Traditional knowledge is the backbone of the agricultural system of any country. These traditiona... more Traditional knowledge is the backbone of the agricultural system of any country. These traditional knowledge-based agricultural practices were phased out and replaced with modern agricultural practices. However, in the present scenario, these time tested traditional practices again have made a comeback due to their ability to sustain and overcome the obstacles posed by anthropogenic activities, land degradation, excessive and rampant usage of fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides, etc. In spite of this traditional knowledge has been confined to some secluded areas in particular among the indigenous, tribal, forest-dwelling communities. The present study has been aimed to document the Traditional knowledge-based agricultural practices in Tribal dominated District Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh. More than thirty agricultural practices have been documented during our study which has revealed the potential of this area which can be a model for natural, organic, sustainable farming, paving the way toward resilient agricultural systems.

Number of live lac insects (Kerria lacca) on the host plant till the harvest of lac crop, decides... more Number of live lac insects (Kerria lacca) on the host plant till the harvest of lac crop, decides the lac yield. Survival of K. lacca is therefore one of the most important factors for higher lac productivity. The present study on the survival of K. lacca on pigeon pea was carried with eight treatments which was replicated thrice. Apart from the basal dose of DAP and MoP, biofertilizers and humic acid were also applied as per the treatments for growing pigeon pea (TJT-501). Soil, foilar and soil + foliar applications were the three types of treatments applications. The mean number of live lac insects (MNL) was maximum 69.81 to 82.29 per 2.5 cm 2 at 30 days after Brood lac inoculation (BLI). It declined in linear trend till the harvest of lac crop. At 195 days after BLI the MNL varied BLI from 34.50 to 40.85 per 2.5cm 2. It was highest in the C. cajan with soil applications of VAM, DAP, MoP and FYM.

The Bio efficacy of insecticides for predator management of Kerria lacca was studied on the natur... more The Bio efficacy of insecticides for predator management of Kerria lacca was studied on the natural stand of Butea monosperma trees of 10 women lac growers of village Malhara Seoni district Madhya Pradesh during the July-October 2012. A combination of Cartap hydrochloride + Mancozeb(T 1),Emamectin benzoate + Dithane M-45(T 2) and Control(T 3) was evaluated against the predators of the Lac insect. Pesticides application significantly reduced the incidence of major predators-E amabilis and P pulverea. In comparison to T 3 there was a reduction in the population of E amabilis by 90 and 87 per cent respectively with (T 2) and (T 1). In case of P pulvera reduction in the population was 90 and 86.18 percent with T 1 and T 2 respectively over the control (T 3).

At 50 days after BLI, the mean population density of K laccaper varied from 44.95 to 50.28 in different treatments. There was significant difference in the mean population density of Lac insect in T3, T5 and T8 over T6. The former three were at par with each other. It was highest (50.28) in T3 Multiplex and lowest (44.95) in T6 Humic acid + Bolt acid + Bolt. Among the ten genotypes evaluated, Lakhnadon-2 performed better with highest lac production of 414 g per plant. This genotype also had highest percent of secondary branches with lac insect settlement the mean weight of 100 lac cells was also significantly highest (3.27 g), indicating that Lakhnadon-2, provides better phloem sap to the lac insects growing on it.

Guggul is gum oleoresin exudates from Commiphora wightii (Arnott.) Bhandari with immense medicinal properties. Guggulsterone (GS) is one of the main constituent of guggul. During the present study three samples of gum oleo-resin of C. wightii were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against L929 mouse skin fibroblast cell lines. In our study, the cytotoxic responses of guggul was determined by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol2yl)-2, 5-biphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT), neutral red uptake (NRU) assays and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assay. The initial analysis indicated that guggul samples tested has exhibited cytotoxicity. The outcome has opened a new window of possibility for the potential use of guggul against L929 cells.

Preference of lac insects depends on the quality and quantity of phloem sap from the its host Com... more Preference of lac insects depends on the quality and quantity of phloem sap from the its host Commercially, Keria lacca is reared on the naturally standing trees of Butea monosperma, Zizyphus mauritiana and Schleicheria oleosa. In the recent field trial, Rangeeni brood lac was inoculated on annual leguminous shrub Cajanus cajan (L) Millsp grown on different substrate. Though the mean number of primary branches per plant varied from 2.17 T2, (C. cajan grown on S2 with lac insects and picking of mature pods), T6, (C. cajan grown on S1 with lac insects and only one hand picking of mature pods followed by removal of flowers) to 2.67, T4, (C. cajan grown on S3 with lac insects and hand picking of pods). However, the mean number of secondary branches per plant varied from 6.17 (T2) to 8.17 T5, (C. cajan grown on S1 with lac insects and removal of young pods). Lac insect settled of primary branches per plant was highest (94.44%) on C. cajan grown on substrate S1 with removal of young pods (T5). But the mean percent of lac insects settled secondary branches per plant was highest in both T6 (85.95%) and T3, (C. cajan grown on S1 with lac insects and removal of flowers) (85.30%). Removal of sink enriches the nutrient status of phloem sap. Thus the data reveals that lac insect settlement or preference depends on the nutrient availability in the phloem sap of the host plant.

A two-year field trial on lac production on Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. was conducted on the resea... more A two-year field trial on lac production on Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. was conducted on the research field of Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh of India following randomized block design during 2019-20 and 2020-21. After harvest of C. cajan seeds and lac as cash crops, the left-over wood of C. cajan was evaluated for fuelwood (as an energy stove) for the small and marginal farm households. The mean dry weight of total fuelwood (including shoot+root) varied from 1196.67 to 1393.67 g plant-1 in pooled data. The estimated mean weight of total fuelwood (root+shoot) of C. cajan varied from 1447.98 to 1686.34 kg ha-1 in pooled mean of both the years. The value of total (shoot+root) dry fuelwood per plant varied from Rs. 7,239.85 to Rs. 8,431.70 in pooled mean of both the years. This total fuelwood can fulfill daily household requirement of fuelwood upto 3 years (891 to 1037 days) @ 4.06 kg day-1 household-1.

Moisture deficit created by drought or withholding irrigation results in a significant reduction in plant water potential, osmotic potential, relative water content, photosynthetic rate, respiration, etc. Moreover, a marked reduction in various growth characters like, leaf area, weight or yield has been reported under abiotic and biotic stresses incidence of insect-pest and diseases. The application of potassium in general, mitigates the adverse effect of such stresses, which facilitate the conditions, that favours more or higher growth and yield levels of crop.
