In the early part of his book on Freud, Paul Ricoeur made a distinction between two types of inte... more In the early part of his book on Freud, Paul Ricoeur made a distinction between two types of interpretation of religion, which he called "the hermeneutics of recollection" and the "hermeneutics of suspicion"(Ricoeur ,1970). The former is sympathetic to religion. It assumes that religious consciousness is in touch with something real, and therefore contains some message that can be retrieved or "recollected ". By contrast, the hermeneutics of suspicion assumes that religious consciousness is bewitched by an illusion, so that the aim of interpretation is not to retrieve, but to explain away. Ricoeur famously called Freud "a master of suspicion". Patrick Casement inhabits the charitable mode, more sensitive to the symbolic and indirect language of religion, so belongs to the camp of the hermeneutics of recollection. Credo? is not a dense academic tome, but a brief, and honest account of his own experience of struggling with, and living through, a deep personal engagement with psychoanalysis and religion. He graduated in anthropology and theology at Cambridge University in 1959 and for some time felt drawn to the priesthood. This aim was engulfed by a personal crisis in his twenties and his huge disillusionment by the Church's insensitive response to it. (See p4-6). Four years later, a different sort of earthquake, not personal but collective, occurred within the Anglican Church with John Robinson's publication of Honest to God (Robinson ,1963)

As mental health care services move increasingly into the community with staff working in more is... more As mental health care services move increasingly into the community with staff working in more isolated settings, violence against staff is becoming an increasing health and safety issue. Education and training of staff to cope with potentially violent situations is a priority, equally important is the design and physical layout of the room in which potentially violent patients are seen. This audit looked at the safety features present in consulting rooms used daily, for interviewing patients, by mental health professionals. The study identified rooms which were judged unsuitable for interviewing potentially aggressive patients in, and as a result, several recommendations for safety improvements to these rooms were made.

Book Reviews wet-nursing in England appears to be in the seventeenth century when the urban growt... more Book Reviews wet-nursing in England appears to be in the seventeenth century when the urban growth of London in particular presented mothers with similar problems regarding their infants. Evidence for bureaucratic intervention, however, is lacking in England. The conclusion of the author that economic pressure was the predominant cause in the rise and decline of wet-nursing is convincing. The sheer intensity of the business supports the theory that mothers, often poorly fed, sold their milk and were often ruthlessly exploited by middlemen and some female meneuses. It is to be hoped that this excellent book will encourage further research into the field of conflict between maternal instincts and economic necessity.

Summary The historiography of the ‘dark age’ of biochemistry between 1910–1930 is examined. The b... more Summary The historiography of the ‘dark age’ of biochemistry between 1910–1930 is examined. The biochemistry of the period is located within a larger contemporary debate on the interrelationship between structure and function on a submicroscopic level. It is suggested that biocolloid science was an understandable part of the historical development of biochemistry, representing a conceptual bridge between the cell biology of the late nineteenth century, and the era of structural macromolecular studies of proteins that began after 1930.

Rothschuh remarked in his History oj Physiology that when Frederick Gowland Hopkins (1861—1947) went to Cambridge to teach physiological chemistry in 1898, ‘there were no true biochemists [in England]’ (1). That statement poses questions both about the nature of a true biochemistry and about the scope of biography and its place in the history of biochemistry. While there has been for some time an awareness of the importance of Hopkins’s contribution to the emergence of biochemistry in this country (2) many of his contemporaries and predecessors, who would have claimed an interest in ‘biochemistry’ or ‘chemical physiology’ have eluded the historian’s attention. Among that large group one thinks of William Roberts (1830-1899) (3), Arthur Gamgee (1841—1909) (4), A. We describe a new Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT)-based intervention for those who repeatedly se... more We describe a new Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT)-based intervention for those who repeatedly self-harm. It is specifically designed to be deliverable by staff with no training in psychotherapy. The intervention is simply manualized into sequential tasks that are mediated by new CAT-style standardized tools. A particular feature of this intervention is the deliberate use of feelings elicited in the therapist (&#39;counter-transference&#39;) as (a) a guide to how professional poise is being threatened or lost and (b) an indicator of the appropriate focus for this very brief therapy. The psychiatrists&#39; reflection on their elicited feelings is mediated by a new CAT tool, the &#39;Assessor&#39;s Response File&#39; developed in this project. Audiotape analysis suggested that following a very brief learning period, trainee psychiatrists were able to adhere to the structure of the model and arrive at an appropriate reformulation in the first session but tended to be collusive in reciprocating the patients&#39; dysfunctional coping styles.
