The shift to remote-only education, in particular, forced the recognition of compounded problems faced by poor and economically disadvantaged families with school-age children. Millions of children, particularly students of color, faced diminished and imperiled progress because of limited or no access to the Internet at home. This exploration concentrates particularly on residents of rural and tribal communities, where insufficient efforts have been made to increase technological advances and access levels to reflect current standards. This article focuses on digital inclusivity in rural and tribal areas of two Great Plains states through a wide-ranging survey and analysis of the challenges and successes of technological leadership, information literacy and public policy development and administration. Introduction Methodology Historical framework Geographic factors Broadband comparison Educational systems Access and technology literacy LIS institutions Governmental policy and action Indigenous Nations attempting to close the divide Media coverage/Information dissemination about programs Conclusion U.S.

Among the many discussions and topics that took hold as a result of Hilary Clinton's campaign for US president was that of the glass ceiling. The reemergence of the discussion of racial and gender barriers in politics and professional life in America provides an opportunity to revisit the history of racial barriers in the library profession, particularly in library education. This essay provides a framework for understanding the racial and social dynamics that led to the development of a separate but unequal system for educating African American librarians in America. And, of equal or perhaps greater significance at this stage in our profession's evolution, it highlights the significant contributions of African American leaders in library education who also overcame tremendous obstacles and systemic barriers, and ultimately changed the profession regarding who it invites in, and who and how it seeks to serve.

An area lacking within MIR relates to the retrieval of images and illustrations that often accompany printed music. Addressing that deficiency, this paper will briefly discuss historical American sheet music and report results from research indicating whether researchers can retrieve sheet music imagery from digital music collections, using basic Internet search engines. The findings are expected to advance our understanding of the complexities of retrieving digital music collections and music–related iconography.

In today's global environment, library administrators must make complex decisions to help institutions achieve their identified mission, vision, and goals. Keeping the bigger picture in mind can be challenging amid all the detailed demands of running a library. This column, then, offers breathing room-space to reflect on a lesson learned, to articulate an insight, to grapple with a question, to clarify a perspective, or to recognize a trend. The ideas expressed here will, I hope, inspire and spark dialogue. Have a topic in mind for a future column? Contact me at

The turbulent sociopolitical ecosystem, exemplified by the Black Lives Matter movement, the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2020 US presidential election, has dominated recent print and electronic media and highlighted the malleable nature of information. Ubiquitous social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, and others have become the vehicles through which consumers of political information are gaining a practical understanding of the inseparable nature of politics and information. As a major provider and facilitator of access to information, libraries have been drawn into the ideological confrontation between the traditional concepts of information, truth, and access. This article presents an interdisciplinary mapping of the intersections of politics and information and establishes a foundation for understanding ways in which that convergence affects the roles, engagement, and responsibilities of libraries.
