Background Scleroma is a granuloma affecting mainly the nose, and may extend to affect the pharyn... more Background Scleroma is a granuloma affecting mainly the nose, and may extend to affect the pharynx, the larynx, the lacrimal apparatus, and many soft tissue structures surrounding the nose. In Egypt, as in many other Eastern countries, scleroma is the most common nasal granuloma diagnosed clinically and pathologically. Although it mainly affects the anterior part of the nose, it is not uncommon to find cases with extensive lesions that extend to occupy the entire nasal cavity, and also to the sinuses and the orbit. Active rhinoscleroma is usually treated medically, and surgical intervention is carried out in the fibrotic stage. Theory The aim of this study was to determine the role of CO 2 laser in the management of extensive active rhinoscleroma. The forest of Maamora is one who knows Moroccan forests regressive forest dynamics in Morocco. Lo... more The forest of Maamora is one who knows Moroccan forests regressive forest dynamics in Morocco. Located in the bioclimatic sub humid to semi-arid, it is the limit of the natural range of the cork oak. This location outside the distribu tion area of this species makes this particularly sensitive forest. Among the factors th at threaten to halt this fragile ecosystem, in addi tion to chronic drought and has become a structural phenomenon, overgrazing is also a limiti ng factor. This article provides a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the grazing pressure exerted in this ecosystem. However, this c hange can not be sustained because the dependence of production systems towards this forest area is very large and can not be sustained in the absence of the forest.

The effect of treatment of nasal and sinus diseases on the success rate of palatal surgery for obstructive sleep apnea Introduction

The Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology 2012, 28:196–200 Objective Many patients with obstructive ... more The Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology 2012, 28:196–200 Objective Many patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have coexisting nasal and sinus problems. In the absence of major anatomical abnormalities, these problems may be overlooked, hence jeopardizing the success rate of palatal surgery. Our objective was to identify the effect of medical management of nasal and sinus diseases on the success rate of palatal surgery in mild to moderate cases of OSA. Methodology This prospective study included 28 patients divided in two groups; group A was treated medically with antibiotics and local steroids before palatal surgeries, whereas group B was not treated medically before palatal surgeries. Assessment was made preoperatively and postoperatively using polysomnography. Results Group A showed more improvement in the apnea hypopnea index than group B. Conclusion Management of nasal and sinus problems improves the results of palatal surgery in cases of mild to moderate OSA.

Recebido em 8/3/09; aceito em 15/6/09; publicado na web em 25/11/09 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF VOLAT... more Recebido em 8/3/09; aceito em 15/6/09; publicado na web em 25/11/09 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF VOLATILE COMPONENTS OF Capsicodendron dinisii Schwancke (Canellaceae). The volatile components of the stem bark of Capsicodendron dinisii were obtained by hydrodistillation using a modified Clevenger-type apparatus. The chemical compounds were identified using the arithmetic index and confirmed by GC-MS. Twenty-three compounds suggest the identified representing almost 90% of the total oil composition. Limonene (68.5%) was the major compound found. The stereochemistry of limonene was determined and was found to be represented by (+)-limonene (94%) and (-)-limonene (6%). The presence of drimenol (0.7%), a drimane sesquiterpenoid, confirmed the volatile components characteristics of the Canellaceae family.
