Prepared floors were intentionally fashioned by repeatedly laying down layers of yellowish local marine sediment of variable thickness, while the thin dark horizons included between them represent residues of activities carried out on the floors, e.g. of processing of cereals and occasional animal parking. The first analysed installation turned out to be the result of the superimposition of two successive combustion features of the same type, while the second one was probably associated with cereal processing.

In a certain cases linguistic analysis of toponyms assisted in concluding in favor of its naming relationship with the peculiarities of local vegetations. We presents an attempt of possible explanations of toponyms, based on landscape-climatic peculiarities and overall bio-environment conditions. Elucidation of all specificity of local environmental conditions might serve as substantiation for explaining the old toponyms, as in the case considered here of Nigvziani and Nigozeti. Flora evidently have a priority from many aspects and determine the mode of life of those societies who inhabited the territory where the peculiar ligneous species are distributed. In the presented case, we discuss the walnut (in Georgian "Nigozi") which is the widely distrib...

The authors use remote sensing, surface collection and magnetometry to investigate two hilltop fortress settlements at the margins of the Kura River Basin, with a particular emphasis on satellite settlements around the main hills. The results support a model of settlement growth in which previously mobile groups settled around the fortress, while maintaining a degree of spatial and social separation. The use of multiple survey techniques reveals a complex picture of settlement organisation, with implications for comparative analysis of prehistoric population aggregation models.

The paper presents the results of the first two field seasons (2009 and 2010) of the project. The main activities were the study of the unpublished material from the important EBA settlement and cemetery of Natsargora in the Khashuri district in the western part of the province, the excavation of two kurgans at Okherakhevi at its eastern border, between the Kaspi and Mtskheta districts, and a remote-sensing-assisted geo-morphological and archaeological survey of the province. A program of sampling for archaeometric analyses and radiometric dating of different Early Bronze Age sites of the region was also launched.

This paper uses remote sensing, surface collection, and magnetometry to explore two hilltop fortress-settlements at the margins of the Kura River Basin, with a particular emphasis on extra-mural settlement off the main hill. The results support a model of settlement growth in which previously-mobile groups settled around the fortress, while maintaining some spatial separation. Multi-technique survey provided a nuanced picture of settlement organization with implications for comparative analysis of population aggregation models.
