GHG emission savings are calculated inadequately for two reasons in the case of energy utilization of biogas produced from crop residues. First is that the allocation of emissions to biogas and digestate is not precisely defined. The second one is the rule not to account for GHG emissions before the collection of crop residues. The objective of this study was to determine values of GHG emission savings of electricity generated from biogas produced from corn stover. Determination was done by strictly applying the method defined by the directive and its associated rules and defining cases where identified shortcomings of the method are overcome. Shortcomings are overcome by system boundary expansion and incorporation of associated GHG emissions for new material flows. GHG emission savings for all defined cases were lower than 70% which is a minimum value for sustainability in terms of GHG emissions savings. Since all results of GHG emission savings for analyzed cases were under the limit of 70%, it is concluded that by expanding the system boundaries of analysis, GHG emissions are realistically calculated, but the decision about sustainability in terms of GHG emission savings is not changed.
