Nel 200° anniversario della Berio come biblioteca civica è stata pubblicata la sua storia dalle o... more Nel 200° anniversario della Berio come biblioteca civica è stata pubblicata la sua storia dalle origini alla seconda guerra mondiale rimasta inedita per quasi cinquant’anni. Ne è autore Luigi Marchini, esperto bibliofilo, curatore del patrimonio librario antico e poi conservatore onorario della Biblioteca Berio. In questo articolo si ricordano il suo forte legame con la Berio e la sua importanza per la rinascita della biblioteca dopo i gravissimi danni subiti durante il conflitto. Grazie alla sua competenza furono ricostituiti e riorganizzati i fondi librari antichi e furono realizzate le prime mostre ad essi dedicate. Oltre a collaborare con la rivista “La Berio”, Marchini pubblicò presso Olschki il catalogo degli incunaboli della biblioteca.
On the 200th anniversary of the Berio as a civic library its history from its origins to the Second World War has been published after fifty years. The author is Luigi Marchini, an expert bibliophile, curator of the ancient book collections, and later honorary conservator of the Berio Library. This article recalls his connection with the Berio and his crucial role in the library’s renaissance after the severe damage it suffered during the Second World War. Thanks to his expertise, the ancient book collections of the Berio Library were reconstituted and reorganized, and the first exhibitions dedicated to them were realized. In addition to collaborating with the magazine "La Berio", Marchini also published the catalog of incunabula of the library.

The Canevari Collection of the Berio Library in Genoa has about 2,400 works dating from the 1400s... more The Canevari Collection of the Berio Library in Genoa has about 2,400 works dating from the 1400s to the death of its first owner, the Genoese Demetrio Canevari (Genoa 1559 - Rome 1625), in 1625. The library of Demetrio Canevari was left to us thanks to his will which stipulates how his heirs are to maintain it and who or what institutions could claim ownership of it. The Canevari Collection is a scientific library that contains important medical texts such as the treatises on anatomy by Vesalio and Fabrizi d'Acquapendente or the ancient editions of Galeno and Avicenna. There are also numerous works in the fields of chemistry, botany, zoology and philosophy. The library is a testament of a critical period in the evolution of scientific thought. The catalogue of the Canevari Collection was published by Rodolfo Savelli in 1974. The manuscript catalogue of the library, written by Canevari himself is kept within the Opera Pia "Sussidio Canevari Demetrio" which was founded by Canevari to benefit his descendants.

Sciences en M\ue8diterran\ue9e\u201d co-financed by UE (Interreg IIIB Medocc programm); this project involved 14 partners from 8 different European and non-European countries. Exposition (inserted also in the Festival of Science 2007) follows step by step the \u201cgeological discovery of Ligurian Region\u201d through personages that have had important influence in this topic field (Arturo Issel, Clarence Bicknell, Lorenzo Pareto, Gaetano Rovereto) and shows the work field of the geologist thanks to historical maps, scientific instruments and \u201cfield books\u201d(as Lorenzo Pareto and Clarence Bicknell books), from the University of Genoa. Geological structure of the Ligurian Region is the guide-thread in a travel between areas in which the close interaction of geological characteristics and human occupancy/activity have had a strong influence on both the landscape and the cultural/economic hostory since prehistoric times. Books, documents and objects (ex. rocks, minerals, fossils, prehistorically and archeological artifacts) from civic and university Libraries and Museums create an exposition path, that, although very close to the Earth Sciences, proposes a first experiment of presentation of the ligurian geodiversity in a interdisciplinary point of view

The paper discusses the results of a survey focusing on a number of books of the Berio Library, d... more The paper discusses the results of a survey focusing on a number of books of the Berio Library, dealing with antiques, and dating back to a period from the 16th to the 18th century. The paper explores the most important book collections of that library: Berio, Canevari and Brignole Sale. Discussion is provided about the historical development of antiquarian disciplines such as numismatics, epigraphy, topographical-antiquarian descriptions; ancient traditions; and ancient Italic peoples, such as pre-Roman and Etruscan. Following the evolution from antiquarian studies to archaeological research, emphasis is placed on the increasing attention to non-literary sources. The examination of books and the provenance research have been undertaken by using archival sources. They have highlighted variety and quality of the so far little-known book heritage of the Berio Library concerning the ancient world, that can be further analyzed in order to better know the cultural profile of personalities involved in building the books collections.

The Bio-Bibliographical Dictionary of Italian Librarians of the 20th Century (2022) includes the ... more The Bio-Bibliographical Dictionary of Italian Librarians of the 20th Century (2022) includes the biographies of three librarians of the Berio Civic Library. Undelio Levrero (Genoa 1882-1964), who joined the library in 1905, directed it from 1941 to 1945 during the Second World War, during which the library suffered severe damage. Luigi Marchini (Genoa 1899-1985) was in charge of the cataloguing and preservation of Berio's manuscripts and old books from 1954 to 1964, reorganising the antiquarian section after the war damage. Rossella Piatti (Naples 1927-Genoa 2017) collaborated in the reorganisation of the library after the Second World War, becoming head of the antiquarian section and then in 1979 director of the Berio and other civic libraries.

The essay reconstructs the history of the Berio Library, the most important civic library in Geno... more The essay reconstructs the history of the Berio Library, the most important civic library in Genoa, from its reopening to the public after the severe damage suffered in November 1942 during World War II to its relocation to another site specifically renovated in the former Archbishop's Seminary. Relying largely on archival documents, it focuses particularly on the inadequacy of the previous location and then on the long and complex events that accompanied the renovation of the former Archbishop's Seminary, while also showcasing the development of a network of libraries in the city's neighborhoods and the birth of the Genoese urban library system.

On the 200th anniversary of the Berio as a civic library its history from its origins to the Second World War has been published after fifty years. The author is Luigi Marchini, an expert bibliophile, curator of the ancient book collections, and later honorary conservator of the Berio Library. This article recalls his connection with the Berio and his crucial role in the library’s renaissance after the severe damage it suffered during the Second World War. Thanks to his expertise, the ancient book collections of the Berio Library were reconstituted and reorganized, and the first exhibitions dedicated to them were realized. In addition to collaborating with the magazine "La Berio", Marchini also published the catalog of incunabula of the library.
