Bone marrow aspiration and trephine (BMAT) biopsies remain important tests in haematology. Howeve... more Bone marrow aspiration and trephine (BMAT) biopsies remain important tests in haematology. However, the procedures can be moderately to severely painful despite standard methods of pain relief. To test the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in alleviating the pain from BMAT in addition to standard analgesia using a numerical pain rating scale (NRS). 70 patients requiring BMAT were randomised (1:1) in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. -35 patients received TENS impulses at a strong but comfortable amplitude (intervention group) and 35 patients received TENS impulses just above the sensory threshold (control group) (median pulse amplitude 20 and 7 mA, respectively). Patients and operators were blinded to group allocation. Pain assessments were made using a numerical pain scale completed after the procedure. A novel photonic integrated circuit is proposed that, using an RF source, generates at its output... more A novel photonic integrated circuit is proposed that, using an RF source, generates at its output ports the same magnitude but opposite sign high order single optical side bands of a suppressed optical carrier. A single stage parallel Mach-Zehnder Modulator (MZM) and a two-stage series parallel MZM architecture are described and their relative merits discussed. A transfer matrix method is used to describe the operation of the circuits. The theoretical analysis is validated by computer simulation. As an illustration of a prospective application, it is shown how the circuit may be used as a key element of an optical transmission system to transport radio signals over fibre for wireless access; generating remotely a mm-wave carrier modulated by digital IQ data. A detailed calculation of symbol error rate is presented to characterise the system performance. The circuit may be fabricated in any integration platform offering a suitable phase modulator circuit element such as LiNbO3, Silicon, and III-V or hybrid technology.

A generalized array of N parallel phase modulators electrically driven with a progressive N 2 / π... more A generalized array of N parallel phase modulators electrically driven with a progressive N 2 / π phase shift is analyzed. For N-even, the equivalence of this configuration to parallel Mach-Zehnder architectures, and specifically the equivalence for N¼ 4 to a dual parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator is shown. A simple approach to the design of this architecture that determines the static optical phase shifts required in each of the N parallel arms to suppress unwanted harmonics while maximizing the harmonics of interest is developed. The proposed design approach is validated by numerical simulations of N¼ 4 and N ¼6 architectures with properly determined optical phase shifts. Optical single-side-band modulation (lower and upper) and frequency multiplication of an electrical drive signal with high suppression of unwanted harmonics is shown to be achievable.

A novel electro-optical up-conversion mixer architecture comprising four electro-optical phase mo... more A novel electro-optical up-conversion mixer architecture comprising four electro-optical phase modulators situated in the arms between an interconnected 1 × 4 distribution tree and a complementary 4 × 2 combination tree is proposed. The distribution and combination trees are based on multi-mode interference couplers (MMI). The novelty lies in the use of the intrinsic phase relations between the MMI ports to realize a broadband and free of drift design requiring no static phase shift elements. A transfer-matrix approach is followed to represent the main building blocks in the proposed design, and hence to describe the operation of the entire optical up-conversion mixer. The concept is demonstrated by computer simulations. A single side-band modulation with carrier suppression is obtained at the output of the proposed architecture, which is in agreement with the analytical development. Scenarios considering both ideal and imperfect power balances and phase relations in the MMIs, as well as imperfect phase relations of the electrical drives to the phase modulators are analyzed.

A dual-function photonic integrated circuit for microwave photonic applications is proposed. The ... more A dual-function photonic integrated circuit for microwave photonic applications is proposed. The circuit consists of four linear electro-optic phase modulators connected optically in parallel within a generalized Mach-Zehnder interferometer architecture. The photonic circuit is arranged to have two separate output ports. A first port provides frequency up-conversion of a microwave signal from the electrical to the optical domain; equivalently singleside-band modulation. A second port provides tunable millimeter wave carriers by frequency octo-tupling of an appropriate amplitude RF carrier. The circuit exploits the intrinsic relative phases between the ports of multi-mode interference couplers to provide substantially all the static optical phases needed. The operation of the proposed dual-function photonic integrated circuit is verified by computer simulations. The performance of the frequency octo-tupling and up-conversion functions is analyzed in terms of the electrical signal to harmonic distortion ratio and the optical single side band to unwanted harmonics ratio, respectively.

The front- and back-end of the circuit comprises 4×4 MMI couplers enclosing an array of four pairs of phase modulators and 2×2 MMI couplers. The proposed design for frequency multiplication requires no optical or electrical filters, the operation is not limited to carefully adjusted modulation indexes, and the drift originated from static DC bias is mitigated by making use of the intrinsic phase relations of multi-mode interference couplers. A transfer matrix approach is used to represent the main building blocks of the design and hence to describe the operation of the frequency 8-tupling and 24-tupling. The concept is theoretically developed and demonstrated by simulations. Ideal and imperfect power imbalances in the multi-mode interference couplers, as well as ideal and imperfect phases of the electric drives to the phase modulators, are analyzed.

The increased availability of sequence data for various eukaryotic organisms in recent years has necessitated for better tools and techniques for the prediction and analysis of promoters in eukaryotic sequences. Many promoter prediction methods and tools have been developed to date but they have yet to provide acceptable predictive performance. One obvious criteria to improve on current methods is to devise a better system for selecting appropriate features of promoters that distinguish them from non-promoters. Secondly improved performance can be achieved by enhancing the predictive ability of the machine learning algorithms used.

Primary data were collected through household survey using PRA tools such as Focus Group Discussion and Crosscheck Interviews with key informants. Livelihood condition of the Nijhum Dwip fishermen community was presented in terms of family size and type, occupational status, educational status, housing condition, drinking water facilities, sanitary facilities, credit facilities and annual income. The average homestead area of the fishers was 8.75 decimal. Among the fishers', 66.66% were illiterate while 16.66% had primary education and another 16.66% can sign only. The present study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of some selected heterotrophic bac... more The present study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of some selected heterotrophic bacteria in one of the sewage lagoons and in the river Buriganga, which receives the sewage effluents from the sewage lagoons, with a view to evaluate the effect of sewage treatment. The heterotrophic plate count (HPC) ranged from 1.1 x 10 8 to 3.0 x 10 9 cfu/ml in sewage lagoon from January to December 2005. The HPC values ranged from 1.1 x 10 5 to 3.0 x 10 9 cfu/ml in the outfall of the sewage effluents and other sampling locations in the river Buriganga. The total and faecal coliform counts of the sewage lagoon and the discharge point in the river were always very high as >2.4 x 10 3 cfu/100 ml in all seasons as measured by the MPN method. Salmonellae were isolated occasionally, while vibrios were frequently isolated from all the sampling points from throughout the year. The MPN values of nitrifying bacteria were also estimated to compare with HPC values. Ammonium oxidizers ranged from 1.1 x 10 2 to 1.1 x 10 3 /ml in the sewage lagoon and 2.0 x 10 1 to 2.2 x 10 3 /ml in the river water. Nitrite oxidizers showed very low MPN values. This study suggests that the water of the river Buriganga was heavily polluted. It also suggests that the oxidation or self-purification system in the oxidation lagoons and subsequent treatment of the effluents were far from satisfactory level. Even the discharged sewage in the river Buriganga remains equally contaminated, which had been demonstrated by the presence of large number of pathogenic organisms. This poses health hazards to the users of the water from the river and also poses risks for the aquatic organisms of this water body.

One obvious criteria to improve on current methods is to devise a better system for selecting appropriate features of promoters that distinguish them from non-promoters. Secondly improved performance can be achieved by enhancing the predictive ability of the machine learning algorithms used.

The system architecture and the design of hardware and software are introduced in details. The designed system realizes the functions of realtime data acquisition, wireless transmission and communication between the smart meter and the central computer with the help of standard ZigBee modules.

Primary data were collected through household survey using PRA tools such as Focus Group Discussion and Crosscheck Interviews with key informants. Livelihood condition of the Nijhum Dwip fishermen community was presented in terms of family size and type, occupational status, educational status, housing condition, drinking water facilities, sanitary facilities, credit facilities and annual income. The average homestead area of the fishers was 8.75 decimal. Among the fishers', 66.66% were illiterate while 16.66% had primary education and another 16.66% can sign only. The present study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of some selected heterotrophic bac... more The present study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of some selected heterotrophic bacteria in one of the sewage lagoons and in the river Buriganga, which receives the sewage effluents from the sewage lagoons, with a view to evaluate the effect of sewage treatment. The heterotrophic plate count (HPC) ranged from 1.1 x 10 8 to 3.0 x 10 9 cfu/ml in sewage lagoon from January to December 2005. The HPC values ranged from 1.1 x 10 5 to 3.0 x 10 9 cfu/ml in the outfall of the sewage effluents and other sampling locations in the river Buriganga. The total and faecal coliform counts of the sewage lagoon and the discharge point in the river were always very high as >2.4 x 10 3 cfu/100 ml in all seasons as measured by the MPN method. Salmonellae were isolated occasionally, while vibrios were frequently isolated from all the sampling points from throughout the year. The MPN values of nitrifying bacteria were also estimated to compare with HPC values. Ammonium oxidizers ranged from 1.1 x 10 2 to 1.1 x 10 3 /ml in the sewage lagoon and 2.0 x 10 1 to 2.2 x 10 3 /ml in the river water. Nitrite oxidizers showed very low MPN values. This study suggests that the water of the river Buriganga was heavily polluted. It also suggests that the oxidation or self-purification system in the oxidation lagoons and subsequent treatment of the effluents were far from satisfactory level. Even the discharged sewage in the river Buriganga remains equally contaminated, which had been demonstrated by the presence of large number of pathogenic organisms. This poses health hazards to the users of the water from the river and also poses risks for the aquatic organisms of this water body.
