well-being as a situated and relational effect rather than an individually acquired attribute. Methods: A social scientist and a choreographer both accompanied a mask-making workshop for exploring identity and body language with children aged 5 and 6 at a primary school in the North of England. Results: The collaboration generated an alternative emphasis on movement, rather than behaviour, as the focus of managing spatialities. Conclusions: The arts practitioner has to facilitate a balance of movements that, within the intended practices of the session, can be categorised as controlled, uncontrolled and improvised. This attention to movement enables a versatile conceptualisation of social and emotional well-being that is still situated and relational but also expressive of habituation and improvisation.
